Just found out that Goldie is going to be here on May 10 and tickets are $10. I definitely want to go, but the show isn't all ages. I am quite mad as I wanted to see him and was very excited about it. Why do they do that, why do the younger ones have to be discriminated against and not allowed to go see the groups that they want. I have already mixed AFX, The Crystal Method, Daft Punk, and now Goldie. FUCK! Also found out that my B12 cd not going to arrive for another couple of weeks. I'm 17 and live in Columbus, OH. I have been watching this group for a while and never really said much till now for some reason. I love the converstaions that go on here. Orbital is my favorite band ever. I've only known about them since The Box came out as a video on MTV. I quickly worked my way from InSides backwards though and have found enjoyment in all of the Orbital I own now. Trust me it wasn't easy finding stuff in the Mid-west. Normally when I talk about Orbital most people look at me as if I was on crack or something. All that stuff said and done I have one small thing. I was watching this news show the other night and they played The Box as promo music for their next segment. Someone out there is listening and knows who to sneak good music into the oddist places. If you've never heard of the Kosmic Free Music Foundation, I'll go ahead and recommend them.. ---> http://www.kosmic.org/mainpage.html For those of you who don't know, they are a group of about 35 guys who produce all of their music in MOD format (or XM, S3M, IT, etc..) in their spare time. And it's some professional-sounding stuff IMO! Their styles include traditional house, trip-hop, acid, rave, ambient, trance, intelligent techno (whatever that is..?), and there's even a few bits of Muzak thrown in for good measure. ;) A few artists I'd reccomend are: Ringlord -- I'm convinced he's the unknown Hartnoll brother. ;) Basehead -- "Chiba City Lights" from 1994 is an 18-minute masterpiece! Highly recommended! << http://www.kosmic.org/kosmic/songs/94/klf-chib.zip >> I can't really describe his works, they call it "progressive house".. It's damn good, whatever it is! Maelcum -- The guy in charge. House, Acid-Trance, Ambient.. whatever you want, he CAN deliver! Chuck Biscuits -- Like Basehead, he hasn't produced anything in over a year.. but if you'd like some house, he's got the good stuff! Mental Floss -- heavy stuff.. 'nuff said! As for the rest of the members, you're likely to find something you like! (You just have to dig through a bit of "not-so-good" stuff to get there..) good luck! +--------------------------------------------------------+ + Quazi Jason Wallace wallajl@okstate.edu + + http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/9703/ + PS: Oh yeah, I'm new to the list. The first Plastikman album 'Sheet One' is better than 'Musik' though, seems to fit together better as an album rather than a collection of unrelated (but damn good!) tracks like 'Musik' does. The 'Recycled Plastik' mini-album is great too, more like 'Sheet One' than 'Musik'. His latest album 'Concept 1 96:CD' (that might be what it's called - it's difficult to tell as the sleeve is as minimal as the music) is VERY minimal, more so than anything I've ever heard. Most people would say it's boring I suppose, but I love it. I wouldn't say the FUSE album is much like 'Tri repetae' or 'Chiastic Slide'-era Autechre, but I can see the link with 'Incunabula'. Hardly surprising as they were both part of Warp's 'Artificial Intelligence' series. Personally I prefer both Hawtin and Autechre's more recent, harsher, material. cheers, Jon - - Jon Green zcapn33@ucl.ac.uk "A mind more twisted than a bad hedge" # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Apr 1998 15:58:47 EDT From: kwikyslush@juno.com (Brandon M. Hardly surprising as they were both part of Warp's >'Artificial Intelligence' series. Personally I prefer both Hawtin and >Autechre's more recent, harsher, material. I'm sorry, what is this FUSE album? Is that the artist (FUSE aka Hawtin?) or is that the name of the album? When was it released? Thanks. "Sacrebleu" b= y Dimitri from Paris is a pretty good cd, but I'd ahve to say that Air's cd is with out a doubt better. Another excellent cd in a similar vein is United Future Organization's "3rd Perspective" Hard album to try to classify, but whenver I play it in my dorm room, people knock on my door and ask if I'm playing James Bond or spy film music. It's quite good, heavy on the polyrhythmic jazz, and is always a treat to listen to. Of course, any techno purists should shy away from it, because it seems to be done entirely with actual