I'm sure I and the other vendors are pouring over your comments so we can each make our own decision on how to handle our advertisements in the future. One of the biggest things I've learned from this landslide of response is that there's no cut and dried answer. Some of you would like the ads to be curtailed to once or twice a week and have it be a hard and fast rule. Others like things just the way they are and would like even more comm's! Still others remind us that this is an UNmoderated list and that we need to use our delete key. But no, I'm sitting here surrounded by sooty images! But the wick needs to be trimmed to get a better flame, so I had to stop for now. Zonia and I had used candles, but some definitely provide a better flame - - bigger is better since it works faster. And with too low of a flame I'm more likely to get wax on the paper - messes up the image, but can make it interesting, too. I couldn't get a good flame going and then the candle burned down too low and I couldn't reach the flame without getting wax on the paper. So I looked around to find a better flame. Aha, an oil hurricane lamp! Take the chimney off and the flame can be adjusted much more precisely than a candle. And the broad wick makes a broad flame. The paper has to actually touch the flame to get a good buildup of soot. The middle of the paper is easier to do since the edges catch fire easily - have some water close by! So I started making bigger pieces - half sheet rather than quarter sheet, so there is a larger middle area. Zonia and I had tried colored glossy, as well as white glossy. So I decided to try brayered glossy - definitely fun! Works just as well and lots of variey available. The soot can be manipulated somewhat, so that it looks like black clouds in a blue or gray sky, so that it completely covers all the middle part thickly, or very thinly and in patches. I find it fascinating to watch it cover with black. Holding the paper horizontally into the flame and moving slowly produces a heavy buildup. Tilting the paper upward lets the soot travel faster and in patterns. Tilting it too far increases the risk of paper burning. It helps to have the flame high enough that you can watch the paper closely as it's done and control it better. It's lots of fun trying to decide how well an image will work. Really finely detailed can be wonderful, but so can outline and bold stamps. Appelachian Arts cat face stamp is great, so several of the CCCC people will get samples of this. Red Castle's pen&ink fish works great, too. Other images are merely disappointing. When that happens, more soot can be done over the image, which will still show faintly and then something stamped over that - I need to experiment more with that to see if I can make something good, rather than just strange. These definitely need to be sprayed to seal them. One thing Zonia noticed before is that it helps to spray lightly from farther away and then closer to the paper, since the soot may shift causing speckles on that sheet or another close by. Now I need to get these sprayed and get myself off to bed for a bit of sleep before I go to work later today. I'd love to hear what anyone else has tried and what works well and what doesn't.
