I think Jason is refferring to the artists someone else mentioned (Atkins, Hawtin, Cox.) All three of those artists are well known to *US* because they are actually GOOD. They are not known to us because they have flashy videos on prime-time MTV or whore out their music to Coca-Cola commercials. If you haven't heard of them, it's because MTV doesn't like their music. That's the main point. Do most people like Crystal Meth because they really enjoy that type of music, or because Spin and MTV say that it's the Next Big Thing? A lot of people feel threatened that people will hear CM and go "I love techno," when really they can't stand most of it. Play some minimalist or ambient songs (Hawtin, Laswell, Namlook) for your friends and see what they say. Play one of Daft Punk's more repetitive songs (anything they've ever done, ever.) Play some spastic Paradinas or Jenkinson. Do they say "wow, I like this?" No. They say "when the hell is it going to DO something and stop repeating?" They ask, "is there any singing in this" or "what the hell is wrong with this shit?" Orbital's talent should be showcased with others of >similar talent. That would be nice for sure, what is talent is open to interpretation but I know I also like Aphex, Juan Atkins etc. My point is that I don't think it would be so easy to get all these people in one place at one time, and it might be expecting quite a lot when you think it through. This thing about artists/record labels selling out keeps appearing over and over, I know you didn't use those words but it just reminds me of it...Selling out is creating music with the intention of making money being most important. How much the records actually sell has nothing to do with it. I believe it also has nothing to do with what other artists appear at the venues they play. After all are Orbital to be responsible for the actions of everybody they could ever be associated with ? The fickle finger seems pointed at the record label here but if this is happening then it couldn't have been without some arrangement or agreement of some sort. When I first started going to acid parties etc, I was there to have a mad time but...also I was happy to be part of what I saw as being, in part, a backlash against the greed and actions of the music industry who by targeting their "product" were killing creativity, difference, freedom of expression etc... I knew I shouldn't have touched that evil drug, commercial chart music can really fuck with your head. :-) The way the free market operates it tends to channel energy most towards what is established and successful and not so much to anything new or innovative. This is a big pisser when it comes to art and music and all those things that are worth staying alive for. A lot of people understand me on that one I'm sure, it's nothing new. My way to deal with it now is to not immediately slam anything popular...and thats even when I don't like the music much - the point has got to be whats to be achieved from doing this, and thats not a lot without constructive criticism, a lot of the time all I see is people being hurt for really stupid reasons and nothing good as a result. Where I am I have got this impression of people becoming more desperate for an identity, looking for things, latching on to things. And at the same time you have this big push towards the breaking down of barriers, communication etc. And theres new integration globally, and disintegration locally...least thats how it seems to me. In gaining something are we all loosing something as well ? And the changing climate also...has everyone decided it's just too late so bollocks to it ? Or is it that we have realised we don't know anything ? The weather patterns are changing, I would say, and I'm not here to shout "dOoOoM" to you all, but all I've seen is reports of all this mad shit going on and no serious attention or attempt at an explanation. If it's been decided one isn't needed I'd still like to know that. Should I be wearing my UV protection or just get a big raincoat ? As you can see this really matters ! Just what's on my mind, if it came across as me having a go at any one person it wasn't my intention. :-) Bye, - -- - -- Mark S-D -- ICQ <1223078> # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 May 1999 18:16:08 +0100 From: "Richard Mellor" Subject: Re: (orbital) Style > > Daniel Kasaj wrote: > > > > > >what about the lyrics to style? my friend ben and i agreed on "jane, f**k > > > >your mum!" can anyone enlighten us? > > > > i have "wwwwalk now" and "now aching for you" theory. > > want me to present it? > > > "And now I'm aching for you" is what I hear.... That was such a hit at the time it came out (well, in bad-taste-for-music Norway, at least). Remember the whole thing still, even have it on some compilation tape too.. (back in those days when i only had tapes.. *shudder*) I think you see those two people in Dollar in the Style video. As the bug crosses the tv screen and the black-haired woman starts beating the newspaper in rhythm to the beat of the track, you'll see the two freakily "very" similar artists in Dollar.
