An interesting thread, about which I know very little ...but I was wondering if anyone else has seen the show "Crossing over with John Edward" on Sci-Fi channel? I always been sceptical of psychic's, mediums and the like. Much of what they say can be applied to a wide range of possibilities, but this guy seems different. Either the audience consists of some very skilled actors, or they screen the audience incredibly well and he works with that information (they claim he has absolutely no prrior knowledge), or he is the best, most convincing faker I have ever seen, OR he is legit and really can communicate wih the dead. Interesting topic - informative for orb amateur remixers. Miles away from the Orb, I know, but does the book have any explanation for two strange unconscious perceptual phenomena that are always happening to me? 1) The awareness that one has that someone is watching them. Stare at someone for a while and they will start to look around until they find who is watching them. 2) The ability (perhaps coincidence) to think of someone, then the next moment they telephone you. While this thread is not directly Orb-related, it is extremely interesting and very much in the vein of what the Orb is all about (IMHO). Apologies to the purists out there. Regardless of how much of a skeptic you are, there is much about human awareness, consciousness and perception that we don't understand and can't explain. Homing pigeons use their ability to sense the earth's magnetic force to find their way. I assert that we are quite capable of perceiving this force. Why 'can't' we? Well, I am not going to try to explain this, although my guess would be based in evolutionary theory that the need to do so wasn't there after some point in human civilization. One could also draw from religion, many religions have stories about a time when people lived with a deeper awareness of (God, nature, whatever), and then some bad shit went down, etc., and we lost this ability. The 'force' of a stare could also, in theory, be percievable. Another aspect of human awareness can be explained by telling a short story. A good friend of mine was rendered almost completely blind in his late 20's. As a result, his other senses increased their respective abilities. It seems clear to me that his hands, ears, etc. were CAPABLE of this heightened level of awareness before his blindness. There was just no need. But why can't that increased awareness be attained without being accompanied by the permanant loss of another sense? I think it can, again, theoretically. I've only > given it a couple of listens, but to honest I'm not that keen on the new tracks. > I'd be interested in anyone else's opinion. don't forget that 'f(r)eely wheely' was dropped on v2, and replaced with 'jam on yer honey', fairly soon after v1 appeared... ...the 11-track, and now the 14-track reworkings both appeared after Andy Hughes left earlier this year. as well as the two tracks mentioned above, 'ralf' and 'yungle' have been dropped from the most recent versions. i think the album re-jig was for two reasons - this is all IMHO, by the way: 1. to make it 'fresher' - at least two of 'freely wheely', 'jam on yer honey' and 'bicycles and tricycles' were planned to be b-sides to possible singles, for instance, and not really album-strength material. 2. to make it more Alex's album, after Andy left - 'yungle' (my favourite track, btw) was definately more of an 'Andy' track, rather than an 'Alex' track. again - this is _purely_ my own interpretation. i haven't spoken to andy for over six months, and nobody at island or the band's management has said anything to me either. i would agree that some of the new tracks ('egnable', 'firestar', '1,1,1') do seem to just be there as 'filler'. the 'egnable' track, which is fil speaking, has been used in live stuff before (but it IS still pretty funny though, and very 'orb')... ...i wasn't too keen on the two new vocal tracks on first listen either. however, 'centuries' (aki vocals) and 'plum island' (nina walsh) have both grown on me with repeated plays - especially 'plum island', which i really like. i also really like the full-length 'hamlet of kings'. for some reason, i think that 'edm' is a piss-take...'Electronic Dance Music' maybe??? again, i have no evidence to back this up and it's just fevered conjecture from what i laughingly refer to as my 'mind'. ;-) whatever, i still quite like it anyway. 'thursday's keeper' is a good track too - a blend of reggae, drum and bass, and techno influences. it did take me a LONG time to get used to the 14-track version of 'cydonia'. i thought that v1 was a GREAT album, and was very used to it. however, it was two years ago now... ...i do think that maybe there's been a little too much messing around with the final version, but that: i. it's still a bloody good album ii. overall, that the 'messing about' has been positive - five full new tracks can't be sniffed at, and none of them are dogs. however, i'm still a little sad that 'yungle' won't see a commercial release now, as it's a fantastic track. > Also, is it me or have the "old" tracks been tweaked for the latest release? yep - 'once more', 'a mile long lump of lard' and 'terminus' have all been 'tweaked'. i think that the previous version of 'once more' is a better/tighter single mix than the new album version, but i do like the new versions of the latter two tracks. interestingly, the 'once more radio edit' on the new promo cd seems more like the older version than the newer one to me, but maybe i'm imagining it (or the edit has taken out the bits that i thought detracted from the new album version). my head hurts. as far as i can tell, 'promis', 'ghost dancing' and 'turn it down' are the same, but i might be wrong. > Last question for now - What do Jam on yer honey & Bicycles > and Tricycles sound like? 