Long, Long, Long :{<> Heyyyy, folks, we're back! Here's the Evo's Ft Washington show saga... please feel free to delete if you're not into reading about our personal real-life-fact-not-fiction-comedy-of-errors-trip-but-wonderful-never- the-less (for us) account of the Ft Washington convention. The Beginning: One week before the convention, I decide (and Mr Evo totally agrees) we definitely need to invest in a larger 3rd vulcanizer to meet the demands for rubber we're facing this year. Now, you have to know this was not a trivial decision... these puppies don't come cheap! Soooo, we bit the bullet and ordered it and this beauty arrived 2 days before we're due to leave for PA. The big yellow truck has not been gone 20 minutes when, as I'm continuing to cook rubber like mad for the upcoming show on the two smaller and verrrrry much older vulcanizers, our verrrrry old house (8 yrs younger than Evo, and we all know that's Old) ... apparently takes one look at this "monster" sitting in the garage waiting for the day when it could be put into operation and says, "Whoa! We ain't taking this!" and promptly put half of our electrical system on the blink. And I'm talking big time blink! Nothing we do brings the missing half back. I have to stop vulcanizing for the show... and we diligently (engineers that we are) solve the problem. Computer, tv, and refrigerator are connected by extension cords to the good half of the house to get us through the crisis so we can indeed keep functioning enough to pack and leave for Ft Washington as scheduled. Which we indeed accomplish! :}> OK... the story gets better now. On the way to the airport 2 hrs away, we stop by the bank and cash a check for our trip. I'm driving, so Mr Evo takes enough money out for gas and immediate expenses and "puts the envelope containing the rest of the cash into the red tackle box that acts as our cash box on trips". We get to the airport in plenty of time for the flight, except.... seems a couple of our luggages are overweight, so we have to revamp and redistribute. By this time, it's really close to flight time, so I run to the gate as Mr Evo parks the car. To make a long story short on this, we are the last to board the plane and there are two stand-bys that were torn between wanting Mr Evo showing up in time and wanting to be the ones that made the flight... and I'm yelling "Yippee, he made it" and "Oh, I'm so sorry" at the same time as we run down the ramp to the plane, and they're yelling, "It's ok! We would have felt guilty taking your seats, anyway!" Sooooo, we have a stop-over in Cinncinnatti, and I decide to get the cash from the red box, and you guessed it, it isn't there. We don't know where it is, but that's not the point at this moment... the point is we have very little cash. Which isn't a big deal... but it is! Soooo, ok. Life goes on. We arrive in Ft Washington, have enough cash to tip the Delta guy lifting our verrrrry heavy luggage and directing us as to how to order the Tropiano shuttle to get to the Holiday Inn. The shuttle arrives, our name is called, and.... on the 3rd attempt to get all our "stuff" into it, the Real shuttle arrives... the one we really ordered. Seems it's "dog eat dog" at the airport... different shuttle services listen into dispatches and zip in and snap up the customer and zip out before the "Real" shuttle arrives. Except... (curses, foiled again)... we had too much luggage to fit into the "renegade shuttle" in time to do the zip away trick. Soooo, unload the "heavy stuff" again, get it into the right shuttle service, because, right is right! Right? Well, we thought so, anyway. Ok. We get to the Holiday Inn, finally, around 11:00 at night. I march in, sooooo pleased we made it, while the shuttle guy and Mr Evo unload the "heavy stuff" .... only to find out our room wasn't held for us. They gave it up at 6:00 because we weren't there. No record whatsoever that I had confirmed the room with a credit card. Sooooo, after loads of apologies from the hotel, they send us to a nearby hotel (The Clarion) and assure us they will pay for our room there and we'll have a room the next night at the Hol Inn. Ok.... load up the "heavy stuff" again... and head down the street to The Clarion. Hee hee... still with me? (The best is yet to come! :{<>) Ok, soooo, The Clarion is under renovation. Big time! Outside of the building is half done... the lobby is bare except for the main desk... no restaurant (by this time it's been 10 hours since we've eaten anything but peanuts and pretzels on our flights). But... that's ok! They indeed have