TL ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Todd Landry Subject: (rabid-dogs) rabid-dogs mail list live Date: 06 Aug 1997 21:32:51 -0500 All, I've taken the liberty of subscribing you to the "rabid-dogs" mail list. The idea with this is to open it up to Sales Engineers (NC's now) so that we can carry on async (conference style) communication. I hope of course that it helps expand the reach we have to the people in the sales organization. As for who can get to the list, I expect it to be private. Since this is the first list I've setup I am experiencing some choking on some of the majordomo lists commands, but we'll get this figured out. In the meantime we'll need to inspect the list every now and then and clear the archive files on the server (the archives will need to get pulled into the Web page at some point). Kurtiss, you're proabably the most familiar with these so I'd ask your assistance in administering this site for a while. In the not to distant future we'll hire someone! On the good side this means we're well on target for having this in the 4.1 release. Following is information in additional features seen as key requirements for the Enterprise market. These are assumed in addition to the HiPer 4.1 FEature Set. Although you may ask - what are the 4.1 features now anyway we'll provide a complete list shortly. What we ask is your feedback on the list below. Please include: Priority: 1-5 (1 = low, 5 = high) Req'd: Yes or No Comments: Additional Features Not Listed: THANKS! Category A (Security Features) - Security Dynamics ACE Server (TACACS+) The Dynatron needs to implement TACACS+ for supporting the Security Dynamics ACE Server. Using the ACE Server, users can be configured to have a dynamic passcode or a fixed password. A passcode is generated by a card and the new ones are generated at fixed time intervals (usually 1 minute). Fixed passwords can be changed after the user get authenticated. The UI command for changing the fixed passwords should be supplied by the Dynatron. Since the ACE Server does not support the send-password feature, the PPP/CHAP can not be supported. Expertise required: IP, Security. - NDS via NLM + NW Bindery + NT User Database (AB Security Client) Today, EWD has several Security Client Applications to allow customers to integrate their security for remote access with the existing security schemes based on Microsoft Windows NT User Database, Novell Directory Services (NDS) and Novell Bindery Services. To make use of these Security Client Applications, the Dynatron needs to implement 3Com's proprietary Security Helper Protocol. Associated with this is an security server auto-discovery scheme that allow the Dynatron to auto-discover the Security Clients without pre-configuration. As of today, however, only the Windows NT Security Client release 1.1 (the latest version) supports the auto-discovery scheme. One alternative is to implement the Security Helper Protocol in the RADIUS Server Application. Expertise required: IP, Security. - Token-Based Login for PPP There is a demand for supporting token-based PPP login for Windows 95 and NT dialup clients since the PPTP is used (the PPTP data traffic supports only PPP packets). Because Windows 95 and NT don't have EAP support in their PPP stack yet, EWD has implemented a special software - which works as an SMM plug-in software in Windows 95/NT (the version for Windows 95 is called 3Access Windows 95 Security Plug-in V1.0, and the version for Windows NT is not available), to provide this functionality based on PPP EAP before the Windows 95/NT initiates their PPP stacks. The Dynatron needs to implement the PPP/EAP as well as some extensions as specified by EWD for supporting this token based login over PPP. Expertise required: PPP, Security. - IP and IPX Firewall (IP, IPX, RADIUS based) A firewall is a way to restrict access between the Internet and your internal network. Both IP and IPX firewalls are per user based and depend upon a RADIUS server to provide firewall rules. That is, the user based firewall rules will be delivered to the Dynatron in the RADIUS ACCESS ACCEPT packet during the authentication phase if the provided username and password are correct. A RADIUS Server with implementation of these 3Com firewall attributes is required. IP firewall rules consists of three kinds of filters, namely, Service Independent, Service Dependent, and Generic Filters. Some Service Dependent Filters are TelnetIn, TelnetOut, FTPIn, FTPOut, ICMP, SNMP, NTP, NNTPIn Source, NNTPOut, POPIn, POPOut, HTTPIn, HTTPOut, SMTPIn, SMTPOut, GopherIn, GopherOut, DNSSrvSrv, DNS, TFTP, UUCP and WAIS. IPX firewalls also consist of three types of filters: Network, Service, and Data Packet Filters. Network Filters are used to check IPX RIP response while Service Filters are for IPX SAP response. In some cases, Network and Service Filters are used for eliminating the memory required for storing the IPX RIP and SAP tables. Data Packet Filters are used for checking against the IPX data packets to make sure that no invalid access to the services could be done without permission. Expertise required: IP, IPX, RADIUS. Category B (NOS-Specific Features) - NetBIOS broadcast filtering + NetBIOS propagation filtering + NDS keepalive + Idle timeout NetBIOS broadcast and NDS keepalive packets need be filtered out for the idle timeout to work under some special circumstances. It is also very likely that another keepalive or broadcast packet needs be filtered out