I've had my cat for 11 years and I can imagine that losing him would be almost unbearable. I have a dog, too. And he's a biter. He came along way after the cat so he's completely terrified and humbled by the cat, who doesn't have any front claws but when he swipes at the dog, the dog carries on as if he's been slashed by Freddie Krueger. We don't know why he's a biter, he just turned out that way. He was never trained, he wasn't mistreated as a puppy, it's just his thing, his nature. We've researched it and it's pretty much impossible to teach a dog *not* to bite. He's a Dalmation and they're known to be very hyper but not aggressive. Dalmations (and German Shepherds) are very prone to parvo and Pongo caught it 3 weeks after being vaccinated against it. He barely survived and when he regained his strength he became very protective of the family. He has bitten 2 adults, who pretty much asked for it because they tried to pet him after we warned them not to. Well, okay so he bit my husband's boss on the butt so I guess he didn't really ask for it since he was turned away and it was a cheap shot on the dog's part but the whole incident still brought a morbid, twisted little smile to my face. Some people think they have a 'power' over animals and won't get bitten but I guess they forget that crocodile story about human nature. Or crocodile nature. Whatever. Our dog bites to protect the family. He's never shown any kind of aggression toward any of us, even my 7 year old who rides him, tugs on his ears and tries to bury him in her sandbox. But all the neighborhood kids know to stay out of our backyard and even the gas company guy speed reads our meter. Now when I say 'bite' I mean 'snap'...he barely broke the skin. He doesn't just attack and start ripping off limbs or anything but one little snap from a strange dog is enough to make a grown man pee his pants. Ask my husband's boss (hee-hee, more evil amusement on my part). I don't believe it was bad judgement on your part, Wendy, it was kitty's time to go and fate had already made the arrangements. Maybe that was the whole reason for the dog being at your house. I am sure that you didn't see it. I singed up for Tracy Mays first set of Directory pages last summer, but I had to very reluctantly withdraw because of family problems. So when the next set was announced, I signed up for them. I was out of town for Thanksgiving when they were due and as soon as I got back, I e-mailed the person who was handling the "S" pages and she said it was ok to mail them. I priority mailed them, but in my hurry, I forgot my $5 and mailing label. I e-mailed her again (don't know who it was, as that info is on our old computer) and she said to send it to her. Never heard that it was or was not received, but I did put my return address on both of them, and they never made it back to me, so I assumed that they were received. When the directories were starting to arrive and mine never did, I e-mailed Jessica (who I did not originally send my copies to) and she told me that she never received them from who I did send them to. So this is what it cost me, and I have never seen anyones directory page for it. It seemed like such a good idea. From the beginning, Dad was fascinated with this enchanting newcomer and soon invited him to live with our family. The stranger was quickly accepted and was around to welcome me into the world a few months later. As I grew up, I never questioned his place in our family. In my young mind, each member had a special niche. My brother, Bill, five years my senior, was my example. Fran, my younger sister, gave me an opportunity to play big brother and develop the art of teasing. My parents were complimentary instructors - Mom taught me to love the word of God, and Dad taught me to obey it. But the stranger was our storyteller. He could weave the most fascinating tales. Adventures, mysteries, and comedies were daily conversations. He could hold our whole family spell-bound for hours each evening. If I wanted to know about politics, history, or science, he knew it all. He knew about the past, understood the present, and seemingly could predict the future. The pictures he could draw were so life-like that I would often laugh or cry as I watched. He was like a friend to the whole family. He took Dad, Bill, and me to our first major league baseball game. He was always encouraging us to see the movies and he even made arrangements to introduce us to several movie stars. My brother and I were deeply impressed by John Wayne in particular. The stranger was an incessant talker. Dad didn't seem to mind, but sometimes Mom would quietly get up - while the rest of us were enthralled with one of his stories of faraway places - go to her room, read her Bible and pray. I wonder now if she ever prayed that the stranger would leave. You see, my Dad ruled our household with certain moral convictions. But this stranger never felt an obligation to honor them. Profanity, for example, was not allowed in our house - not from us, from our friends, or adults. Our long time visitor, however, used occasional four letter words that burned my ears and made Dad squirm. To my knowledge the stranger was never confronted. My Dad was a teetotaler who didn't permit alcohol in his home - not even for cooking. But the stranger felt like we needed exposure and enlightened us to other ways of life. He offered us beer and other alcoholic beverages often. He made cigarettes look tasty, cigars manly, and pipes distinguished. He talked freely (too much so) about sex. His comments were sometimes blatant, sometimes suggestive and lewd, and generally embarrassing. I know now that my early concepts of the man/woman relationship were influenced by this stranger. As I look back I believe it was the grace of God that the stranger did not influence us more. Time after time he opposed the values of our household and the principles of the Word of God. Yet he was seldom rebuked and never asked to leave. More than 30 years have passed since the stranger moved in with the young family on Morningside Drive. He is not nearly so intriguing to my Dad as he was in those early years. But if I were to walk into my parents' den today, you would still see him sitting over in a corner, waiting for someone to listen to him talk and watch him draw his pictures. His name? We always just called him T.V. This message was from "Melanie Wortman" - -- The rubberstampers mailing list is proudly sponsored by the Dueling Modem= s Arts & Crafts Forum. I mailed out my last 7 paper plates a while ago and put my return address on them.. Then they were sent back saying had to be rectangular. Never said needed more postage. So, I got out my magic marker and blacked out all postal messages and my address, put another stamp on them and dropped them in a PO box. Next thing I know, Ruth Duefrane emails me and says she has all seven of them...The post office had canceled all stamps and put a rubber band around them and they went to her house in Wisconsin.. So, now she is putting stamps back on them for me and having her mail lady pick them up. The last six should feel pretty privileged that their plate got to travel all over the country before they finally get them. Good luck, Robin "Seeking fish? I can't believe I did that. I received the most wonderful RAK from Thea. I received a cute card with flowers on it, a bunch of background papers that are just beautiful and some card stock that I love! So unexpected and wonderful! Thanks Thea for making my day!
