I'm glad to hear that our Floridian members weren't affected by last night's tornadoes! I called my folks who live in Clearwater to check on them, & they're fine, but my Papa is bored to tears!!! You see, he had a stroke last month, & altho he's doing ok, he still has some dizzy spells & blurry vision. My sister & I were lamenting about them being so far away that we can't help them, & take them places (My Dad realizes that he shouldn't drive while he's still somewhat impaired, & he's been REALLY GOOD about that). We were discussing the availability of transportation & senior services HERE, & we were wondering if such services are available THERE. I was hoping that some of you Floridians might know what services are available there & I'd really appreciate it if you could point me in the direction of websites or phone numbers so that I could look into getting my Dad out of the house & active again!!! Also, if anyone has some ideas of hobbies & such that don't require sharp vision, I'd appreciate any suggestions! By the way, my Dad DOES websurf, but he can't do much of that, either because of his blurry vision. Thanks, gang - I really appreciate any suggestions you might have! - -Kitty This message was from Kitty - -- The rubberstampers mailing list is proudly sponsored by the Dueling Modems Arts & Crafts Forum. Date: Mon, 23 Feb 1998 02:21:09 EST I spent seven years working for Washington States Department of Corrections. I can verify alot of this information. Yes inmates DO operate telemarketing operations for several different companies, and just like in the real world they get paid at least minimum wage plus commission on sales, here it is only conducted through our womens prison. Also inmates "run" everything from tool shops, warehouses and lets not forget the fire crews, yes fire crews sometimes even out of state our prisoners are sent. These crews are sent out with minimal supervision and are paid of course and have the Benefit of being treated like the other fire crews. These crews are called the DNR(Department of Natural Resourse) crews. We also have the warehouse crews and the asbestos crews that work in all of the state government buildings again with minimual supervision, to include schools. Most of the time the people they are working around have no idea these are inmates because they are not usually required to wear their prison ID, because it might scare someone. OH here is the one I couldn't belive, were I worked we had groups that played in the county baseball teams ya know your local bar- n-grill team playing against a bunch of inmates and of course they didn't know they were inmates either!!! by-Bye~BUY Denise(Meridee's BudDee) QVC4me@aol.com - --------- End forwarded message ---------- _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Point your web browser at http://crafts.dm.net/ . - - ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Feb 1998 10:22:11 -0600 From: Phil Schloss Subject: RS: Abbreviations in email--and all the other junk also. Has anyone thought about just using the words instead of the abbreviations. The more abbreviations the harder it is to read. I think it is funny that people use abbreviations to reduce the size of messages and then send them in html or add a graphic that is many times the size of the orginal message. I don't want to have to have my secret decoder dictionary in order to read a message. I find that with 700+ messages a day, if it is not VERY EASY to read it is gone. If you run a program that tells you the clarity of your message against a message with a lot of abbreviations, it will come out very poorly. The idea of email (any communication) is to get your idea across to another person (thing) with the least effort. In the case of a email group where there are 500+ people trying to read it with at least 5 or 6 differnt operating systems and likely 30 or 40 different email readers, it would seem to me that if the writer spends a second to not use an abbreviation, than the 500+ readers will save many times that when they read it. The same is true of the fancy colors, font sizes, font types and attached graphics, they may look nice to the sender but unless you have tested them with how they look on all of the different systems and email reading programs, your message is likely being dumped unread by a lot of people. Many people have their email set to not processe and email with an attachment. Others if your email is not plain text and easy to read will just filter all of your messages to the trash. Or if they don't like your posts they may also do that, like an order I received a while back, the person said she had not seen my orginal post, that a friend of hers had forwarded it to her. She filtered all of my messages to trash because of my comments on copyright. So you can see, if you want it read keep it simple. I will be making another trip to Portland on Saturday, March 7th. That means I can get more PETAL PAPER for those of you who missed out last time (or if you want more!) WHAT IS IT? This is 9 pt. cardstock and matching text weight paper with REAL flower petals. The base color of the cardstock/paper is a soft white, and the dried flower petals are mostly pinks, blues, and mauves. There are 2 types... each available in cardstock weight AND text weight. Both are smooth finish (no bumps) so you can stamp, or write on them with ease. #1 - "Lots of Petals" - this one has lots of tiny petals throughout, the petals are more broken up, and denser... #2 - "Sparce Petals" - this one has fewer petals, and they are more spread out.... not such a heavy feeling..., but the petals are bigger and more colorful. HOW MUCH IS IT? "Lots of Petals" in CARDSTOCK WEIGHT - 10 sheets/$7.50 "Lots of Petals" in TEXT WEIGHT paper - 10 sheets/$3.50 "Sparce Petals" in CARDSTOCK WEIGHT - 10 sheets/$7.50 "Sparce Petals" in TEXT WEIGHT paper - 10 sheets/$3.50 BONUS - Order 1 package of each and receive 10 sheets of Royal Fiber Periwinkle, which compliments the colors in the petals so well!! **FREE!!!! :-) US Shipping: $3 for up to 100 sheets Foreign shipping: Please ask WHEN WILL I SHIP? I will be shipping these on Monday March 9th. I would like most of the monies to be here before I go pick these up (these are quite pricey, so I will only be buying what I have orders for.) Please e-mail me to reserve yours and I will send confirmation. Send check or MO to Fran Robertshaw, 2682 Beverly Dr., Medford, OR 97504.
