E.C. deMars) Subject: Re: RS: Difference between Sculpy/Paper Clay One thing I'm not sure everyone is aware of with the polymer clays (don't know about paperclay). They are toxic--should not eat until you've washed your hands thoroughly, preferably with lanolin based soaps that will help remove the clay. They take a fair amount (especially Fimo) of conditioning to be really ready to work with--I put mine through the pasta machine at least a dozen times, or twist by hand/flatten/twist/roll into rope, etc. a dozen times. Also in baking, have a designated baking chamber or wipe it out after as the residues are not good for you. Should also have good ventilation, a fan drawing the fumes out an open window is good--the lady I took class from had a convection oven she used outside. I use my bottom oven that isn't used for anything else. If I do use the top one, I wipe it out after bakiing them.. Also, it's a good idea to let your objects cool completely in the oven--continues the process. You can bake your things over and over without a problem (if you're building up layers for instance) but do not exceed 275 degrees or it is even worse for the fumes and will burn--especially the lighter colors. Any appliance you use to cut, condition (pasta machine), cook on, etc. should also be a dedicated item--it's used only for the polymer clays never again for food--just no way to completely get them off of it. A tile is a good surface to cook on, but if want a matte finish on back of item, put a piece of cs under. Not to be a wet blanket on the stuff--I absolutely love Sculpey and Promat--tolerate Fimo for a few colors--their flesh is beautiful, while Sculpeys is awful unless you make up your own with a combination of tan or beige and transparent and then that looks pretty good. Fimo's has a "real" look that I think is wonderful. The first two are so much easier to use--condition very quickly and don't kill my arthritic hands. Have fun--just be safe. Eileen I have wept in the night for the shortness of sight that to somebody's need made me blind; But I never have yet felt a tinge of regret for being a little too kind. _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Okay, Lynette ~ I know you've gotten lots of responses already to this one. (Also, I just read that you already have someone to tape ER. LOL) Anyway, one thing I'd like to mention, in case noone else has ... when you put Charlie (*love* that name!) in his crate for the nite, put a blanket (or something) over it so he doesn't see his surroundings. You are going to be *amazed* how quiet he will be when you do that!

I used to work at our animal shelter and this was one of the things I heard mentioned quite often. Then I'd brought a puppy home from there, borrowed a crate and covered it at nite. It works! My Keisha cried for half a minute *at the most* and then was quiet all nite. It became her den and she felt very secure when it was a covered den.

Regarding Charlie's nibbling on you, just remember that that is a natural act and he is not "being naughty". However, if he were to nibble on his mama, she would scold him for it becuz it would hurt her. I believe she would give him a little nip on his face -- so what you can do (in a loving way!) is "ping" him on his snout while firmly saying "NO!" at the same time. (Curl your middle finger a little, touch it with your thumb, and "ping" your middle finger at his snout.)

And just make sure you provide Charlie with items that are *his* to chew. Rawhide is great! (Best if you can buy the unbleached kind -- it will be more tan than white.) Also, nylabones are terrific. They are made of (duh! <g>) nylon, are in the shape of a bone, and he can gnaw away for hours on it. They do come in chicken-flavored!

Happy puppy-ing!  And happy moving!
Rubber-Love,

I have been un-subbed for a few days and missed the first but this one was great. We have a four month old rat terrier and I appreciate your joy and problems. I'm mostly writing to ask you to think about buying rawhide for a dog or puppy. Most vets will tell you that rawhide tearing up dogs intestines is cause of huge pain, emergency surgeries, and often death. It's true the dogs love it but it is terrible for them. My suggestion -- hard clean bones available at most pet stores -- or soft canvas toys, or old socks ro washcloths with knots. It's better if you usea friend's old socks. Socks that smell like you and your family make dogs think that chewing any sock is ok. Remember that puppies need to chew. Let them chew your hand until it hurts -- then yell "0w!" in a loud, unattractive voice. What they learn is that gentle chewing is ok, but anything rough or hard is unacceptable. (I have heard this won't work for labs -- they think they found a squeaky toy). Best wishes for much joy with your new family member. And the smallest mailable size is 3.5x5 inches, not 3.25x5. Sorry to be a snot, but I've been doing mail for 11 years. The sizes haven't changed. With a off white paper mix it gives a GREAT tortilla look. Wonderful idea I got from some paper Jody Morrison sent me a while back. Easy and really effective. Love some of the ideas below. Will have to try some of these soon. wish I'd saved my onion skins today when I made some soup.
