Can someone please recommend an FTP client or web browser plug-in or whatever that I could use to perhaps successfully actually download something from the Chain Reaction FTP site? I've been trying and trying to get those Groovetech shows to no avail. I'm at work, so this needs to be under Windholes and not Mac (unfortunately). I've been trying a freeware FTP client called FTP Explorer, and I do "get in" with it and browse directories, but as soon as I try to download something it kicks me out, something to do with multiple sessions (I think it's trying to keep a second session open for the "explorer" window in addition to the download session). I've also tried good (bad) old Internet Explorer, but I'm not at all sure I'm using the right protocol for the URL. If someone could post a working link I could use to get to the "pub" directory from IE, I'd appreciate that, too. I've been trying ftp://orb.orb@137.224.147.130:21 but I just get an error saying the session was terminated. Very annoying. Any help will be much appreciated. I'm dying to hear those Groovetech sets, along with some of the other gear on there... Thanks in advance. Admittedly true, but, I just don't appreciate festivals the way I used to (getting too old, jaded, and cranky). Plus, aside from bitches about the location and amenities; festival sets generally don't actually satisfy my urge to see someone perform; too short, too cramped, too rushed, etc., etc. I'd much rather see (and pay for) the individual shows for the people I want to see, and have a better overall experience. Like I said, I hope Coachella doesn't become an ongoing excuse/justification to "skip" a proper LA show for a bunch of really good performers. What disturbs me now is that posting seems to have become a culture to be shared by few. No offence to those guys who post info, greatly is it appreciated, and yes you do know a heck of a lot about the Orb, but the friendliness has just dissolved, its always the same people posting and heaven forbid anyone else saying owt. Now, whether these feelings exists or not, I certainly get the vibes. Its odd to think that a while ago I posted and didnt give a damn if anyone said 'that lass knows jack shit' and yet now I think well, I am imtruding on something. I would love to know how many people are on this list as compares to who posts and who welcomes new postings. I for one have certainly noticed over the last few months the struggle made by people to be heard and in turn their closure by others. Maybe I will be bellowed at to leave this list, I dunno. Well, I just lurk mainly, and I enjoy lurking, reading what people have to say, and maaaaybe once in a while posting something if it's a poll. But recently I've been seeing stuff that's almost personal attacks, and that just makes me plain uncomfortable. Tour dates, cool! Discussion of samples, cool! Talking about what other music you like, cool! Discussion of DJs, cool! Dissing people about what they do, or what they like, not cool. Unless they like Backstreet Boys, then it's OK to make fun of them =P - ---- Jeff A Klein Bottle has zero volume, so we suggest that you do not use it as a personal flotation device. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Mar 2001 21:36:28 -0500 From: "Carlos Serrano" Subject: RE: (orb) Cydonia Vinyl :: and thoughts of Cydonia.. >>the cheapest ive been able to find this is $30 after tax and shipping or whatever. anyone know a >>cheaper place online that i could get it around like $25 including shipping and what not. thanx :: i stopped into 'other music' here in new york city. no better, saw the vinyl for $31.99 there..too much for me now but i grabbed the uk/EDM version on cd for $17.99 i could've shopped around, but i would have to wait that much longer to hear it :::8? ) so after 2 days of listening, hehe i miss yungle, but love all the newness but must admit 'centuries' still has some growing on me to do but as usual, alex and his pals leave me tingling with inspiration and a craving 'beer not milk...beer' quick question regarding egnable:: i haven't caught the source mentioned yet, but is that The Man himself?! or just another great audial find ?!? off to play with some sounds, till later.. thanks all! carlos aka damadprofessor webspinner You're Probably Lost! I've been on this list for 5 years. I don't post all that much, and usually when I do it doesn't require a response, but I'm voicing my opinion on this topic. I've made many a friend on this list, quite a few of whom have moved out of the virtual realm to become a signifigant part of my offline life. (Right Chad? Steve0? Seofon? Sean?). Conversely, I also liberally use my delete key when there are threads I don't care about, and have even gone so far as to filter out messages from members that might regularly annoy me. There's hundreds of people on this list - you're bound to not like/agree with/understand everyone. Although Smiley and JC may be the resident officiandos, in the course of 5 years I have seen the regular posters come and go. .. there's always a cycling of who dominates the discussion. And while poeple disagree with each other's opinions, I've rarely seen outright bashing, namecalling or the like. In fact, I find people to be most helpful, and receptive to other's input. (Mind you, I deleted that whole thread about DJ definitions, so maybe I missed something ugly!) IMHO, this list is a great community - I can always find someone to share my excitement over the score of a rare item, help me locate records outside of my country of residence, and get me tour dates before they're published locally. What more can you want from a list? Steve0 - stop frontin and send us that interview transcript! ;) BTW, Revolutuion this month has a nice little blurb about Cydonia, along with the newest press photo of LX holding the model bus: Now, after a 3 year hiatus, Paterson (alongside co-conspirator Thomas Fehlmann) resurfaces with Cydonia. And thankfully, The Orb's 5th full-length album recaptures the formula that once, a decade ago, made them great. Cydonia, ready for nearly 2 years (put on hold due to impending sale of his UK label Island) reminds even Paterson of his stunning debut, and for good reason. Cydonia, like ABTU, is a wickedly engaging concept album brimming with wry Monty-Python-style British humour (Egnable), the kind that scoffs when you just passively sit back and listen to its intense ambient dub (Turn It Down) and junglized drum n bass (Thursday's Keeper). Cydonia demands that you plug in and pay attention, especially for the lovely vocals that really stand out here. Japanese singer Aki adds her delicate touches to Once More and Centuries, and Ninan Walsh's lucid lullaby shimmers on Ghostdancing. Make no mistake: The Orb's globular ambient soup is weird and wild. But in the end, is what makes them wonderful. =) rachel # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ End of orb-digest V2 #425 *************************