a room for us. Mr Evo and the shuttle guy make their first trip into the lobby with the luggage, and head back out. I'm holding the big, plate glass door for them, when I realize... I'm Really holding the door! I mean, the door has come loose and I'm the only reason it's not crashing to the floor! Ok... I can handle this... it's been that kind of week, sooooo, I casually call over to the really nice girl behind the desk and casually say, "Ahhhh, hello...I think we have a problem with the door." Believe this or not, folks, she giggled! I kid you not, she giggled! And then called to a guy in the back who came and relieved me of the door and leaned it against the wall. By this time, the shuttle guy, Mr Evo and I are old friends, and he tries to tell us he won't take our last $10 for a tip, but we win because this man had to be wishing by this time that the "renegade shuttle" had gotten us instead of him, but he never once said it, and he earned every penny and more. Sooooo, ok. We store all the luggage except that which contains our clothes in the restaurant (which isn't) and proceed to our room. Of course our key doesn't work, (did we really expect it to?)... so I go back down 6 floors to get a key that does. No problem with the 2nd key. We're in! We have it made! We take off our shoes, plop down on the bed and don't even have a chance to decide if we're going to laugh or cry when we hear it... "BEEP" and one minute later... "BEEP" and one minute later... yep...the smoke alarm battery is dead. This puppy is beeping every minute on the minute. I pick up the phone, call this reallllly nice young girl back, and tell her the situation. Nope... no batteries does she have, and she wonders if we can live with the beep. Then she hears the beep over the phone and wonderfully exclaims... "NO! You can't live with that!" and comes up to help transfer us to another room. The Middle: The Show! Betsy Ritter, Lisa Huppert and their friend (and now ours) Liz Mills arrive bright eyed and bushy tailed and full of vim and vigor to help us set up for the show on Friday. I'm here to tell you... for real... we could not have gotten everything done without them. In our eyes ... they were and are angels sent from heaven. Without them, we would have been working late into the night in our hotel room to even begin to be prepared for the show the next morning. We were a tad antsy because we hadn't had any volunteers to help us Saturday and Sunday... everyone wanted to shop and play and socialize and we certainly couldn't fault anyone for that. But... these 3 angels saw we were in trouble trying to keep up with the crowd of stampers ... and jumped in without a word and worked their angelic butts off. Heyyyyy, my friends, we cannot ever, ever thank you enough for that. I even forgive Betsy for undercharging a customer 50 cents for which she will probably never forgive herself. :}> By the way... a few of you were overcharged $1 for the cork special because the girls didn't know about the the "twofer" special ... so if you were one of them, let me know and we'll make it right. And special thanks, also, to you, Susan Ruff of Painted Turtle Studio... for providing the extra table for us and help on Sunday which gave the 3 angels from CT more time to have fun shopping and cavorting and creating their joyful "havoc" around the expo center. I never got to cruise the show and really would have loved to be able to give you my views of what was new and wonderful... all I can give you is the view from our booth of you, the stampers. You were wonderful! You were patient and friendly and so wonderfully curious about that which you weren't familiar. You kept us "up" with your smiles and greetings and hugs when we began to feel we had failed you by not having enough rubber or other products at the show. You made us feel soooo good about what we do, even when we don't do it perfectly. And, yes! We plan to be back in Ft Washington in August, thanks to you. The End: But really another beginning... we arrived in Tampa tonight and found the missing cash under the seat of our car. We arrived home to our extension cords and reality... but thanks to all of you... we'll not only pay for our new vulcanizer on time but will also have the funds to repair our electrical problem. Life is good. Thank you. Now... Evo is going to bed and dream of plate glass doors that didn't fall and crash due to some quirk of fate placing her at the right place at the right time and will answer all of your emails as quickly as possible. And that's a promise, so thanks for hanging in here