From what you've said, your husband is thoughtful, he's good with his hands, he's interested in what you do . . those are all the kinds of things I'd write in "HIS" book. Never has any other gift meant as much or been so treasured. Well Paula.... I have an addition to what she wrote! I made up a journal for my husband and wrote down all these things I remember about him and just make me love him more. Like how he took me out to dinner when I was pregnant because I was craving something- even though he KNEW I was just going to throw up afterwards...LOL! I titled the book" Memories with the one I love" and since it wasn't completely filled I included a pen with it and wrote that as we share more memories I will add those to the book. It was the first gift I ever gave him that made him cry.... Just bought 2 books...written by Rabbi Yonassen Gershom, and they deal with people who have had "memories" from the Holocaust...yet were not born during that time...the "facts" in each case are almost impossible to ignore...and although I've been a believer for a long time, this strengthens my convictions. I've had recurring dreams in the sense that the PLACE I dream about is the same city each time...yet it is not the city where I live, nor is it any place familiar to me in my travels. I know everything about it - - the hotels, the bus stops, the train tracks. I know where the schools are. I know the shops. I know there is a shore...whether it's a lake or an ocean, I don't know, but there is water. I've had many dreams about myself and my current family being there...but I can't place the city. A psychic once told me that either I've been there in a past life, or will visit in this life in my future, or in a future life... Read "Many Lives, Many Masters" by Dr. Brian L. Weiss...it's uncanny. The two books by Rabbi Gershom I've gotten are: Beyond the Ashes From Ashes to Healing They'll provide entertaining reading, if not sway you to belief... Next...? Thanks for sharing...I truly believe that it was no coincidence, the time... I too was feeling something at the very moment my grandmother died, in 1979. I was awake, it was overnight. In those days - especially summertime - I liked to stay awake all night and hit the sack around 7 a.m....ahh, those younger days!... I was on the balcony, watching the sky go from dark to lighter to light... It was around 5 a.m...I wrote a poem, about how nature seems to take away from our troubles, even if just for a fleeting moment. My dog had been sitting next to me, watching any nocturnal activity he could. I watched squirrels awaken I heard the birds, I watched the sun begin to streak the sky...and I felt so peaceful. I went to bed around 6 a.m., and was awakened by my mother at 8:30 to tell us that my grandmother had slipped away sometime between 4 and 5:30 that morning, they thought (due to the time the nurses in the hospital did their bed checks, they were able to give us a range)...I truly believe the peace she was feeling at leaving her ravaged body was the peace I felt. And looking at her in her coffin before the funeral, I could swear I saw an aura, a soft glow around her head...I'll never forget it... I'd better stop now...I could go on and on about my beliefs... Thanks for sharing, colleen! Point your web browser at http://crafts.dm.net/ . - - ------------------------------ Date: 11 Feb 1998 11:47:38 -0500 From: Betty Goetz Subject: RS:why choose HALOS?(LONG) I'll jump right in here since I'm an avid HALOS addict and probably have 4-5000 images on HALOS to date.I realize that every stamper has a different set of criteria, and what I've chosen may not meet your needs, but perhaps by understanding what the options are, you can make your most educated choice. I've tried one of the stick-it-over-and-over products (Aleen's) as well as double-stick tape. My problems came when I had to renew the 'stick' (some images I use hundreds of times per week when I'm in one of THOSE frenzies) and storage was a major pain. I don't want to be sorting through um storage envelopes or boxes hunting for what I want. I tried putting the stick on the back of the die, and sticking the die to plastic page protectors in binders, but the stick on the back of the die just wore off through time. I needed to use cushion with this system...one more step to deal with and with the glue product, you have to WAIT for the glue to dry before you can use the um....I don't like waiting. AND, in a house which also holds a dog pack, lots of HAIR got stuck to that sticky stuff no matter what I did (OK....my housekeeping skills may have had SOMETHING to do with it) and that foreign matter reduced the effectiveness of the STICK. All in all....I was happy when I learned of an alternative that solved these problems. As others have explained, the HALOS system is composed of acrylic (ie. SEE THROUGH) blocks with recessed grooves and hook-and-loop tape. Teeny strips of hook tape go into the grooves on the block. Because the grooves provide a recessed area to apply the hook tape, this prevents any topography which would affect your stamped image....the little hookies stick out just far enough to 'grab' the loopies on the image itself. When you want to mount up some new ums...it's just SO EASY. You don't need to worry about cushion, since the loop tape will act as a cushion. The loop tape comes in large (oops...don't have the dimensions with me...but they are much larger than anything I could find in fabric stores AND the stick is 'industrial strength'') strips which are protected with a peel-off paper layer on the sticky side. Peel off this layer and start arranging ums on the sticky surface. I always trim up my ums first, but you don't have to do this. You can even put a sheet of rubber right ON the sticky side of the loop tape and start cutting. Pretrimming of the ums allows me to fit them together with less tape waste....but then I LIKE trimming rubber. I use Kai bonsai scissors (which are available from a number of vendors). I started with Fiskars Soft-Touch scissors, but the Kai scissors make a WORLD of difference. You need to coat the blades of the scissors with glycerine or embossing fluid to keep the stickiness from building up on the scissor blades. If you DO get sticky blades, a little WD40 will remove it. Anyway, I just start trimming close to