Out of lurker mode long enough to hassle you with a couple of non-Orbital related questions: 1) I picked up a used copy of Autechre's Incanubula (sp?) a couple of weeks ago (only CA$7.49 - a steal!), and I have to say that I absolutely love it! The more I listen to it, the better it sounds! The question> How does this compare to other Autechre stuff? If I like this one, what should I look for next? 2) Photek - Have heard a lot about him, but have not actually heard him. My choices seem to be: RISC vs Reward (2 EPs on one disc), Modus Operandi album, Modus Operandi single, or the new Form and Function. Where to start? Is there one disc which would serve as a good introduction? OH MY GOD, I CANNOT WAIT TIL FEBRUARY!!!! Every song on it is good...there's lots of heavy "Industrial" sounding songs and there's also some really nice slow ambient tracks. It's my favorite Autechre album with Incunabula coming in second. Amber is also very good. I'm not a big fan of their newest though (the black one, whatever it's called). I haven't got Amber, but Incunabula is my least favourite of the four I have got. I just prefer the edgy harsh sounds on the others, especially Chiastic Slide, which now seems to have overtaken LP5 as my favourite. If you like Incunabula, I'd recommend the FUSE (Richie Hawtin, aka Plastikman) album 'Dimension Intrusion', there are some really nice mellow tracks, like most of Incunabula, and some harder ones that sound more like Plastikman. It was also on Warp, at about the same time as Incunabula came out. The Amorphous Androgynous (aka FSOL) album 'Tales of Ephidrina' is good in a similar way too. And non-Orbital and non-Autechre related, the new Bush Records compilation 'Bush' is ace. cheers, Jon # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Nov 1998 15:09:26 -0500 From: STARpango Subject: Re: (orbital) P&P will come to USA - hold the line caller ;) (fwd) At 01:21 PM 11/12/98 -0500, you wrote: > > >sort of speaking of which.. any of you american orbital crackheads in the >dc/baltimore area?... maybe i'll C u at their show next year >:P well i live in columbus, ohio but i'll be going out to dc for he concert for sure!!! mikey g # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Nov 1998 13:17:01 -0700 From: "Skip Acuff" Subject: (orbital) [non-Orbital] Autechre and Photek -Reply Michael Mccomb asked: >>>I picked up a used copy of Autechre's Incanubula (sp?) a couple of weeks ago (only CA$7.49 - a steal!), and I have to say that I absolutely love it! If I like this one, what should I look for next?<<< You'll probably get a variety of responses on this, but welcome to the Ae experience in any event. About 18 months ago I started with their third album, Tri Repetae++ (1995) and then zig zagged back and forth in time to Incunabula (1993), then Chiastic Slide (1997), then Amber (1994), then Envane (EP-- 1997), then Cichli Suite (EP very loosely based on the Cichli track from Chiastic -- 1997) , then the Anti EP (1994), and now the 1998 self titled CD aka LP5. Where should you go next? The easiest items to buy in the states are Amber (on TVT), Tri Repetae (TVT) and LP5 (Nothing Records). Get all three. I received some very good advice from a member of this list, Mike Shepherd. I don't think he'll mind me copying that for you and others below: >>>As a personal recommendation, I would highly suggest for a first purchase that you get Tri Repeatae++ with the free bonus disc eps of Anvil Vapre and Garbage. Outstanding stuff. Amber and the Envane ep are my next two favorites although some people like these better than Tri Repeatae++. The reason for so much disagreement among Autechre fans is that their cd's are so stylistically different from one another so here's a fairly good guide: Start with Tri Repeatae++. If you want something less harsh and abrasive, buy everything that came out before it (Amber, Incunabula, etc.). If you want something harsher and more experimental, buy everything that came out after it (Envane, Chiastic Slide, Cichlisuite, etc.) I just bought Incunabula and it's fantastic too. To me, they are the most consistent artist out there. My first reaction is always, "I don't like this as much as their last cd," but then it always grows on me and I end up saying, "Boy was I stupid for not liking this!" Hope this helps some. What release(s) would make a good starting point? Thanks. well, depends on what you're into...incunabula, their 1st is warm analog early-90s idm stuff. chiastic slide, their most recent, is cold digital experimental stuff, still percussive but sounding more like recent coil stuff...the other stuff is in the middle...as others will say, the best starting place is the domestic tri repetae which has two eps on as well. if you think it's too cold/dark/weird, you might want to work backwards to amber, or if you think it's not experiemental enough try c.slide... np: autechre "teartear" <<< # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Nov 1998 14:20:39 -0600 From: Chris Kloehr Subject: RE: (orbital) P&P will come to USA - hold the line caller ;) (fwd) Does anyone think they will get anywhere near the mid-us (instead of on just the east and west coasts)? They are going to be all over the country and are coming to Dallas and Lawrence,KS both of which I am in between. The people who sing that aweful "Wanna put my tender, heart in a blender, want to grind it up to a beautiful oblivion" song...I REALLY hate that song. 5.) Dave Matthews (He has talent, I will admit, but I hate him) 10.) Puff Daddy (truly one of the most untalented pieces of crap ever...but he's makin' the green...gotta respect that). P.S. I just heard the Opus III song that Orbital sampled for Halcyon (It's a fine day)...very cool...I think I'll pick up the disc. Yeah, that's more like what I'll reply to.. Most Hated Ten 1) R'n'B music (you're right, ain't anything worse) 2) One-hit-wonder chart-topping dance tracks (Aqua, Hit'n'Run, Solid Harmonie, Tamperer, N--Trance, etc. etc. and the list goes on + on) 3) Nirvana (guess this is going to raise some heads) 4) Alanis Morrisette and any other follower of 'Female, solo artist with guitar' except for the brilliant Sarah McLachlan. 5) Modern Talking (they should never have been revived/remixed, die and let die, I say) 6) Jackson family (any of them) (don't matter if they're kings or queens of pop, just don't play them in my presence) 7) Fatboy Slim (heh, he just gets on my nerves all too much not to be listed here) 8) Nina (who doesn't remember 99 Luftballoons ... argh!) 9) Bon Jovi (he bothered me then and he bothers me now) [i'll leave this as it is, Halcyon sounded better with only the Belinda Carlisle sample anyway, imo.] 10) Elastica (due to their one hit being overplayed during world cup and getting on my nerves (again)) I've got really touchy, stingy nerves, ya see...
