Thank you all for your kind suggestions, but I feel that that sort of thing needs to be pointed out. In all the years I was with the band I was with (which I'm sure you've heard of), we got that sort of thing all the time, and not *once* did any fan think about what we as a business organization were trying to accomplish. I don't feel it was uncalled for, and if it were unfriendly I wouldn't have said it. Of course, if I'm to go somewhere else maybe I'll take the stuff on the OAA that I provided with me, and maybe I'll forget about providing the audio from the new radio link (which I already have as audio files, burned into CD's, Mp3ized, and separated) on the OAA as well. If you really want me to go home I have the right to take my cookies with me as well. <-- this is black humour and you're supposed to realise that but of course I've worded it in such a way, quite intentionally, so that you can't tell. Great stuff, with video as well!! The synchronicity of it all was but very spooky for me, just two weeks ago I purchased the CD that starts the file. Ex bonzo dog - Vivian Stanshalls - Sir Henry at Ndidis Kraal and last week was mixing one of these same soundbites into an orb track myself: "We of the geographic society think that you are the man. What drugs!! I always thought their articles were a bit too inspired"! Then he heads to Africa. Anyone with an appreciation for British surrealist humor, an audio story about bodily parts, British landed gentry, Edgar Alan Poe, farting, Robert Louis Stevenson, old world war two movies, etc, etc, with the odd musical interlude, will love Vivian Stanshalls - SIR HENRY AT RAWLINSON END (the previous album). It is a true masterpiece, from a man (now deceased) that sadely spend most of his life in mental institutions. (Ndidis Krall is perhaps a bit racist but has some good bits). Anyway, the Orb - viva the variety. I quit mostly because I hate the fans (a bunch beat me up in Japan because they wanted to see what I look like without the mask -- and they were mad to discover I still had stage makeup on once they nearly broke my neck ripping the mask off of me). I *really* hate fans that say "I wanna join yer band", jokingly or not. And on top of that I hate fans that make stuff up about you because that's the way *they* want you to be (which is 99.44% of them). Residents did a whole album ("Freak Show") about it and after it was made I listened back to it and the idea of that album -- "which ones are the freaks? The ones on the stage or the ones watching what's going on on the stage" -- got way too creepy for me. So I said fuck being a pop musician, sold all my equipment away to those horrible fans after destroying it, and went happily to work as a project coordinator in a friend's recording studio. And I hardly ever talk about the Residents, except when people find out, I usually say "that was a long time ago" or "yeh but don't tell anyone else, else they might want a Resident too." Being a pop musician is horrible, the most awful thing in the world. It is the exact opposite of what you think it is. I thought it would be fun, but it makes you *old* quickly. I don't know how others do it. Now I make orchestral music and draw it on paper when I make music, and it sounds nothing like the Residents, as it should be, and I don't think I'll ever make another note of anything approaching pop music again. The reason that I'm on this list is that the Orb are the one band that I've heard since quitting the Rz that consistently make music so interesting that I want to hear it over and over again, and I like hearing them in the live setting so I watch and collect live tapes. I only hope Alex gets a charge out of it because if I myself had to deal with anything I've heard about his problems since Island was sold, I would have hung it up, and I wouldn't have been surprised or upset had he done so. My attitude is summed up by this story about that drummer guy for Rush: My other half's brother is a major Rush fan, and idolises the drummer, whatever his name is (gawd I don't listen to them). He wrote this gushing fan letter to the drummer and the drummer did something that made me smile - -- he wrote back and told him to get a life. Naturally my other half's brother didn't get it, and still doesn't. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Jan 2001 08:36:03 -0600 From: Orbster Subject: Re: (orb) RE: Badorb proposition or don't be an idiot I can't help it; I have to say this. First, I can understand your disliking fans because they beat you up. But you shouldn't generalize and intimate that all fans are bad because a subset of them attacked you. This is a very typical flaw in logical thinking. Second, why is it that you would hate people for asking to join your band? Is it possible that they might think they have something to offer it? Perhaps they were suggesting that it sucked, and they could make it better. Perhaps not. Regardless, that's NO reason to HATE them. Third, fans tend to have fantastical ideas about the members of their favorite bands. Does this mean they are evil? Does it mean you can be nasty to them? I don't think so. These are the very people who support you and pay your bills; to *hate* them is a bit contradictory. (Note, too, that you say you "sold all my equipment away to those horrible fans after destroying it". How noble. They pay money to buy broken equipment because you're upset?) If it takes a retrospective analysis of the title of your album to make you aware of the fanatic nature of your fans, then weren't you a little bit blind to it all? Because you had a bad experience does not mean that everyone else in the same position has bad experiences. I have not had a good experience in my job, but I don't hold that my counterpart has had a similarly bad experience. It may be true that the drummer of Rush expressed his disdain in a manner similar to yours, but that neither supports your argument nor makes your position the correct one. Fans are fanatics: they do things out of love for a band. They enjoy the band, and they sometimes make things up to glorify it. So what. Part of being a pop star is ignoring the stupidity associated with it all. These very people you attack are nonetheless the SAME people who make you successful. You can't have your cake, and eat it, too. When we offered to do a website for Alex's Badorb project, it was out of our dedication and love of the Orb, and its side projects. You are not Alex's spokesman, and you have no right to make judgments about our offers as his spokesman. Your initial response was out of anger, an anger you hold based on something that happened years ago in another country. You can't possibly maintain that Alex agrees with you; the only way to find out is to ask him. I guarantee he wouldn't necessarily agree with you. Not everyone in the world is a sour old cod like you, and you should really understand that you have thoroughly upset some very dedicated fans of the Orb, who have offered their resources and time to do something for the band, for the label Alex has created, to make it more successful. THAT is dedication. If you are angry, then keep it to yourself, or seek psychological counseling. But projecting your anger on us, who have nothing to do with you other than a similar like (the Orb), is irrational, mean, and rather distasteful. Hi Gang, As part of some beta testing, my company wants to setup a web site that can generate some modest traffic without a lot of advertising. As the lead for the beta program, I've decided to get a web server setup with the content of the six CD's from the CD-R tree this week. (Hopefully by wednesday.) The site will be co-located at Exodus Santa Clara and be allocated 10Mbit's worth of bandwidth. No banner ads. I believe I will be able to keep the site up for a while (many months). I am formally asking the orb community to be rude, crude, and vile to the servers. Mirror it. Use wget with no sleeps. Bored? DoS it. Pretend you're 16, horny, and pissed that the site has porn you can't get to because they canceled your stolen credit card. And share the site name with your friends. Once I confirm the purchase of a new domain name for the site, I will post the info. One thing to note -- we will be beta-testing some infrastructure stuff that will hold the site together. This means stuff is going to break from time to time (esp. early on). The intent is to be able to let it break and get a good post mortem before we bring it back online. So if it seems to disappear from time to time, please don't be too mad. Just mad enough to syn-flood us when we get back online. ;-) Unless there are any objections with the content I am selecting, I will move forward with this. If there some additional content (please, nothing that will hurt the band or get me in trouble!) that you would like to share, please let me know. I'll be more than happy to make the necessary arrangements to get it online and shared with rest of the world. - -Steve Lead Beta Manager for A Huge Evergrowing Pulsating Web Site that Rules From the Centre of the Ultraworld... CYDONIA REMIX CONTEST How about hosting a Cydonia remix contest on this new site? The deadline can be a date when you know the site will be stable. If you aren't interested, maybe somebody else will host a FTP site dedicated to this? An equal opportunity evaluation method will need to be set up. I propose that all tracks off all versions of Cydonia are acceptable (even snippets from other Orb tracks). I would like to hear if anyone else would be interested in such a concept. Please brainstorm up more ideas (rules,etc...) Even if there is no prize, I'm sure we'll all get to hear some good mixes. What would be really cool would be to have the winning remix released as part of a BadOrb monthly release. There might be some copyright issues with that, but it is something worth researching though... Sincerely, Lokaytion > I will move forward with this.