the edge of the ums....making sure I don't undercut. That's all there is to it. I tried using some fabric store VELCRO....didn't work. The 'stick' isn't strong enough and the weight of the um can just pull the tape from the rubber. Worthless. NEGATIVE:Trimming the loop tape will generate little black fuzzies. These are easily brushed away and I avoid the problem by doing all my cutting at a little TV table removed from my stamping area. STORAGE: This is one of the biggest plusses of the HALOS system in my mind. I have all my images sorted by category and put into category binders. I can just grab the right binder, flip the pages and find the image I want in just seconds. No sorting through envelopes....no sorting through boxes, although that might work well for smaller collections. My binders are filled with plastic page protectors with a sturdy cover stock inside to provide rigidity. I have 1/4" strips of hook tape stuck to the outside of the page protector and cram as many images as I can onto one page....probably 20-30 depending on the image size. I don't index anything because I can recognize an image just by looking at the rubber side....but others may need more help. You can stamp the page protector if you want and even note the stamp company and any other information you might want to track. When I want to compose a scene or choose an image, I just grab my image file. I just stamp my images on paper as I receive/purchase them....as many on a 8 1/2 x 11" page as I can fit and this comprises my image filing system. My mounteds are stamped by category (all the fish with the fish, all the birds with the birds etc), and my ums are stamped by company name (as I feel it's my job to keep track and credit the images I use). I even take this with me to stamp stores to help me avoid repeat purchases . I know folks market systems for stamping your image file, but this works for me. Personally, I hate stamping with wood-mounted images now, because I'm spoiled by see-through acrylic blocks. One other negative I find with the HALOS acrylic block are the black strips of hook tape which can occlude your view of the image. I've worked around that and barely notice now....since there is so much 'clear' space to work with. Because I can SEE exactly where my image is THROUGH the acrylic block, I rarely (make that NEVER) use positioners....and I have 2 different positioners in my stamping drawer . Cling-vinyl systems: Another popular system for working with ums is the cling-vinyl system. I have not tried this system myself because I see too many negatives. Storage wouldn't work the way I want it to....I refuse to sort through envelopes ....and the cling-vinyl ums don't stick well to plastic page protectors. Some folks say that they use plastic pages with pockets....but I want to cram as many on a page as possible....and don't want to be sorting through ums stuck in a pocket. Also, I've heard in this cool, damp climate of the Pacific Northwest, the ums often curl up. They also need to be cleaned often or they lose their ability to stick as the vinyl accumulates skin oils etc. I'm too lazy for that. They also require cushion (or at least everyone that's described this system to me uses cushion). Remember, I have a large collection of ums so issues that are crucial for me may be insignificant to you....and others who have actually USED this system could describe it much more accurately. I get all my HALOS products from Sheryl Porter who is on this list. A number of other vendors also carry HALOS products. I write next to each scrap what it is glued down with. By the time I'm done with my cards, the glues are all dry and I can choose which one to use. I think I've used a different glue for every color card stock I've used! :) Hope this helps! If they do well and get good reviews (which I think they will), I will have more. You get 1/2 lb (this is a lot--if you look at the collage packs offered in stores they don't weigh much at all!) of decorative paper pieces, suitable for collage. Some of these have come from sample books and may have id tags on them--but even those would be cool in certain pieces and the majority of each piece is excellent for collage. Wide range of papers in each collection. $10 each pack--includes US shipping. Email to reserve yours. I will hold these for 2 weeks only, then if payment is not rec'd, I will offer them for sale again. Thanks! Mona Everett, 1314 Woodvale Drive, Madison, WI 53716. She sent some wonderful sample cards to our local RS store and I NEED to know how she did them. The ones I'm taking about used vellum and were dry embossed but I am pretty sure she used her stamps and not stencils for the images. How did she dry emboss the vellum? Could you find out and let me know? They are gorgeous! Thanks so much! Mac will have just as many problems with year 2000 as anyother kind of computer, because it the software that is running on the system that has the problems not the system. I wrote software back in the 1960's that will still run on the IBM Ssystem/360 after 2000 because I used a 4 digit date field. There is a LOT of MAC and PC software that does not use a 4 digit date field. If you have any software that displays the date as 97 or 98 instead of 1997 and 1998 you may have problems in the year 2000 with that software. IF that date field is used for sorting or selecting records from your database, you may/will get the wrong result. But a lot of software that uses a 2 digit date field will still work correctly. Just remember it is not the date in the computer that counts but the date that the program is processing. I have some questions for everyone to think about, what is the real advantage of a IBM compatable over a MAC? Currently, over 95% of the CDROMs producted run on a PC/less than 30% are dual mode and run on a MAC, and many of those like the ones I produce are dual mode but the function is less on the MAC, so the question here is what software did you buy the MAC to run that was not available on a PC? Will your next computer be the same kind? And what kind do you have now? Please email privately so the flames do not melt down the list? Thanks for your thoughts, as we are trying to figure out why we would invest $10's of thousands of dollars to develope and release MAC software for about 5-6% of the market?