instruments, although there is still a distict drum 'n bass feel to many tracks. Anyways, anyone who like Air, Dimitri from Paris, the new Stereolab, or Propellerheads ought to at least give this cd one listen. I'll shut up now. Ryan Randall p.s. Was the first "Blech" cd also mixed by Strictly and PC? Is it too a mix tape of sorts? Is it really out of print? Just wondering, because I adore "Blechsd=F6ttir".... # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Apr 1998 20:11:49 +0800 (SST) From: sheusum Subject: Re: (orbital) AIR and similar music At 02:33 AM 4/27/98 -0700, clerc2@pe.net wrote: > >... just to run a little bit further with this discussion... With remixes by 4 Hero, Attica blue, Roni Size, Flytronic the acid jazz/drum 'n' bass/jungle combination just blows your mind.... And for those who loves Dimitri from Paris, I strongly recommend Mixmag's Monsieur Dimitri's Deluxe House of Funk. Toronto was the last stop for North America on their Bridges to Babylon tour (also the first because they played a surprise show at the Horseshoe Tavern near the end of their rehersal time here in Toronto)... It wasn't supposed to be though, the concert was rescheduled from 9 January 'cuz Mick was sick. I didn't like it being on a Sunday night, 'cuz I got home at 1:30, and I had to get up for school like always at 5:45. *yawn* Anyway, I can't say I'm a big stones fan.. I got tickets because it was rumored the Smashing Pumpkins were opening the Toronto date, but it ended up being Wide Mouth Mason (cool bluesy group from out west.. I'd seen them before with treble charger) The show started at 7:30, and we got there a little bit before.. they were playing some cool drum'n'bass I'd heard before.. then wide mouth mason came on, and they played about an hour. Then, of course, they had to reset the stage and all that kinda thing. I can't remember how long it took, but they were playing all kinds of British acts. They played breathe by the prodigy. Grr. And no Orbital. Bigger grr. Then the stones came on, and they played like two and a half hours. The show was great, but it just... lacked something. My dad said it was the best concert he's ever been to, my biology teacher who was also there agrees.. but I beg to differ. Of all the concerts I've been to, Orbital at Lollapalooza still tops the list. The lighting and fireworks everything like that (GLITTER!!!) last night, while it was great.. It seemed just all for show.. you know? "Hey, we're big stars, you paid a lot of money to see us prance around, now we're gonna flash some lights in your face and shoot glitter out over the crowd." It's not that I wasn't into the music, it's not that there weren't a lot of people there (sold out crowd of 55,000).... There was just ****SOMETHING**** missing. I dunno what. Lollapalooza was more fun, dancing around, forcefully grabbing people I didn't know and making them get up on chairs and dance (Hey-- it worked. by the end, like everybody near me was up and dancing).... there was just such a vibe and it was amazing and perfect, and they'd better tour soon or I'll be mad. But they gotta finish the album first, and I'm willing to wait for it as long as it takes for them to do their best. Anyway, I had fun just the same.. and on the subway ride there, I had three cute british guys (with cute accents to match) sitting across from me, and they were staring at my Orbital shirt.. I'd been sorta humming/singing to myself, so when I noticed them looking, I started singing halcyon, and one of them just looked at me and smiled. Coolio. - --- Aimee Deal with it some other time- guess it's not that easy though. The pain turns into laughter, eventually the smile turns into tears, I'm still around here. - --Jonathan Romley get your free gURLmAIL at http://www.gURLmAIL.com # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Apr 1998 13:32:44 -0400 From: Morey Gamble Subject: Re: (orbital) Re: chem bros > Yes, i'd agree w/ this person, but none of you really *know* their sound > unless you've heard their 3 12" only Dust Brothers releases (pre- exit > planet dust). I've got all 3, and no doubt it's their best stuff. They're > all extremely rare, and unfortunately most of you will never hear 'em. I've got the 'Song to the Siren' 12" and on there, I think I like the Full Sabre mix the best (although it's definitely a little different from the typical Chem. style). I admit I haven't heard the others, but either myself or one of my roommates has or had everything they've released since. - -Morey - -Morey # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------ End of orbital-digest V2 #69 ****************************