in the future because new applications and transport services continue to use some packets in a proprietary way for special purposes. Expertise required: NetBIOS, IP, IPX, Bridge. - NBFCP (Win95/NT) A Windows 95/NT client can use NetBEUI protocol to connect to a NT RAS server and access network resource. A Windows NT RAS server provides a NetBIOS gateway for a Windows 95/NT remote client, and performs NetBIOS name registration and resolution for a dialing NetBEUI client. If necessary, it will also do protocol translation between NetBIOS/NetBEUI and NetBIOS/IP for a remote client. A remote NetBEUI Windows 95/NT client can access a LAN based Windows station running IP protocol only via the NT NetBIOS Gateway. Implementing a NetBIOS gateway, however, is very complicated and will require a complete SMB protocol stack in the RAS. The Dynatron can support NetBEUI over PPP for Windows 95/NT clients by functioning as a NetBEUI bridge to Windows 95/NT clients (AB5000 did the same things). Please note that the Dynatron needs to have multiple Mac addresses to use since it uses unique Mac address for each remote NBFCP client that dials in (the remote client actually don't need and have a Mac address). Expertise required: PPP, NetBIOS, NetBEUI, Bridge. - DHCP (?) The Dynatron needs to implement DHCP for supporting dynamic IP address assignment through DHCP Server. Expertise required: IP, PPP. - WINS/DNIS IP Address Assignment Windows 95/NT clients require the Domain Name Server (DNS) and Windows Internet Name Server (WINS) IP addresses for resolving a logical name to an IP address. A DNS server is normally used to resolve an Internet domain name, while a WINS server is often used in a Microsoft Network environment to resolve a NetBIOS name to an IP address. The DNS and WINS server IP addresses may be configured on the client side, or can be assigned by a remote access server. The Dynatron can support the WINS/DNIS IP address assignment by implementing the IPCP extension for the DNS and WINS server IP addresses, as published by Microsoft. These IP addresses will be negotiated to the remote side when a Windows 95/NT (IPCP) client dials into the Dynatron. Expertise required: PPP. - CBCP Callback & Roaming To provide the callback function for Windows 95/NT clients, the Dynatron needs to implement Microsoft's PPP CallBack Control Protocol (CBCP). This support should include three modes of callback for Windows 95/NT clients: 1) no callback, 2) callback to a pre-configured phone number, and 3) callback to a user specified phone at connection time (roaming callback). The callback mode should be configured on a per user basis. Expertise required: PPP, Security, Conmgt. - NBP Multicast Filtering for ARA (?) AppleTalk tends to have a lot of duplicate traffic especially for NBP Request and Reply. AccessBuilder has implemented a filtering capability for filtering out the duplicate packets in a short time period to save the bandwidth in the WAN link with less overhead comparing to the Smart Buffering scheme designed by Apple for ARAP. It is unclear to me yet if this capability is required for PPP/ATCP connections or not. Expertise required: ARAP. - Trap Manager (use AB Trap Manager) EWD has a Trap Manager Application to collect SNMP traps sent out by AccessBuilder RAS. The traps are stored in Windows NT database and can be viewed later using the Windows NT's Event Viewer. To make use of the Trap Manager Application, the Dynatron needs to implement the SNMP traps. Expertise required: SNMP Traps. Category C (Ease of Use, Miscellaneous) - AccessWatch (Server Trap Implementation) AccessWatch is a Windows NT based application provided by EWD to facilitate the network management functions, such as Capacity Utilization Analysis, Quality of Service Analysis, and Remote Access Usage Analysis, based on the real-time and historical usage data supplied by AccessBuilder. The Dynatron can make use of AccessWatch by providing similar SNMP traps which have a special format. Expertise required: SNMP Traps. - BACP PPP BACP/BAP (Bandwidth Allocation Protocol) is a open standard (may still be a draft) for achieving bandwidth on demand and is very important to the PPP multilink users (such as ISDN users) because it will allow the customers to add or tear down a link as needed. To make it work, both the client and the RAS server (ie, the Dynatron) need to implement PPP BACP and BAP. Expertise required: PPP, Conmgt. --------------456200BCB55F7ADC2C01E998-- =========================Rabid Dogs Mailing List ========================= Email ``unsubscribe rabid-dogs'' to majordomo@xmission.com to be removed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Todd Landry Subject: (rabid-dogs) [Fwd: PPP over Frame Relay] Date: 29 Aug 1997 23:19:09 -0500 This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --------------9C19A4E11D95BA3222BAA697 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit --------------9C19A4E11D95BA3222BAA697 Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline Message-ID: <34079E28.6AFB4658@xmission.com> Reply-To: tlandry@xmission.com X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.01 [en] (Win95; I) MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Priority: 3 (Normal) Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit We are looking at putting PPP over Frame RElay into the HiPer in the furture (as part of the feature roadmap at this point) and I would like to know if anyone else out there sees this in use?