with me. Ellen :}> Evo Evolving Images Need info on HALOS? EvoTemplates? EvoStorage? Rubber Dies? Paper Specials? Life? Princess Di stamps....WOW... my 2 oldest children collect postage stamps and have been wanting to get some of these!!! THANK YOU SUKI!!!!!!!!! There are some REALLY nice things here!! Let's see..where to begin? Carrie Dennison created a very unique magnet out of fimo clay. She carved the wolf herself, then stamped it into an oval of fimo, color it red, and highlighted the wolf in silver...very nice!!!! Elise Gorth used multiples layers on brown cardstock... first the brown cardstock, next a lighter brown cardstock, then a layer of green mulberry paper, she added in some very pretty feathers (I love feathers!!!!) then a long skinny rectangle of the lighter brown cardstock. On top of all this....she cut out a 6 sided figure (can't remember what it's called, but like a stop sign) from a very thin layer of cork material, stamped the PSX wolf head on it in black. On the inside of the card, she printed this on off white paper "Beauty is it's own excuse for being" Very classy!! Fran Robertshaw did a really cool leather look layered card. the card is made out of a light tan leatherette cardstock... and on the front she's layered (in various places, but not over lapping) some type of netting stuff.... then a light reddish woven stuff (I have NO IDEA what it is..but it looks good!!!) and then on the lower right corner she layered a triangle of brown woven something (once again don't know what it is..but it sure looks great) On top of all this, she took a brown piece of fun foam...heated it up and stamped a wolf pair on it.... then she cut it out in a rectangle with paper edgers, and added some type of darker ink around the edges. VERY nice!!!! JPM... also layered on an off white type cardstock... in the upper left corner she stamped "Wilderness is a necessity. John Muir".. then a little layer of corregated darker tan paper...an on top of that she took an actual piece of paper birch bark...(I know what it is cause I've used it myself!!! LOL) and stamped a wolf howling a the moon on it in black. Love it!! Janene Casch/Rubberadddicted.... has watercolored I think... very nice scene with a mother and pup wolf laying in the grass. She then took the same stamp...stamped and colored it on some other type of paper, cut it out..and somehow "stressed" the paper so that it looks raised...very realistic and 3-dish... now HOW did you do that???? Really cool!! Janine Anderson did a really cool wolf head on a reddish brown cardstock... then a square of cork, on top of that another square of peach colored paper...and then she stamped and colored the wolf head and cut it out..and put it on the peach square. In the upper left corner ...she used a natural colored raffia to create a star burst and glued it on. The inside of the card has a layer of that same peach colored paper...very nice. Suki, thanks for hostessing this swap.... it was GREAT. AND most of all..thanks for using those Princess Di postage stamps... my kids will be THRILLED to add those to their collections. This is just another honest question I have about why some vendor's do this. Would someone care to explain to me why some vendor's (at least on the scrapbooking list they do it this way) charge you "exact shipping" for your order while other's charge a minimum of $3. Sometimes I would like to buy a couple packs of stickers or something and I can't because I refuse to pay $3 for shipping when my entire two packs of stickers are only going to cost me $4. Maybe I'm considered a cheap skate but oh well. Most of the shipping charges I've seen have been something to the effect of "up to $20 = = $3 s&h" Now if I were ordering like $20 I probably wouldn't mind paying $3 for shipping - especially if that meant they were going to mail my order in a priority mailer and I'd get it in like 3 days :) But I send people on my sb list packs of stickers all the time and I've sent two packs of stickers for a mear 55 cents. So there's no way I'm going to pay $3 to order them. Know what I mean? And I KNOW I can just wait until I can get a larger order together and order it all at once but sometimes I would just rather not wait. I'd like to get whatever I need (something small) right away and not have to wait until I can place a $20 or more order. PLEASE do not get ticked off at this question. I'm just wondering what the reasoning behind this is. Why some vendor's choose to only charge "exact shipping" while other's choose to go by a "set amount for s&h based on your order total.
