I belong to two lists: rubberstampers and calligraphers. Each has their own "style", and I enjoy immensely the honor of being up close and personal to so many greats of both art forms. I also appreciate the random joke, because life's too short, really. But when it came to the ebonics "thing" (and, I am ashamed to say I let it slide and did not immediately speak out), I was offended. This list is bigger than what was blatently racist and the kind of sentiment I put right up there with teenagers' bathroom 'humor'. May we please put all this, including OJ (my gawd! I am SO SICK of that trial x2!!!), behind us and return to our regularly scheduled program: rubberstamping?! However, something _so_ off-beat from my main interests and _so_ blatently offensive needs to be privately e-mailed to those who appreciate it. I, for one, do not; and, I for one, would like to now return, without OJ and all this ebonics baggage, to our regularly scheduled program: rubber stamping. ------------------------------ From: "jodi hansen" Date: Sat, 8 Feb 1997 15:38:09 -0700 Subject: Re: new to the rubber stampers list Hi all, I have heard about this list for some time and have been anxiously awaiting to get on. I kept trying but it said it didn't work, thanks to sheryl's help I finally got on. I have been stamping for a while and like getting new ideas. I have been to two swaps and really like going to them. I have heard that you do swaps on this list and would appreciate any ideas on how to get on them. This last year I have lost two children, one stillbirth and one miscarriage and that was after 8 years of infertility. Stamping this year has really helped me pull through. I am not working outside of the home right now because we are trying again and know I will be on complete bedrest the whole pregnancy. So this list sounds like the perfect thing for me, I can do most things right here from home. I also have been told that you have secret stampers and would be interested in getting on to that as well. I think service is what pulls us through right.:) Thanks for any ideas. I thought I would post one idea I have recently learned that I LOVE. After coloring your stamp with the different colors, if you take a spray bottle that gives a really soft mist and spray over the top of it, almost having the water fall onto it rather than spraying at it, you can get many more images than just one. What I do is color my stamp, then blow and press down for one image, then I usually blow and get a second image, then I spray for usually 3-6 more times until the image doesn't show any more. This means you can get about 5-10 images from coloring it once. Also the water makes it look more like a water color as you go. You will find many different images. First, when driving into our driveway, I notice a box on the doorstep. Had my husband retreive it for me. He came back with a befuddled expression on his face. He said I had two packages from Nasco. I have a backorder with them but couldn't figure out why they would need such a big box for some "bug" paper and a Rabbet cutter. We had just come back from Costco, so I didn't look at it right away - had to get that frozen stuff in the freezer! Then, Rocco says something about one of the being addressed to Daybreak. Well, then I knew! It seems like I just got a package from you. You certainly are organized and on top of everything. I'm so glad I had already sent my SS a package for February - I would have felt very guilty if I hadn't. I know, I do guilt well. So, thank you ever so much SS. The first thing I see when I opened this box was more 3D illusion paper/vinyl! And this one was a BIG sheet! Now I don't feel like I have to hoard it. I just love this stuff. As usual, my SS has taken the time to wrap almost everything! Some were wrapped in hand stamped valentines paper and others in valentines tissue paper, which she gave me 4 sheets of. I am a collector of tissue paper and I hadn't even seen this one before. Thank you SS. Ok, let's see, I got a hand stamped card wishing me a Happy Valentines Day! Here is what else I got (it's a long list so grab a coke or coffee or whatever and sit back and become green (oops that's next month isn't it) with envy: Valentine Collage package from Turtle Press - Lots of neat stuff for collaging a sheet of the loop portion from HALOS, since I'm in the process of converting all my unmounteds to this method, one can never have too many! Three unmounted stamps: "Happy Valentines Day" from Happy Rubber Stamps "I need/want a stamp" from Rubberstilzkin An ice skating penquin from Evolving Images What was very thoughtful of you to do was to let me know where these stamps come from - thank you! Let's see, four stamps that were mounted: A large frame with stamps all around it from When the Rubber Hits the Road. A small solid heart from Hero Arts The flame tonal from Stampscapes - one of my favorite companies and a stamp I didn't have. A large heart that has space in the middle for a saying, a cutout or picture from Ad Lib My SS also gave me the gold and silver hybrid pens - if you haven't tried them, they are great - am almost out of the silver and am so glad I got another one. A peony color cube - One of my favs. This package had a note attached saying "This one definately had your name on it. Enjoy" Guess what it was - A "Daybreak" rainbow