The documentary features about 2 minutes of Orbital twiddling knobs, and then jumps to the next artist just as the song is beginning to start, but it's well worth watching for the whirlwind tour of electronic music from John Cage to Kraftwerk to FSOL to Prodigy. The music is never really given much of a chance (a couple of minutes per artist, which is pretty trivial for this genre), but the interviews are terrific, ranging from utterly inarticulate (Autechre) to rather perverse (FSOL). Naturally, my favorite "electronica" (did Spin coin that damned word?) ensemble, Underworld, was overlooked, as was the whole Chicago/Wax Trax!/Industrial scene, but what do you expect from life? # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Sep 1998 13:27:43 GMT From: "Tim 'Gouranga' Wynne" Subject: Re: (orbital) Guess What!!!!?????!!!!! > Ah well, if we're all feeling pleased with ourselves, then I'll let you all > know I got the Back to The Planet 'Daydream' promo with Orbital mix. [OT] Hey all... I just realized I haven't made a post to this list in a long long while. I have a few minutes till I have to go out to work so here goes... Summing it all up, Orbital is still my number one. Underworld, having heard a lot they have done, are pretty high up there too. I still am in love with Spooky, Orb and FSOL, but lately (this means the last year or so) I've been straying into drum & bass waters. I've been into Goldie and Metalheadz stuff before, but now I am getting my hands on any drum & bass compilation I can. This is the music I listen to when I walk, drive, work, eat, sleep and ummm..:) you know :), and in general, this is the music I breathe to. Right now I am listening to "Atmospheric Drum & Bass vol. 4", disc one track two called "Listen To The Way" by Minx. I know "brilliant" is the word Steve would use to describe a track he loves, but this is much much more. Sadly, I've never been good in describing music, so all I can do is give you people some recommendations. So listen very carefully, you've GOT to get : 1. Atmospheric Drum & Bass 2 - mixed by Aphrodite ; features tracks like Sweet Mind (Aphrodite), Something (Sirens) and To Ya! (Flytronix). It's purpose is to play in the cd-rom when you're hitting it off in Mortal Kombat 4 :-) 2. V Classic - a weird metal box (sorta like a cigarette-box) with 3 CDs inside. Features artists like Krust, Die, Suv, Roni Size, Dillinja, Ray Keith etc. Exceptional tracks are Goldie's remix of "The Calling" by Roni Size and Scorpio's "Li-Li". 3. Moving Shadow 98.1 promo - I just recently got this from Arrone (hi!:)) and the best way to describe it is "kicks major butt". I've been acting like GLUED to track 6, "Tough at the top" by E-Z Rollers. These last two days that's been all I was playing. I had to step down and switch to Atmospheric 4 because I got so exhausted -- you can't listen to Tough at the top and remain still. I always have to dance. Can't wait till I get my hands on 98.2 4. This is drum & bass - what a generic title. But this 3 CD compo is anything but generic. Has loads of exceptional tracks, my personal favorites are DJ Pulse remix of "Candles" by Alex Reece (always reminds me of someone on this list :)), PFM mix of "The Sea" by St. Etienne, Roni Size mix of "The Trip" by Skylab [the sexiest female vocal I've heard in a long time] and Blu Mar Ten's "Fountain". But everything else rocks too. Arrgh, sorry people but that's it, I gotta get outta here or I'll be late. Seeya all soon. Can't wait till I get my hands on 98.2 I picked this one up back in May, and I think it's pretty good. I like the first half of it way better than the second half, and the Origin Unknown remix of Tough at the Top is probably the jungle song of the year so far. Everyone is playing it; it's on every single friggin' mix CD I've seen. It's also on the mew Dieselboy CD, as well as the new Dara CD, and it's on a Darkstar mixtape I have. I think this is a great song, but I just can't take it anymore. (On another note, I bought the EZ Rollers 'Weekend World' LP on the strength of this song. If you're considering it, listen first if at all possible.) > 4. This is drum & bass - what a generic title. But this 3 CD compo > is anything but generic. Well, the stuff I have has been collected from a wide number of sources. I had a friend who ran a record store in town here for about 6 months (as long as he could afford to stay open), and I got a lot of really top stuff from him. For good Jungle stuff, try breakbeat science (www.breakbeatscience.com). I've also had good luck with CDNow and ab-cd. Oh, if you like ez-rollers, go to www.cductive.com and create yourself an ez rollers cd. Last time I checked, they had something like 25-30 ez rollers tracks available. $4.99 for the first track, $1.00 for each additional track. They have a pretty extensive jungle selection, as well as big-beat, house, trance, trip hop, etc.. And they have real audio samples of _everything_. - -Morey gandalf@wnc.com We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars. -Oscar Wilde # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Sep 1998 19:40:12 +0200 From: "Daniel Kasaj" Subject: Re: (orbital) back from the dead ? I agree. You have good taste. :) You too mate, and not just in music. by the looks of yer email address you must be a Tolkien fan :) Daniel ::::::::::::::::: "why don't you call me, i feel like flying in two" - ---8<------------------------ [ http://www.monitor.hr , http://www.monitor.hr/ratnici/ ] # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Sep 1998 00:13:53 +0200 From: "Daniel Kasaj" Subject: (orbital) it's past midnight... ...which means i'm 21 now. Its more of a track written by the boys and Mr Hazel instead of an Orbital remix. If anyone has actually heard the original Pied Piper track then u will realise what the "collaboration" did for the track. top stuff.... Hi folks, I just got back from a trip to Atlanta where I picked up a crapload of good music on vinyl as well as an interesting news bit. While there, I heard a commercial for a conference of sorts called "Cyberfest" or something to that effect. This commercial starts out with the sample "Would you like to study philosophy..." and from there, includes about 6 different Orbital songs. I had my headphones on when it happened, so I couldnt record it. Killer commercial though. If anyone wants to know what I purchased at Satellite Records, ask and Ill be happy to tell. .MatthewFord. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Sep 1998 19:30:28 +0100 From: Jon Green Subject: Re: (orbital) That damn Pied Piper re-release At 00:24 24/09/98 +0100, Price, Steve A wrote: >Gotta clear summit up about Pied Piper...Golden Girls...whatever guise >it takes shape in.
