Debbie ------------------------------ From: Janet Detter Margul Date: Fri, 07 Feb 1997 01:09:50 -0600 Subject: Secret Stamper and deadbeats Things too quiet? Too much content, not enough flames? Well, the Voice of Prozac is extremely irritated. But. Just for the record. And for people who are new and may think about signing up for this or any other swap... All swap hosts make their own rules. If they want to exclude someone, for whatever reason, nobody (at least nobody they have to listen to) can tell them different. Flip side is people can choose to include all sign ons if they want. Well, the Secret Stamper Swap is OUR swap. Mine and Frank's. And we choose to let anybody play who wants to. Let me tell you, if there's a deadbeat cell in your body, playing in the SS will quickly bring it out, sometime over the course of six months. We see the absolute worst in everybody. If we listened to the two people telling us how to run this swap (one new this round, the other never participating at all), we'd ban anybody who was a day late sending, anyone who had their package eaten by the post office, anybody whose ISP was acting up and couldn't post a thanks, or sent a post that never arrived... banned forever. Period. Amen. Be glad, VERY GLAD that it is our swap. Out of about 140 players in January, approximately 50 didn't have packages in hands at the end of the month. For various reasons. At least two of the players are people who have had problems fulfilling commitments in the past. Funny thing, though, THEY weren't late last month. When someone screws up, it is my belief they deserve a chance and an enabling to regain trust. The Secret Stamper Swap is a perfect place to do it, too. IF those telling us how to run our swap had ever participated before, they would know just how closely we track who is receiving what. They would likely have, at least once, gotten one of our famous dun letters. We send them every month to both sides of an unacknowledged package (since we don't know if the package wasn't sent, or wasn't acknowledged). But we give grace. Usually a month. Sometimes more if the SS player in question is communicating with us and we feel they're likely to make good. We have angel senders who will fill in those gaps and we do use them. We don't have a perfect system. Sometimes people DO fall through the cracks and we know that. But we feel it is plenty good enough to justify us showing faith in each and every one of you who wants to play. We will admit to matching those with multiple problems from a previous round together... and admit to tracking those with known problems in the past a little more carefully than perhaps other players. But dammit, everybody can play and we show faith in each and every one of you. And keep that faith probably longer than anybody else would. And YES. Deadbeats from previous rounds DO play again. They may be on a kind of probation, since we're watching them closer, but they aren't treated that way, they surely don't know it, and we're not into labeling anybody or passing judgement on people's excuses or playing mini-SS-gods deciding who can and can't play. I guarantee the ones who send packages late would NOT be the first ones cut out. I don't like anybody, deadbeat or not, deserved or not, being trashed on this list. This may be where I draw some sort of moderation line. I do agree there should be a way for people to know if someone they are thinking about dealing with is reliable or not. I would strongly suggest posting and saying "I'm thinking about dealing with xxxx, anyone with recommendations please send me private e-mail." NO MORE TRASHING PEOPLE ON THIS LIST. And no, I'm not going to say "no more non-participants in the SS swap tell us how to run our swap." You can do that if you want. I am truly NOT into moderating anything. They don't pay me enough for that shit. (Newbies. They don't pay me at all. Just in case you're wondering.) BUT NO MORE TRASHING ANYBODY ON THIS LIST. I mean that. Big time. NO MORE. You all want to run some sort of BBB on list members, you can do that, but I don't want to see any of it in public. Even the BBB guarantees confidentiality and has many checks before they'll put someone on the bad list. And I see this list running on gossip, rumors and innuendo and I don't want to see this shit any more. And this time it is more than my opinion because I do have the power to make it so. NO MORE TRASHING PEOPLE ON THIS LIST. I know I'm only talking about (as I remember) three people out of all the posting today. But that's three too many and if it continues it will be three less people around here tomorrow. This is as mad as I get and I don't intend to stay mad or ever get this mad at this list ever again.
