I just love that you're so ...... opinionated .... makes me feel less ..... different !! ;) OK ... Canadian weather .... hey - the country stretches from sea to shining sea ... and you'd see the same diversity in our climatic conditions as you would from Maine to California. Here on the east coast, we were lucky not have experienced the devastation that Lissa mentioned. ...we had lots of lovely snow - great skiing and snowmobiling conditions - hopitality is great ... we refer to winter as the "White Gold Rush", because the vast areas of wilderness, together with the 400 cm. (approx 160) inches of annual snowfall bring an influx of tourism during the winter season. The 9,000 km. of groomed snowmobile trails see lots of traffic, and the snowmobile industry is now a large part of New Brunswick's economy. The "White Gold Rush" is not a joke, either ... the phrase is used on our winter tourism literature. So, Lissa ... if it gets too bad ... come East!! Ant Judy H. I asked her whether I should mention this on 'rubberstampers' and she gave me the go-ahead. I've been involved in 2 of these projects and find them a great way to convert some of the drawings I have which are too teeny and detailed for me to carve into rubber AND which are typically not images I'd want to add to MY company catalog. The last project was BIRDS and I did several albatross and sooty shearwater silhouettes (for my International Year of the Ocean work). She puts together a 9.5 x 7" sheet of red rubber for $15 ($3 of which is the Priority Mail charge) out of the art sent in by those who 'buy' a share of the 'space'. I've gotten great stuff! Just a note: the folks contributing art to these sheets usually do art of the realistic-stylistic-ethnic flavor....rather than cute or bizarre, so art in that vein is best accepted. DK will probably try to pull together the most cohesive/relevant mix of images of those offered, since the space is limited. You can also buy the sheet without sending in art, but it's a one-time pressing. She MUST know how many sheets to request when the art is sent to be set-up....as that's the last chance for this rubber. It's always a surprise....we don't know what the other artists are doing ...until we get the sheet. You can moniter the sara-L archives if you are not a member of sara-L (number of subscribers is limited and the posts are focused....ONLY rubber talk): http://206.241.12.9/archives/sara-l.html The current project is Postoids and Cancellations which is due in early March. Generally on most homeowner's policies you have at least 50% of the amount that you insure your house for to use for contents. For example, if you have insured your house to $200,000 you would have an additional $100,000 that could be used for contents if you were to have a total loss (fire, tornado, etc). This is the general situation on an actual cash value policy. However, many policies today are insured to replacement cost (does NOT necessarily mean you would get what it cost to replace your house--but that's a different topic for a different time). Replacement cost policies typically allow more coverage on contents than an ACV policy would (you pay more too). But many times, you may have 70% on your contents instead of the 50%. You should all check your policies to see what you have. NOW, let's say you do have a total fire. The company will come in, adjust the loss, determine if your house was worth what you had it insured for. THEN they will ask for you to give them a list of all your contents. From that list they will determine the value of what you had. You will be paid UP TO either the 50% or the 70% or whatever your policy limits are. I know that sounds like a lot of money available for contents, but really it often isn't. Just look around your homes and think what it would cost you to replace everything you have---your dishes, your pots and pans, your clothes, your books, your music, etc etc. NOW, think how much money you have tied up in rubberstamps. Especially those of you whose collections number in the thousands. This is probably not a subject you really want to discuss with your husband , but somewhere you need to have a list of exactly what stamps you own. Insurance companies do not like insureds who say "Oh, I had about 4000 stamps and they were each worth $10.00 so you owe me $40, 000 in insurance money." They will want a list of each stamp. This is one of the most important things you can do--make a list and keep it somewhere. Maybe not someplace readily available to your DH, but someplace where you can retrieve it in case of emergency. Also, think seriously of how that total stamp dollar figure relates to the total insurance you have on contents on your house. If, indeed, you are one of the people with a $40,000 collection, you really badly need to talk with your insurance representative and get his/her suggestions for adequate coverage. One other thing I might mention here......many people do not realize that a homeowner's policy does not cover flood. This can only be purchased from the Federal Government. So if you are in an area where you could be flooded, you should also talk to your agent about flood insurance. There's lots of people who are victims of El Nino this year, who are finding this out the hard way. Hope this helps. I'd noticed the direct coloring techniques that ColorBox is currently pushing in RSM and thought I'd try that. I had a bunch of Mead Marc V which I don't use for anything else (it's glossy paper which I hate to brayer on....it 'grabs' the ink color too quickly and it's too difficult for me to get seamless backgrounds) which I decided to use as the base. I trimmed the edges using the Fiskars hand-held rotary cutter with deckle blade and brayered some caramel Adironcack ink over it....to give a splotchy background color. I used a big metallic copper ColorBox pad, an earthtone ColorBox rainbow option pad (long, thin, removable color strips), catseyes and color cubes....all different shapes. I used metallic copper and a bunch of earthtones including cocoa, terra cotta...and just randomly blotched them all over the paper. I then used Aglaia's kettle copper EP and sprinkled it here and there for a random, splotchy effect and heated the powder. I dipped the whole card into a clear EP to 'catch' any other 'wet' areas and melted that powder. This gave me a very surrelistic background in earthy tones. Adhered this to a black cover stock which I'd sponged copper metallic ColorBox onto. Brayered some caramel Adirondack onto Wausau Papers Exact Coated Matte (for a splotchy look) and stamped my carved Celtic otter-chasing-a-fish in black Marvy Matchable. Tore this into a rough oval, glued it to black text weight paper and tore that into a rough oval and adhered it to the base card. I really liked the look! I'll have to try it with some of my African and Mexican ancient icons/masks!!! Pretty quick card too....I could probably put this in my 5 minute or less collection! Though there are similar take-offs being passed around email these days, this original version is attributed to Mark Twain (1835-1910). Try reading it out loud if you have a problem getting through it! ~~~ A Plan for the Improvement of English ~~~ ...For example, in Year 1 that useless letter "c" would be dropped to be replaced by either "k" or "s", and likewise "x" would no longer be part of the alphabet. The only kase in which "c" would be retained would be the "ch" formation, which will be dealt with later. Year 2 might reform "w" spelling, so that "which" and "one" would take the same konsonant, while Year 3 might well abolish "y", replacing it with "i", and Iear 4 might fiks the "g/j" anomali wonse and for all. Jenerally, then, the improvement would kontinue iear bai iear with Iear 5 doing awai with useless double konsonants, and Iear 6-12 or so modifaiing vowlz and the remeining voist and unvoist konsonants. I know we aren't supposed to tell what we got until March 7th, but this is different. I want everyone to know what you sent. This was the sweetest thing. Laura sent Caroline (my daughter) a cute stuffed pink elephant. It had the addy attached with ribbon around it's collar. My mail carrier had put it in a clear plastic bag, but she only did so to insure it wouldn't get dirty if she had to leave it on our porch. You have touched me with this gift. Caroline just loves it. She has carried it everywhere. When the nurse was messing with her IV a little while ago, she held onto it for dear life. It had arrived only a few minutes before. She is asleep in my grandmother's arms holding the elephant now. It is so nice to know that so many of you are praying for her and/or sending warm, fuzzy thoughts. Thank you so much. I love you all.
