Since I'm prefectly comfortable doing rotary cut quilts, I was pretty comfortable converting this skill to paper and have had no problems, and I didn't have to buy a whole new set of cutting equipment . I've noted that my rotary cutter blades DO NOT dull any faster if I use them on paper. I do have an expensive Omnimat cutting board....which preserves the sharpness of the blades much better than the cheaper Dritz etc. varieties (at least according to the quilting literature). I also have sandpaper 'grippers' on the back of my rulers so the ruler doesn't 'skate'. I'm pretty much a layer-a-holic and feel my accuracy is better this way than any other. For deckle cuts, I use the Fiskars hand-held rotary cutter with deckle blade. In fact, I got Fiskars handles for all the different decorative blades and have them all ready to 'roll'. Hope that helps. Twelve casting designs for only a dollar! There are several ways to do paper casting. This is the easiest one for me. Take a pad of 110 weight watercolor paper pad and tear out a half sheet of paper. Tear this up and shred in your blender with 4 cups of water for 30 seconds. Then put this in a large bowl. (I use a NEW kitty litter pan.) Spray your clay design LIGHTLY with Pam or other spray oil. Then take a strainer and strain out a glom of the paper pulp and let it drain for about 10 seconds. Scoop this out and press into your mold. Then take a clean sponge or paper towel wad and press the pulp into your mold. This will remove the excess water and make the design crisper in the final product. I have found that the faster the casting drys the better the detail. I put the castings in the clay out in the sun on the deck on sunny days. They dry in one or two days. Then take a butter knife and gently pry them out. Since they are made from watercolor paper they are very absorbant so if you use marvies on them they will bleed. I use glitter glue or spray paint. Another tip is that if yours are too fragile and tend to fall apart you can use a squirt of white glue in your paper pulp before you put it in the mold. There is a nice professional papercasting site on the net. http://www.42.com/crafts/index.html - ------------------------------------- From: Ann or Craig Graham What do you do with those neat paper casting things? You can mount them on colored matte board or paper and frame them with an oval or square matte, etc. If you buy unfinished frames, you can paint them with any color of acrylic paint (ie. those small bottles of paint - Delta, Decoart, etc) >to match or contrast with the matte board. You can embellish them with little ribbon bows, dried flowers, those little brass charms, etc before you frame them. You can also make cards with them - glue them onto cardstock or blank cards. Or you can add ribbons and embellishments to them and add a ribbon to hang them - they can hang on little shelf pegs or you can put Chrismas things on them and use them for Christmas ornaments. You can also put them on wreaths and add dried flowers, raffia, ribbons, etc. - -------------------------- From: feathersmc@juno.com (G M) I had just gotten my first cookie press from Walmart and wanted to see how it worked and wanted to see it now! But wasn't in any position to go and rip up paper and blend it and yada yada. So I thunk for a minute about what to do, and then went and unrolled a goodly length of good old cheap (we buy it by the case at Sams ) TP! Soaked it in a bowl of water briefly - the stuff pretty much falls apart on its own with a very small amount of encouragement, strained it and did the paper cast thing. Son of a gun but that stuff worked good! It dried crisp and nice and shows off the image well. The finished cast is good and sturdy and solid. I made another with a bit of coffee added to the soak water and got an interesting splotchy effect when it dried. I am definitely going to use good old white TP for my small castings from now on. - -------------------------------------------- WarmHugs Angelhrt/Tyra *************************************************************************** When I've had troubled times, that had me down on my knees... there's always been someone to come along and comfort me...a kind word from a stranger to lend a helping hand....a phone call from friend just to say "I understand"....and ain't it kinda funny.....at the dark end of the road...someone lights the way...with just a single ray of hope... And I scan my stamps. I like to enlarge them to print out on shrink plastic. I love using different methods to make my cards, pins or whatever. Here's the instructions for the butterflies. I do have lots more available GLAD YOU LIKE THEM!!! VBG! :>) I used clear transparencies made for the ink jet printer. The brand name is 'Great White'. The back has something on it that makes ink stick and not smear. I stamped the butterfly. I usually fill the sheet full. Next spread rubber cement on the stamped side. Apply a RICE PAPER NAPKIN face down on the cement. Rub with your finger to seal. I let this set about 1/2 an hour. Take white glue and spread an even thin layer on top of the napkin. I now sprinkle prisma glitter over all the white glue. Let this set till dry. Cut out the butterflies. The bodies I made out of paper-clay, sculpty(sp)III or Fimo whatever I have on hand. Air dry or bake. I used thin floral wire for the antenna and some I glittered, pearl ex'd or colored with a marker. Use a bonding cement to apply the body to the butterfly. I just love them! Boy did your good wishes and thoughts worked faaaaaaaast!!! Mind ya, I got at the dentist's at 2:30 p.m. and he was a bit late so I had t wait a bit... no problems... Actually I wanted to run away!!!! There he comes and looks at the X-ray that had been taken yesterday when the endodontist finished the root canal. He looked at it and then looked at me and asked: "Is is painful at all?" And I said: "Nope, I don't feel a thing! I can hardly believe I had a root canal done yesterday." So he tested my tooth to see whether I'd feel any pain at all but nothing happened! He also said there was nothing in the gums or around the tooth sooooooooooooo he sent me home LOL! Grrrrrrrrrreat!!! He told me to have another X-ray taken 3 months from now - sorta follow-up thing! He also pointed out that if all of a sudden it starts hurting I shall call him immediately! But so far no pain at all!!! Isn't this wonderful!! Happy happy day! Thanks soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much for all the good wishes and thoughts - I'm SURE they were the reason a surgery wasn't needed :-))))))))) You are great!!!! Love and sunshine always, Stampcas :-) xo having a ball here :-))) This message was from Stampcas - -- The rubberstampers mailing list is proudly sponsored by the Dueling Modems Arts & Crafts Forum.