'jam on yer honey'??? a pretty uptempo bass and synth track, that worked as a good lead-in to the even more uptempo 'yungle', and a better track than 'f(r)eely wheely' i thought. 'bicycles & tricycles'??? from what i can remember of it, it was probably the best of the three tracks under consideration for b-sides. i don't think it appeared on v1 or v2, mainly due to the fact that it was over 10 minutes long at the 'first edits' stage and there just wasn't the room. quite a slow-burner, with a 'towers of dub'(ish) bass line through most of it... ...maybe it'll make a reappearance at some point, but nothing that i'm aware of at present. cheers, - --- Smiley # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 01 Dec 2000 18:32:03 -0700 From: Dave Kiernan Subject: Re: (orb) I'm back from the Englewood CO LX/Juno gig... I wonder why it's not considered more consistent to believe that while many *many* claims of the psychic/paranormal variety are misperceptions or just plain crap, there are more than enough persistently unexplained or verifiable cases to merit at least serious attention. A good example of a scientist who follows this line of reasoning is UFO researcher Jacques Vallee, and I direct interested readers to his book /Revelation/, where he brilliantly manages to both debunk UFO mythology while confirming that a very real phenomenon exists. Likewise, the admirable stunts of Doug & Dave and their ilk do not account for the daily appearance of agroglyphs ("crop circles") on every continent. >James "The Amazing" Randi (a professional magician who is >in the same camp as Penn & Teller) spends a great deal of his >time debunking these myths. I recommend checking out the humble Javanese acupuncturist John Chang, documented in the "Ring of Fire" PBS series and more recently in the book "The Magus of Java." >(Geller, if you don't already know, is the guy who supposedly >bends spoons just by thinking about it. It is my understanding that he has done much wilder stuff than bending spoons, more akin to what that Blaine fellow is doing now. I, myself, favor the amazing "Kreskin," as seen on "Live With Regis & Kathie Lee." =) >There are many unexplained things that still exist in the >world today--for example, how Christina Agorilla (or whatever >the hell her name is) can outsell the Orb--yet none of this >is due to paranormal phenomona. Au contraire! It *must* be voodoo mind control demon possession ... there's no other explanation. =) Anyway, I'll get off my soapbox now. It's just that I've been researching this stuff independently for almost 15 years and I find the "100% crap" conclusion to be -- if you will -- wild and implausible. I'll settle for 95%. Besides, things more bizarre than these happen all the time without raising hackles (e.g. hypnosis) -- and, if people can do them, they aren't paranormal any more, are they? I doubt this will help, but when I was at Uni and encoding from a Mac, I just slaved the school's Unix system to do it, and I think I used Lame encoder with a Unix build. Hehe. 1.) place lame encoder, etc in student executable (.bin) directory) 2.) place .aiff's (.wav's, etc) into Unix temp space. 3.) output to Unix temp space. 4.) download .mp3's to the mac. of course, I don't think the school would recommend that. hehe. otherwise, just go to mp3.com and click on software-> encoders-> mac they should have all you need. - -b # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 03 Dec 2000 23:39:51 +0000 From: djblue@graffiti.net Subject: (orb) (OT) freedrive? A man who knows what he's talking about. Likewise I think Yungle was/is the best track on Cydonia v1.0. I can see why it was pulled i.e. to get rid of Andy's [Falconer?] dabs on the album. It's a shame. Perhaps it could come out as a 12" [promo only] as it's more suited to that than being stuck on the last 3rd of an LP. It's obviously a homage to early 90's Drum and Bass [Jungle, geddit?] but it works for me..... At least Turn it down is still on there. They 'ad a Beeeer allowance. True, Egnable is pure early 90's orb but I can't help the feeling that it's a little staged rather than sampled. Lump of lard is actually better and a little clearer IMO. It took a while for Cydonia to grow on me, but when it did it was there. Not that it matters in the least, but I'm sure Once More is top 5 material when it actually gets released. I hope that it's the album version which gets airplay, as I've heard some of the remixes and have the "steamroller mix" on acetate [which is utter comercial shite IMO]. No too sure about Centuries, the backing track doesn't seem to have any sort of substance to it. Plum Island, Hamlet of Kings and 1,1,1 also seem to be lacking something, and like you say I just smell filler. I think it will grow like the last one, but I'm not convinced yet. Ironically EDM seems to have some balls and is more of an "instant" track. Thursday's keeper is a almost a mini Yungle with some electronic tweakery thrown in, but falls short of the mark. You obviously know someone @ Island. How do they feel about people uploading their [in most cases unfinished] tracks onto the Internet? Are they going to pull a Metallica with Napster? To me I can't see a problem as I know I'm going to buy the LP and all the singles [in multiple formats] like I always do. If someone can download half the tracks off the LP from the Internet and then make up their mind one way or the other, then surely that is a good thing? I think Island and WAU! have had their money's worth from me in the past. I mean, there can't be many copies of the V3 [4?] doing the rounds, but look how excited and fired up it's getting people. That's what promo's are far IMO. enough for now...
