Quite interesting stuff... he carries on what one might have guessed his musical style might be upon hearing Flat beat!.. Very analogue, quite experimental and VERY minimalistic sequencer-arrangements.. Lotsa 70s loops... Scratching on some tracks.. Like said before it's all in a similar style to Flat Beat, though not a ripoff of it!.. But if you didn't like flatbeat, you won't like this one either! He's got the closed hihats and disted ultra-low bassdrums through most of his tracks though! 8) I dunno, i got somehow reminded of early Aphex Twin for a second, prolly due to the distorted bassdrum in some (most? 8) tracks, but then again It's much more minimalistic than Aphex and more rhythmic... Hey! 8) He sampled John Cleese's "And now for something completely different!" 8)))) Summing up: Some analogue synths and a 1210, maybe a sampler that's about it.. if you're into complex multi-layered stuff like Brendan this is not for you! 8) I wouldn't call it a kicker, but an effort to go into a different direction, which is always good!.. Not mind blowing, but definately worth a listen... They say that Cydonia (album name) is slotted for Mid-Feb. Here is the info I read on it: * the band were fronted a significant amount of money by Universal/Island to record the album (standard major-label operating procedure); * the costs of recording the album must be recouped from the sales of that album; * the band's contract specifies that sales of copies imported to the US from the UK/Europe do not count towards the band's recoupment of these monies; * therefore the band loses money if the album does not get a simultaneous release in the US and the UK/Europe; * additionally, the label are unlikely to fund a tour based on a UK/Europe-only release; * and the US branch of the label cannot seem to find a release slot they feel is suitable for the album; * therefore the album is not coming out yet. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Oct 1999 08:32:16 -0700 From: "Ian Mahuron" Subject: RE: (orbital) Orb Maybe the Orb should be talking to FFRR ;). I'm sorry to say but to me its better than Orbital... me being more of an Underworld fan than Orbital but besides the point to me it is X... its one long mix... they have screens with Tomoato art work which is alright... like the other guy said typical lights for techno show... and Karl Hyde jumps up and down all over the place live a big animal... Its lovely... however... they are not giving an NYC show which sucks... but thats ok... I'd give an arm and leg to go to Boston... my 2 cents Adam # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 06 Oct 1999 19:32:48 -0400 From: "Adam L." NO!!! Rob, I can't beleive Underowrld is in Town and I didn't know! Last time they came to Tokyo and I was in Hong Kong and rescheduled my flight to get back the day they played and went to buy the tickets the week they came out figured it is in a big place and it is Japan (how many Underworld fans could there be there?) and it is was way sold out. I guess that explains their reasons for releasing the CDs there first and the Japanese lyrics on every CD. But from now on, you gotta keep me updated! I missed them in DC by 2 days last year! It is my luck with these such things (Orbital, Underworld, Moby, BT). One of these days... Oh, and I have never seen Dr. Who and I don't know what ever ____3_ thing is either. Later. Wow, thats kinda hard to tape all 80 acts in 3 days isn't it? are they just taping the dance acts? Hey, if any DAT tapers on this list make it to Coachella, could you please tape Autechre, Pavement, Medeski Martin and Wood, Lamb, Underworld, u-ziq, Cornelius, and Beck. Thanks. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 06 Oct 1999 19:51:17 -0400 From: Kel Subject: Re: (orbital) Underworld! I mean, projection > screens, live material, etc? I saw their show at the Electric Factory in late April this year and I was knocked out. Karl was doing I'm-off-my-nut-style moves the entire time, dancing his ass off, he made an awesome sight. Darren and Rick were dressed in black and kind of laid low behind the samplers. They also had phat projections in back, a lot of Dubnobass style art, random words etc, mixed in with images of them broadcast live by an on-stage cameraman. I remember they started off with Air Towel and Rowla and Push Upstairs... played most of the Beaucoup Fish. The crowd went most mental for Born Slippy (which they switched the parts on, like Impact) and Bruce Lee, where Karl worked a Dubnobass-art-covered guitar with a midi pickup over the bridge. Also they ended their encore with Rez, which blew me sky-high... And best of all, there were like young kids and people as old as fifty on the floor... they even got the parents in the back to dance :) Sweet show, hope this wasn't a big spoiler. Have fun :) KEL :: "welcome to English Voodoo. expect to feel pleasure. because knowledge is sexy. expect to feel pain. because knowledge is torture." :: ;; http://members.xoom.com/_XOOM/chimester/index.htm ;; >> now playing :: Underworld >> Why why why? >> # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Oct 1999 20:22:49 -0700 From: "." Yep, definitely V99 Chelmsford - I remember them saying 'happy birthday mum'. Anyway, I'd put the cut between Dr Who/Chime at 4:54, this is where you hear the first twinkles of Chime even though the Dr Who drum track keeps going for another 26 seconds. Another choice could be 5:20 where chime kicks in properly. Oh, and did I mention that I want a copy? Phil : ) > -----Original Message----- > From: . What's the worst track Orbital has recorded? I don't listen to the Yellow album much. I find it a bit weak but they were young and finding their feet so I'll let them off. However, I can find absolutely no excuse for the abomination that is An Fhomhair. This track really grates on me like fingers on a blackboard. What where they thinking? There is, however, the issue of placement. Quality Seconds, while I don't mind listening to it, kills the mood evoked by the previous track. I wish it would have been put at the end of the album.
