I thought Jenn Dunigan's question about catalogs was a valid one. Many of us are used to getting a million and one catalogs (J. Crew, etc.) in the mail for free (in fact, I would pay J. Crew NOT to send me any more catalogs!) So we start out being used to the idea of catalogs for free. And seen from one angle, catalogs are a form of advertisement, which --while expensive to produce -- is usually not paid for by the customer. Now, some vendors have explained why in this industry and in this channel of the industry it isn't always economically feasible to send free catalogs. The explanations make sense to me, and they may have clarified things for a number of us on the list, including Jenn. But I don't think anyone should be jumped on for *asking*. It was a good question. Sending out good vibes, Mandy :-) This message was from ArtisanAJ - -- The rubberstampers mailing list is proudly sponsored by the Dueling Modems Arts & Crafts Forum. And also once again - - - I said that if you were NOT placing an order, THEN I can see paying for the catalog because you are right - - you can't be guaranteed that someone will place an order. I said only IF and WHEN you actually DO place an order, then I feel you should get a catalog (for future purchases) FREE. I'm NOT trying to be rude so I hope you don't take my message that way. I'm just trying to get my feelings across without being misunderstood by so many different people!! Jenn << Our prices are already discounted, we cannot afford to give away catalogs. I don't get them free, I have to pay for them. If I gave them away, I would loose money. Not only that, but what would guarantee me the people who received the free catalogs would order from me? If I decided to give them away, I would be flooded with request I'm sure. There would be no way I could continue to give the discounts, as I would have to make up for the free catalogs some where along the line. For us, it's just not an option. I appreciate it. It suddenly clicked in my mind that Andrea was talking about regular *jump rings*. I was thinking about the teeny, tiny rings that are about the size of jump rings, but are made like key rings. You know, the kind that are double wires that you have to somehow spread apart, then insert your object, then move along in a spiral motion until it reaches past both wires and finally the wires spring back together -- just like when you're putting a key onto a key ring. I had those in my mind probably because of the spiral motion that is similar to the spiral wire binding on the little books and also because they're much sturdier than regular jump rings that you twist open with a pair of pliers and a jump ring holder. Anyway, does anyone know a trick to using the miniature teeny, tiny rings that are constructed like key rings? Just imagine trying to open a key ring about the size of a jump ring. How would you go about doing it? On the front of the envy is a little angel, with wings, and so cute! The back of the envy is SWALCAKWS (Sealed with a lick 'cus a Kiss won't stick). Now, I like that!! And another stamp that is hard to make out because the Post off ice decided it needed to be cancelled, also. (funny one!) The card has a very nice angel, I think is from....what is that name...is it Paper Garden? It is layered on mulberry (I think). And the inside says "Touch the heart of others, as Angels do". Thanks somuch for the lift. It really helped to have such a wonderful mail day!! I'll e-mail you about your note. :) Thanks again. I live in Europe, and for me to order a catalog by mail sometimes cost more than double. it can easily be included in your order, mostly without any extra postage costs. I think there is some people that do this, because I got one from Stampin Up when I ordered from some Patti Gress and is also waiting for one that Barbara Zachrel (both on the list) included for me in a order. I would suggest that they maybe set a certain amount to your order, and if you spend that much or more, include a catalog.(one per customer) I'm sure they will receive follow up orders!!! Defenitely from me any how!! But then again you say " Free catalogs? And companies would be sending them out to every stamper ... and probably not getting orders from many .... " And that is not what I said at all. In fact, if you go back and read my original message I stated that if I were NOT placing an order then I can see paying for the catalog. I said I only feel that one should receive a FREE catalog IF and WHEN they place an order. I'm not being a selfish person or trying to make these vendor's go broke. If you knew me, you would know that is so far from the truth about the way I am. I just still feel that if I'm placing an order that the least they can do is give me a catalog. And as for you saying "I recently wanted to mail order some parts and accessories for my snowmobile - guess what? The catalog was $5 ... refundable with my first order. I know that the catalog + the cost of shipping it is more than $5 ...." I also stated in my original letter that if they are going to offer you the catalog free with your first order, then I would just rather go ahead and place my first order before I even get the catalog and then they can just put my free catalog in with my order. But that's just MY opinion. I'm not asking anyone to agree with me. I'm still feeling kind of bad about this whole thread but maybe I'm just being overly sensitive. Jenn ============================================================= << Do you have any idea of the slim profit margin our list vendors operate under? I don't ask for free catalogs and I don't ask for other free stuff ... because I know they already cut to the bone to give us the best prices possible. Free catalogs? And companies would be sending them out to every stamper ... and probably not getting orders from many .... I think when you *pay* for a catalog, you take care of it, too ... it doesn't end up in the garbage as "junk mail". I think some of the best r/s money I spend is on catalogs ... PSX, Stampin Up, Magenta, Jim Stephans, Ruby Red Rubber, Stranger Than Fiction, Stampendous, Art Impressions, Raindrops on Roses, Inklinations. You know ... the practice of setting a price on a catalog, and offering to refund it on the first order is a pretty accepted business custom. I recently wanted to mail order some parts and accessories for my snowmobile - guess what? The catalog was $5 ... refundable with my first order. I know that the catalog + the cost of shipping it is more than $5 ....
