Paterson created sort > of "homemade" ambient music, as these were the days before what we now know > as 'chill out'. certainly a valid point. the reason i said that is because i wasn't overly impressed - probably because of the "collaging" of which you speak. he didn't beatmatch anything, it was all psychadelic fades and washes and that seemed to me sort of cheap. which i guess is why i'm not the biggest fan of orb either. to each his/her own. so, can somebody tell me more about paul's djing? i'm really curious. or how about this one: why is it lush _3_? was there a lush 1 and lush 2? ooh.. maybe there's even some *gasp* demo versions lurking about out there! the mind boggles... (if nobody answers this, i'm going to ask steve if it's something that could go in the FAQ). nub # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Jan 2000 15:41:17 EST From: "Robert Schultz" Subject: (orbital) CJ Bolland Hello again to you all, Alright, you'll notice that this post is WAY off topic, but I have two issues that must be cleared up: 1) Bose speakers 2) CJ Bolland Alright, if uninterested, stop reading this. However, if you're still awake, read on :-) First, a coworker has a really good friend that works in upper management at Bose. He said he can "get me some stuff, just give him a wishlist." Now, I was looking at their product line, and I'm sure Bose encounters this often, but their speakers are MAD SMALL! I mean, I'm looking at the Acoustimass system, and it seems to be the best one for my price range and size of room (I guess). Now, has anyone here ever listened to a Bose system, and are they really THAT good? I'm looking for some input here, as I want to replace my shitty Cerwin Vega's with something good. I heard a while ago that Bose speakers aren't that loud at all, but they're very very clear, they they cover all areas of the sound spectrum. Can anyone help me out on that? Second, CJ Bolland. I saw him play earlier this year at Axis (also where Orbital played, and have some songs on the Satan eps) in Boston. It totally rocked my ass. I am aware he has a UK release called "Electronic Highway." I want this release, and am willing to make a trade for it, as it is probably quite rare by now, and I am unable to obtain it here. So, can someone help me out on this as well? Also, this is really asking for trouble, but he has other monikers as Sonic Solution and Ravesignal. That would be insane if I could get any material of that. I'm willing to hook anyone up nicely with whatever I can do. He played insane stuff at Axis, that I had never heard before, and I NEED to hear (and rock) to that stuff again. Thanks in advance to all! I've had the set (one subwoofer and the two satellites) for about ten years and they have never given me problems. The placement of the subwoofer is key. In a corner you will get the most bass out of it, the further away it is from the corner the less bass. I have my satellites positioned on top my entertainment cabinet. The thing I like with these is the directional use of the top part of the speakers. The sound is very clean for the highs and lows of the entire speaker system. Of course, Orbital sounds quite impressive through them. In addition to those speakers, I have two three way Realistic Speakers (yuch, but they do the job). The twelve in woofers handle quite ok- I blew out one years ago and have since replaced it. Finally, I have two JBL's for my surround speakers. All in all the package is quite nice. Like I said, the Bose I have been very satisfied with. For their size, they pack quite a punch. As far as CJ B, get the disc, I like it a lot. All the songs are great. Not a bad one in the bunch. Hope that helps ya. Bose speakers are famous for their unique bass formula. Bose, the founder, believed that the human ear had a weakness in the 50-150Hz range. All Bose speakers have an increased bass as that range. Some people think his formula is bullshit, but they are still top-notch speakers, in any case. I have a JBL speaker system that sounds good, but I've considered mixing it with a Bose bass amp. (First, I'd like to get some more powerful speakers. These damn tweaters pop too easily. I'm actually using my rarely-used fifth center speaker because my two front tweaters have popped again.) - -- Brendan Byrd AKA SineSwiper (SineSwiper@ResonatorSoft.com) Computer techie, PERL hacker, and all-purpose Internet guru Resonator Software (http://www.ResonatorSoft.com/) # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Jan 2000 12:32:57 -0000 From: "Nick King" Subject: (orbital) Orbital Live CD's Hi, I've just rejoined the list after a hiatus of just over a year, so forgive me if this questions been asked many times before... ...Some time ago, Steve Price sent out a message saying that Orbital were pressing up about 500 Live CD's only featuring 5 tracks. So, guess what? Best DJ name suggestion gets a free "DJ Kel" mix! Hey, who knows? This may be a collectors' item someday! If you like 'Electronic Highway', you should also check out his 'Analogue Theatre' album which has a similar feel to it. Tough, pounding tracks. It also contains the excellent 'Sugar is Sweeter' track. Speaking of which, I seem to remember there being some sort of controversy about this one when it was released. Apparently he nicked the tune from a Prodigy track. Can't recall the exact details though. And on a similar note, has anyone noticed the similarities between CJ Bolland's 'Con Spirito' track and Vangelis' 'Heaven and Hell'? Anyone know what I'm talking about? - It's either a dodgy 'tribute' track, or a complete rip off! How on Earth does he get away with it? I have another question... it's quite silly... I apologise in advance... but I'm dying to ask... are the Hartnoll brothers related to the actor William Hartnoll who once starred as ... wait for it... Dr Who? Errr... this is my first post to the list, by the way. Hello everyone! I like Orbital! Cheers! Hey, I saw Tall Paul spin in a club in Vancouver, Canada over the week end and I have to say that I was very disappointed. He brought a little side kick along that spun the majority of his set for him. Paul spun for maybe like 20-30 minutes of his 2 hour set. Not only that, he played a lot of trance that has been played on every trance mix cd out there. And all of his house was rather boring minimalistic four four beats. I have his cd Duty Free, and it's not that bad. So, I was wondering, do big DJ's usually have someone else spin for them, and is Tall Paul usually good? I have seen Carl Cox, Seb Fontaine, Anne Savage, Lisa Lashes, John Kelley, Omar Santana, Tony Faline, and DJ Laidback, just to name a few, and they all spun their own sets. My mum's got a Bose system with a big bass speaker in the middle of the room (obviously not in the centre - that would be crazy) and two satellites, two little speakers on each satellite. I think it sounds completely shit when compared with my trusty old Pioneers at home. The Boses seem to boost all the wrong frequencies; for example, instead of getting a nice thuddy sound on the "four-to-the-floor" bass drum, you just seem to hear all of the rumbling sounds beneath it, and if we ever played anything with a jungly 'sub-bass' sound in it then, Jesus, pity the people downstairs. Also, as it has three speakers, the person who set it up was forced to plug the bass speaker into one of the two stereo speaker output sockets on the back of the amp. Therefore, to add bass we had to turn up the left-hand side on the balance knob. I don't whether all this would apply to modern amps, though - my mum has got an amp that predates history, so that could have something to do with it. Nevertheless, I would stick with a two speaker system - at least you know where you are with them.
