It made an impact on me and permanently changed my view of the Orb (in the most positive way of course!) I never even knew what Alex looked like, or even heard him speak before this! I've never gone to a live show because my home is nowhere near any of their regular tour stops. (Which is funny because he mentioned Oklahoma as being "scary" in the interview! I had to pause it because I was laughing so much!!) Anyway, my Orb experience is limited to the CDs, this mailing list, and the few websites floating around. Now that I have seen and heard Alex, I feel like I've found another puzzle piece and I'm getting closer to knowing what The Orb is all about. Because of material I've found over the years, I look at a few of my other favorites differently as well. Orbital, Underworld and Aphex Twin come to mind. Underworld were the most suprising however. Their music always struck me as dark and detached, but after hearing the Lamac Live interview on http://dreamagoria.humpin.org/underworld/ , they are just a bunch of regular guys! They're humble and have the valuable ability to laugh at themselves. Because I've lived in America forever and have been smothered by all the mass-produced American pop stuff (Britney, Marilyn Manson, Eminem, etc..), I've never known musical artists to be anything other than a bunch of money-grubbing, hate-filled, mindless pawns with an "image" to uphold. On the other hand, it seems that most British artists are more normal people, down to earth. They have no image, they are simply who they are. I'm pleased to know that Alex is such a happy, whimsical guy! I've always found such people fascinating. These are the people who can go weeks without ever showing their bad side, and who could probably convince me that they don't have a bad side at all! In the 24 years I've been in existence, I've only met three people like this -- a girl I went to High School with and will probably never see again because we simply parted ways, a woman I worked with at a job a few years back and will probably never see again because I never got the chance to know her, and an amazingly kind fellow who managed a record store just down the road who passed away a few years back with heart failure at the age of 45 -- but (as you might have noticed) these people always have the unfortunate ability to disappear. (Maybe it's me, I dunno..) I'd like to meet Alex one day. It's not that I worship him or anything. I just want to sit down and say, "hey buddy, how ya doing.." ..First, I'd like to get out of America. It seems that happy, jolly, real people are just too rare over here. - -Jason > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-orb@lists.xmission.com > [mailto:owner-orb@lists.xmission.com]On Behalf Of Smiley > Sent: Sunday, January 28, 2001 8:02 AM > To: orbulletins@xmission.com > Subject: (orb) ORBULLETIN: Webchat with LX > > # This is an Orb announcement from the ORBULLETINS mailing list. > ORBULLETINS > > anyroad up, for your delectation...some information from dotmusic > that might > interest y'all: > > EXCLUSIVE: Alex Paterson from The Orb will be chatting live on Friday > February 2 at 5PM. > http://www.dotmusic.com/news/January2001/news17616.asp # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Jan 2001 08:28:23 -0700 From: "Jeff Stratton" Subject: RE: (orb) orb peel sessions i've been searching for '91, but can't really find anything out there. i just bought 92-95, looks like a reissue. i ordered the 91 through cdnow about 3-4 weeks ago (even though it was on backorder) and it's no longer available. anyone? > i just found that this disc is missing. i dont know how it happened. it was available just > not long ago. it shows as back order on cdnow. it this still available?? please help me > locate a replacement. thank you. gemini Shop online without a credit card http://www.rocketcash.com RocketCash, a NetZero subsidiary # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Jan 2001 13:25:32 -0800 From: Steve Shah Subject: Re: (orb) orb peel sessions I've got a 1991 that I picked up in November for the purpose of trading. I think you've well exceeded your 1.5Mb/s that you're allocated... Last time I did that I soaked a 10Mb/s link within a matter of minutes once the FTP sessions got going full blast. Honestly the best thing to do is get them sequentially, not in parallel. You'd be fine if you had 100Mb/s to the backbone, but that costs a lot. :) You might also try transferring them first to somewhere which is between you and the source, network-topologically. Then you can suck them down to the intermediary system and do the same from the intermediary to the destination. This gives you a little buffer, which reduces the amount of lost packets and related retries. But you still want to get them sequentially. 'james - -- James A. Crippen ,-./-. But he said 'and related retries' which is correct. A resend occurs when a packet's asociated ACK has not been received within the TCP window, or when the checksum doesn't add up and a resend is requested. I build routers for a living, I have to know this stuff. And it's really embarassing to get caught being stupid in a public forum like this, too. :) TCP does guarantee delivery, but you pay the penalty for it if your link is poor, which is usually true over long routes across the net, especially around major peering sites where a link is near saturation (which I've been seeing with some AboveNet links lately). Your packet will eventually get through, but you may have to resend it a couple of times. If you do an ordinary traceroute from a vanilla Unix box you will occasionally see '*'s printed out instead of a time. The asterisks are lost packets, and they're lost because an ordinary traceroute uses UDP to do its magic. (I say 'ordinary' traceroute because some traceroute utilities will let you do ICMP traceroutes too.) These lost packets don't occur with TCP -- instead the packet is retried, ie resent to the destination. Interesting problems crop up when the destination receives two copies of the same packet and doesn't discard one of them (which is nonstandard, but not too uncommon). Anyway, I won't bore you with unorbicious details... :) (Oh, okay, so asterisks aren't necessarily lost packets, they're just what is printed if no response is detected within 5 seconds, but that usually means the same thing (unless of course the system doesn't believe in sending ICMP 'time exceeded' messages, or uses an improper TTL, or...))
