I have not seen Ms. Hanson post to this list for a mighty long time and she does *not* return my emails. Swap Participants beware...IMHO she was not a good swap hostess. >> As a swap hostess, I'd like to respond to this. I do answer e-mails, but unfortunately I can't control the post office when a swap is to be returned :-( I know that I had an Aussie participate in a swap of mine .. and it took I think almost 2 months (maybe even longer) for her to receive her cards. The whole time I responded to her, but I felt so terrible that she hadn't received the cards. I've also had several instances (recently even) where I never received the swapper's cards. I don't post everytime I receive cards, but if you ask me if I got it, I can tell you what day I received it. I even post that to the list when I update my swaps. Being a swap hostess is not always easy; but I love it ! I've had discussions with some of the other "regular" hostesses about things like this (lost mail) and its just part of the risk we take using our oh-so-not- trustworthy Post Office. I always tell someone that they can send their package to me priority ($3 US) and include the same for the return (another $3 US) and they will always be guaranteed to get it back. Of course ... I guess that's not entirely true either ... since again, you have to use the P.O. As far as returning e-mails ... sometimes I can't check my mail for 3 days -- which to someone who has sent you a letter could be 4-5. Although, if you check the status of the mail you send me, it will say "mail read" -- actually my computer opens my mail and saves it to my hard drive. I do this so the mailbox won't get full. But I will always return an email if a reply is necessary. (telling me your cards are "in the mail" does not constitute a return email; but asking a question does). Try giving the receipient several days (up to 7) to respond to an e-mail before sending another. Remember, some people also travel, could be out of town, or just are very busy. After 3 unsuccessful tries ... post a question to the list like "Looking for xxxxx" and in the text of the message simply say "could someone please have xxxxx contact me" and leave it at that. Frankly, its nobody's business why you need that person. I hate to see "trashing" of names on the list. Lord knows I've got a list of 10 people I should never let enter a swap of mine again because they don't know how to follow directions. But you'll never hear me mention their names. And the # of hostesses I feel didn't live up to my expectations. But you'll never hear me mention their names. My mommie said -- If you can't say something nice ... don't say it at all. Just my 2 pennies worth of "whatever" ... A few years = ago I was working with sealing wax--the stick with a wick kind, not the = wafers. I had a real problem with little bits of soot all over everything. = My sister has this problem also when she burns her oil lamps when the = wicks aren't trimmed. I am not a fanatic about housecleaning or anything, = but this stuff was all over everything, things I never dreamed I'd have to = clean! What has your experience with the deliberate introduction of soot as it = relates to things other than your cards? Leslie "Finger Print-cess" >>> Karen N Glover 02/13/98 03:44am >>> As I said in my last post on soot stamping, this can be a bit addictive - I SHOULD be in bed, asleep, so I'll be all refreshed for work tomorrow, actually not too much later today! But no, I'm sitting here surrounded by sooty images! But the wick needs to be trimmed to get a better flame, so I had to stop for now. Zonia and I had used candles, but some definitely provide a better flame - - bigger is better since it works faster. And with too low of a flame I'm more likely to get wax on the paper - messes up the image, but can make it interesting, too. I couldn't get a good flame going and then the candle burned down too low and I couldn't reach the flame without getting wax on the paper. So I looked around to find a better flame. Aha, an oil hurricane lamp! Take the chimney off and the flame can be adjusted much more precisely than a candle. And the broad wick makes a broad flame. The paper has to actually touch the flame to get a good buildup of soot. The middle of the paper is easier to do since the edges catch fire easily - have some water close by! So I started making bigger pieces - half sheet rather than quarter sheet, so there is a larger middle area. Zonia and I had tried colored glossy, as well as white glossy. So I decided to try brayered glossy - definitely fun! Works just as well and lots of variey available. The soot can be manipulated somewhat, so that it looks like black clouds in a blue or gray sky, so that it=20 completely covers all the middle part thickly, or very thinly and in patches. I find it fascinating to watch it cover with black. Holding the paper horizontally into the flame and moving slowly produces a heavy buildup. Tilting the paper upward lets the soot travel faster and in patterns. Tilting it too far increases the risk of paper burning. It helps to have the flame high enough that you can watch the paper closely as it's done and control it better. It's lots of fun trying to decide how well an image will work. Really finely detailed can be wonderful, but so can outline and bold stamps. Appelachian Arts cat face stamp is great, so several of the CCCC people will get samples of this. Red Castle's pen&ink fish works great, too. Other images are merely disappointing. When that happens, more soot can be done over the image, which will still show faintly and then something stamped over that - I need to experiment more with that to see if I can make something good, rather than just strange. These definitely need to be sprayed to seal them. One thing Zonia noticed before is that it helps to spray lightly from farther away and then closer to the paper, since the soot may shift causing speckles on that sheet or another close by. Now I need to get these sprayed and get myself off to bed for a bit of sleep before I go to work later today. I'd love to hear what anyone else has tried and what works well and what doesn't. Hi, I borrowed a Eurosealer from a friend to do a water card with. It didn't work out too well for me. It cuts the plastic right at the edge with no excess plastic on the edges. Initially it looked ok, but I kept manipulated the packets, and the next morning 1 or 3 had a slow leak. Tried it again, just tossing them around and putting some weight (books) on them to see if they would hold up in the mail and 1 of 5 leaked. Not really sure why they leaked, suspected it was that they were cut right to the edge of the plastic, but I am not sure. So that was my experience. Becky-Bear got it for me at a convention here in Colorado last summer, so either they just bring them out at the conventions, or it's in a supplement I don't have. Anyway, you can email them and inquire about them (I think they had four different ones, all very large) Their email addy is pacover@roadrunner.com Hope this helps!! (Everyone should check out their catalog, it's beautiful!!) The more nicknames I see for people, the more I want one. >Anyone have any creative ideas for me to use? ****************** When I started stamping (in '92?) I used the name Rubber Ducky for various reasons. That stuck for quite awhile, but one day someone wanted me to sign a card I'd made for her. I didn't want to sign my full name and "Rubber Ducky" was much too "cute" to use as a signature on this pretty piece, so I pulled elements out of first and last names and became "jorga". I've chosen it as a username on two different providers and it works well. Some cyber friends who have become face-to-face friends use it instead of my name. I recommend that to you and therefore vote for : Nelri jorga This message was from jorga - -- The rubberstampers mailing list is proudly sponsored by the Dueling Modems Arts & Crafts Forum.
