It's like everybodys become...I don't know, so "numb" to whats going on in the world theres a need for people to shock themselves just to feel alive. Even though theres all this terrible stuff going on all the time news has become little more than entertainment. I was watching the news the other day...usual shit, death destruction murder..the newsreader turned to the camera even before she'd finished speaking, smiled then winked. I wasn't on acid at the time, kind of wish I was. Anyway, I saw on one of coldcut's record sleeves a description of the human race as "a burger eating cancer", and the phrase has stuck in my mind ever since. Seems few people want to talk about those things for fear of being politically minded. Everybody knows politics sucks. Well anyway...wish I knew the answers I'm just a sick monkey after all..But I do know it's best not to become too obsessed with the bad things in the world or you make yourself ill. Keep an open mind and see the good things as well, even if they arn't that important. What about our society? You are right, and it's all caused by power struggle. The media is abused and misinformation is given for the benefit of not the government, but for the corporations. Innocent people die for another persons wealth, money and power arn't evil..people like to blame market forces because it's convenient..if you use money and power for good things it's good but that's not the way it's directed, it's directed thoughtlessly and selfishly and we just end up screwing things up...which just leads to more power struggle. It's made easy for you to go along with this setup...think about it, whose benefit. People are made out to be inherently evil and a threat rather than to be helped, and death is sold as peace. That is why people look for the kill, it's a quick fix, they don't understand the bigger picture because it's not given & most don't want to try. People also like to see people doing well, occasionally, don't forget that, and if they could most people would rather see positive than negative. I watch that guy on TV set his car on fire and then eventually shoot himself and while I was slightly disturbed by the fact that he was did this to himself, I think the media had every right to show this on television. As a matter of fact, I myself was angry at the fact that some news stations here decided that whenever they felt he might go ahead and dispose of himself, theyd cut to a shot of the freeway that was blocked off due to his beef with the HMOs. This came off to me as the media shielding our eyes from this which is essentially pretending that its not happening. Incidences like these must be seen or we'll become a world of people who are unaware of the long and short term consequences of death. As for the sniveling ninnies out here in LA that were complaining about the fact that on some networks it interrupted the mind numbing drudgery we call kids' afternoon cartoons(whatever happened to go-bots?): These same type of people that are using this as an excuse to complain are the same people who will take their children to rated 'R' movies like interview with a vampire and the like!!!! How's that for double standards? Every year they do studies on the number of kids that are allowed to view these movies and they are younger and younger every year. The problem isnt with the media showing these images, Its with the parents that allow their children to view acts of violence without discussing and distinguishing right from wrong with their children so that items like these dont happen again. If you can get someone's attention, then whatever you're doing or going through, that person is to a degree as well. The reasons are different for different people. I honestly think there's a pretty good chance that TV has a lot to do with it. I'm not saying that it's TV's fault, but too many parents have let their children be raised and baby-sat by television. Kids grow up starved for human attention of any kind. I know a girl who admits that her mother always plopped her down in front of the TV when she was too busy to be bothered. This girl grew up in this situation, and now she has to have constant attention of one kind or another, or she is absolutely unbearable. She gets edgy if the TV is turned off. She needs the hum of it in the air. (I'm not making this up) She would rather have the tv on with static and the sound turned down that have it turned off. I try not to hold it against her, as it's not really her fault, but it's a direct product of lazy parenting. Note: I don't make any claims about knowing how to raise a child. I merely believe that the aforementioned method of dealing with children is not acceptable. If children are raised by TV, they can grow up feeling as if they need to seek the approval of the television world. This is just my opinion, but I think there's probably some truth buried in all that babble. - -Morey gandalf@wnc.com The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 May 1998 19:17:53 +0100 From: "Price, Steve A" Subject: (orbital) Gary Numan Didnt see a reply to "who is Gary Numan" (spelt in various ways...). Most banco stuff sits somewhere in between trance and ambient. He released 3 or 4 albums in the very early 90's but those were only released on cassette and sold at his shows, good luck finding them. He has released 4 full-length CD's that are still readily available. The first one is from '94 and is called 'Maya'. It's by far the most upbeat of all of them. Very trancey, but on the mellow side, occasional breakbeats Best songs (i think) are Heliopolis, Mafich Arabi, Qurna, And Lai Lah. All of his stuff has a very far eastern feel to it. Kinda like Transglobal underground or Loop Guru but much less so (and much better, too). I _very_ highly reccomend this album. His second was from '95 and is called 'Last Train to Lhasa'. It's overall a lot mellower even than Maya, but also an incredible album. Best songs - Last Train to Lhasa, Kincajou, China, White Paint. (The US version at least has a bonus disc featuring, among other things, a 36-minute remix of kincajou that's just amazing). His next album was 'Live at Glastonbury'. It's probably the album that best represents his 'sound', being mainly stuff from the first two albums, as well as an older song or two. Best songs - All of it. His newest album is called "Big Men Cry", and this one was recorded with a full band. He even added Dick Parry on sax (this is the guy that played on 'Dark Side of the Moon' and 'Wish You Were Here). This album, while not quite as amazing as his other albums, is still really damn good. Best songs - Celestine, Drunk as a Monk, Big Men Cry, Gates does Windows. Wow, I didn't realize I had that much to say. Anyway, check this stuff out, anyone that hasn't. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 May 1998 18:56:00 -0400 From: endermaker@juno.com (Ender L Wright) Subject: Re: (orbital) the box >has anyone ever really thought about the box? i have both insides w/ >bonus >cd's. on the first issue of in sides.......there are two versions of >the box. >well, that's a given. on the times fly ep there is the box ( the long >version >). the long version has four parts to it. thus, making the box six >sided. >either i have way to much time on my hands or i'm just really bored. >well, >north central texas. i think it's both. =) > >burrito > >p.s. i do realize that i was rambling and made hardly any sense wow, sorry but that really just caught my attention, since there are some at least semi- deep thinkers maybe I can get the answer to a question I've been wondering about for a while, "why is luch divided into numbers (the box is not) while all of them begin with 3 (3-X) just wondering, and I live in the US so does anyone know where I can get a copy of Halcyon? thanx for your time and space... - -Ender _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. During the concert, one guy got the shit kicked out of by a group of people, some chick who was crowd surfing got pulled down by some guy and thrown to the ground. This girl was taken away on a stretcher and she had blood pouring down her face. One of my friends who was crowd surfing got thrown on to the ground. A security guard threw some girl head first into a metal fence type baricade. It was pretty bad to see all of this. It almost ruined the concert for me. A band called Happy Grindcore is going to open for a local guy I've been wanting to see for a while, and I want to know if anyone has any info on them. From searching the web I've found that one or more members of Atari Teenage Riot is in the band. I saw one RealMovie that didn't show their faces, and a sound clip of them fighting in German with "The Punks." I also saw assorted tour dates in NYC and Germany. Any help? I tried the DHR site, but it's down for awhile... I'd like to know who from ATR is in the band. First, there was Lush 1 and Lush 2. The first one was so crappy and buggy you couldn't even listen to it, and the second one just kept crashing. Then they made the fantastic Lush 3-1 and even went a step further to get to Lush 3-2 (it's real name is +ACI-LFW 3-11+ACI- though). Some other artists tried to make sequels and they were great at their attempts, but the sequels just weren't marketed enough -- and got forgotten real soon. On In-Sides (regular disc), you get 2 parts of it. But then on the Box single you get 4 parts. But the 1st part on The Box single is virtually the same as the second part on In-Sides. So, basically, they could flow in a great rhythm if they were all played one after the other. Just an opinion.
