One of the hidden faults of a used vulcanizer is uneven heating. You wouldn't know this without a pyrometer. If you can borrow one, then bring the machine to temperature, about 307-310 degress F. Read the temp in nine places: left-rear, center-rear, right-rear, etc. Gum rubber is pretty lenient with temperatures. You can vulcanize anywhere between about 302-312 degrees. So, if the variation is plus or minus 5 degrees and you set it to 307, you'll be good. If the variation is more than that, you can still use it for smaller plates but the larger ones will be unevening vulcanized. Also look to see that the platens close evenly together. This can often be adjusted where the uneven temperature problem can't be, but get it adjusted before you buy. The machine could have a bent frame. (yes, some people have found ways to drop these things!). - --Chris McEwen reply to: Socrates Press socrates@sprintmail.com - -----Original Message----- From: Tracy K May Subject: RS: Used vulcanizer-- good deal?? >A friend of mine wants to know what she should ask before buying a used >vulcanizer. Beyond that message, I'd add that a 5x7 unit is rather small. You need to leave about 1/2" around all sides, so that unit will do a plate of 4x6. That would be probably be fine for hobbyist use. The price, if the unit is in good condition, is not bad. Used vulcanizers are hard to find so you may get one for nearly nothing if you can wait two to three hundred years and are in the right place at the right time. - --Chris McEwen reply to: Socrates Press socrates@sprintmail.com - -----Original Message----- From: teresa o durn Subject: RS: RS Vulcanizer Question >I have an opportunity to purchase a reconditioned vulcanizer that is >still in the crate unused. This is true only as long as the other company does not have or has not applied for a Registered trademark of the name from the US Patent and Trademark Office. Some states apparently have something set up that allows a business to register the name of the business in the same manner, in which case, you would not be able to legally have the same type of business in that state with the name that is already registered. In either case, I would never name a business the same as one in another part of the country, especially in these times when people shop electronically all over the country. If the other business that has the same name starts to run their business poorly, you will be assumed to be associated and will suffer from loss of business. The Berne Convention, of which the US is a signatory, established that ownership to intellectual property by its creator is automatically established at its creation and only a specific act, such as signing a sales contract, can release it. The only exception that I know of is "work-for-hire." This is where an employee is paid to create something. US courts have established that the term "work-for-hire" must exist in a written agreement between employee and employer along with a description of the work to be created. Some US courts have gone further to say that a post-dated agreement is not valid; the contract has to have been executed prior to the creation of the work.
