Now you know that all those stamp companies didn't design all of their own stamps, tho of course, many do indeed. Most (especially the bigger ones) usually purchase or obtain or whatever, their designs from an artist. And by and large, they most always purchase all rights as well, which include publishing rights. However, the artist him/herself is not usually credited, and tho they may no longer own the rights to publish and sell the stamps, they still are the artists. I have sold some designs to stamp companies. They don't credit me. This doesn't bother me. I sold all my rights along with the designs. However, I am still the artist. But, since I want to become known as a stamp designer, I tell everyone where they can buy my designs. So this is a form of self-serving advertising. I swear sometimes I think if I could only stand to stand in the bathroom and pet him for the rest of my life (or his), he'd be happiest cat in the world. very strange guy. anno This message was from "annette" - -- The rubberstampers mailing list is proudly sponsored by the Dueling Modems Arts & Crafts Forum. No uses for logos or large-scale commercial context. In case of sales (at crafts' fairs, etc.), credit to be given to Graphic Savage on back of items. From my understanding of it, I don't think I am an angel company. Now, I'll explain why I have restrictions on the use of the images: (Warning! this is long and philosophical!) In Graphic Design and Illustration, it is customary to be paid for the usage of images produced. *I may sell the images, AND copyrights to whoever (let's say a clip art company), and they can do whatever with my images, I'll never get anything else out of it (name recognition and/or money). *Or, as in this case, as the registered copyright owner, I can decide what I would like to see them used for (rubber stamps, for now). By restricting the medium through which they can be distributed, I keep the door open to produce them, say, as giftwrap, or license them, whatever else, when and if the time comes. There is a difference between "old" artwork (19th century images) and original art. Old artwork is readily available, free of restrictions; (we have all seen some of the same images in different catalogues). Original art is new and is unique to its creator, thus needs more care, especially when all of a similar style. I am worried it seems that there is an equation made between angel status = good-hearted company, not angel = greedy monsters. It sure IS easy to allow free distribution of images that already are in the public domain!!! Most catalogues I own do have copyrights restrictions (some more stringent than mine), AND keep in mind that some of those companies purchased the images outright from the artists!!! As an Illustrator, I'd rather go through all the steps of setting up my own company, marketing, dealing with the purchasers, etc., because it is more interesting and rewarding than selling a few drawings to a company and never view those drawings as "my" creations again. The reason to ask for credit on items sold is simple: if you like my images enough to use them, the purchaser of your cards might also. It is not large-scale advertising, it is the support of an artist trying to build appreciation for her/his images. How has Mary Engelbreit become so famous? (and I assure you, I CAN do the type of images she does; they are not my own style, though). By having her name on the images she drew... It is NOT trying to take advantage of the image users (stampers); it is trying to share something and try to keep the rights to one's own style. When I was in school, it had been stressed to me that the creator of Betty Boop NEVER got a dime for his image because it was stolen and registered by someone else... theoritically, you could have a situation where the artist could be forbidden to make further drawings of the same style. - -- Pascale Steig GRAPHIC SAVAGE Portland, OR savage@aracnet.com This message was from Pascale Steig - -- The rubberstampers mailing list is proudly sponsored by the Dueling Modems Arts & Crafts Forum. The thing I don't have any skill / ability / tolerance / ... for is people who don't fulfil their commitments repeatedly. If I could wake up tomorrow with one talent that I don't have now, it would be to be able to draw and keep the clutter to a minimum in my house. My best friends are usually supportive and fun to be with. What single thing contributes most significantly to your ability to get a good night's sleep? I only sleep well if I am exhausted. Other hobbies besides rubber stamping? I love procrastinating, cross stitching, drinking coffee, writing, reading, some crafts (especially having to do with paints), and organizing my crafts ad nauseum.