ink pad from Alice in Rubberland Last but definatelynot least, my SS made this origami box that flattens into an envelope. Inside was a pin. It was a letter "sealed" with a small red heart. I can't thank you enough for everything. Your thoughtfulness and time spent to hand pick items you know I would like is beyond words. (Ask anybody - that takes some doing). Oh yeah, almost forgot. Later when the mail came I got a postcard from my ss saying "Having a wonderful time, Wish you were here. Me too, think we'd get along just fine! I hope you also have a wonderful Valentines Day. The advantages of doing so are obvious--being able to find out if packages have arrived safely, acknowledging gifts, letting them know if you're having problems and will be late, etc. and just being able to "chat" and get to know each other. She has shared the directions for how to do this on Juno, and I'm sure the rest of you computer whiz people will be able to figure out how to do something similar with other services. Here's the way she does it, and if it doesn't make sense, I'll ask her more specific questions. It doesn't make any sense to me because I don't have Juno, and I don't have a SS or a need to send anything anonymously, and I am totally computer illiterate. Here are her instructions: Set up a new account for your SS alias. When the welcome screen comes up and has screen name and asks for your password, it also asks if you want to set up a new account. All you have to do is double click onto that icon and answer the questions. Then when you want to sign on as that alias, click onto the arrow next to your regular screen name and the other account names will come up and you just click onto the one you want. Hope some of you find this easier and faster than using a go-between. Wish I could tell you who suggested this, but then her SS would know who she is. I enjoy spotting wild life as I drive along it, mainly hawks, other birds, deer, and the occasional fox. Yesterday evening, my husband was napping in the seat beside me as I was driving up the road at dusk, with the winter sun long since obscured by the hills. I looked at the hills to the south, and my first thought was that the rancher had turned out a herd of about a dozen horses, in place of the cattle I expected to see. Then I realized that I was looking at an elk herd. An Air Force Academy colonel had told us at a neighborhood meeting that a small herd had established itself in the north part of the Academy, but it was still incredibly exciting to see elk on this hillside, as I had only previously seen them in parks and reserves up in the mountains. They are magnificent creatures. Jack was grumpy that I woke him up to see them, but we were almost home anyway. Gee, elk, practically in my back yard. Of course, if I was a gardener, I wouldn't be nearly that excited, since they are even better than deer at trashing plantings. Anybody know of a good elk stamp? Only mine were already printed on one side--so I stuck a gold sticker that was bigger than the pog on the back to cover the printing, stamped on the other side, and dipped the whole thing in ultra fine glitter, which adhered to the adhesive that was exposed beyong the edge of the pog. We used hot glue for the pin backs and they've stayed on great! If anyone would like any of these (but they do have one side printed) let me know and I can tuck them in with orders or will send them to you if you send a SAML and as much postage as you want pogs. I'll just put them on the scale and put as many in as the postage you send allows. I also still have lots of masking plastic, but haven't heard anyone say if they've used it or what they think of it for masking. My addy is on the snail mail list--if you don't have one, just reply and I'll send it out. BTW, I have two cases of those pogs with printing on one side. They do make sturdy pins with no lamination required. I rode a friend's horse instead, and afterward hit Simple Pleasures, a local stamp store, for a little retail therapy. You know, stamps may not have as much personality as horses, but they rarely damage themselves. Cathy (prop.) had tons of new stuff, including a largely expanded southwestern line. I saw a new-to-me company called Ink Blocks, that has some great scenery and horse related stamps. I bought one of a stylized horse head, in which a feather completes a circular seal. Gorgeous stamp. There was another silhouette stamp by the same company of horses running on a desert mountainside. Despite a very well executed model using the stamp, I regretfully decided not to buy it, since it had big expanses of flat rubber and I loathe dealing with big expanses of flat rubber. She also had a display of the new Stampendous Etchling line. Evidently you are supposed to buy the stencils in pairs, so you don't have to use a back light. I use a flourescent strip light and a translucent glass carving board, so I only bought one. I also bought one of the companion stamps that "fits" inside of the stencil. Haven't tried the system yet, but it looks as though it will make a no-brainer type card that can be sent to anyone, when you just want to color something in without having to make a whole lot of decisions. Fortunately, Cathy is having her %20 off annual sale in two weeks, because I saw lots of things that I NEED, including McGraw's book.
