My original thought with these is that they'd be great to go along with seeking for hidden treasures, hiding faux pearls for pearls of wisdom, look up any references to rocks or stones in scriptures, any other ideas--I just think these are so open to possibilities for great object lessons besides being a fun way to give a gift! Have fun, Eileen : TREASURE STONES Apparently these are hot right now. Hand-sized rocks with small toys = inside for which kits are being sold in the neighborhood of $15-20. 1 cup flour 1 cup used coffee grounds 1/2 cup salt 1/4 cup sand 1 cup water small toys, plastic gems, etc. for treasures Powdered tempera paint (s) (optional) (As far as coffee grounds, someone suggested asking neighbors if you don't drink coffee--I thought maybe a restaurant might share, or maybe just put something that would dirty them up some--actual dirt, some brown or black paint lightly mixed in, gravel) Mix all ingredients, except treasure, until a dense dough forms, adding = powdered tempera to a portion of the dough if you want a colored rock. = Break off a chunk about half the size of your finished rock and form it = into a flat oval with a depression on one side. Put the treasure into the = depression and add another chunk around the treasure, forming the finished = rock. Repeat this process as necessary. Let sit in the sun for a couple of days until a hard shell forms on the = rock OR bake in a 150-200 degree oven for about 20 minutes.=20 Rocks can easily be broken open to find the treasure but this might be an = outside activity as the inside of the rock will be a little crumbly. Yield: ??? - ------- OCEAN IN A BOTTLE This resembles a lava lamp or a wave machine except you supply the motion! Clean plastic bottle, 1/2 liter or liter, with smoooth sides 1 cup cooking oil 1/2 tablespoon powdered tempera paint Water Whisk tempera paint and oil very well and let mixture stand for about 10 = minutes. Whisk again if necessary to incorporate all of the paint. Use = funnel to pour mixture into bottle. Add water until bottle is filled as = much as possible. Seal tightly and let stand until cloudiness disappears. = Tip bottle back and forth to form wave action. If shaken, set aside until = the mixture settles. Let the kids help concoct these projects! I have wept in the night for the shortness of sight that to somebody's need made me blind; But I never have yet felt a tinge of regret for being a little too kind. _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. I was getting really frustrated with the glitter/static/acetate combo in places where I wanted to lay down a new color. So I let the original color dry about 15 minutes, then brushed the whole surface with a *very* soft paintbrush...red sable artists brush if you really want to know. Not only did it clean the loose glitter off of the blank spots, but it also brushed off the stuff that didn't have any glue to adhere to (i.e. was going to come off as glitter dandruff anyway). In fact, I hated it, especially in jr. high (bad teaching approach.) Anyway, I often feel like there's a code that's only understood by people who are artists professionally or have taken classes or just have always been into it. This is true both of jargon for techniques and, what's lately more frustrating to me, supplies. If Somerset says "use acrylic paints" that means nothing to me. I mean, I know there are oils and acrylics and watercolors and house paint, but I still would wind up standing in the paint aisle for a long time trying to figure out what it was I needed. The class I'd like to take would be an overview of materials: what the differences are, what products work best with which mediums, about what to expect to pay (I can never tell if something like this is overpriced), etc. I know that I could read up on this, but who has the time? Also, I'm a better auditory learner anyway. I also know some of it is experience or preferences, but it would be great to have a foundation. I guess what I'd like most is to be some artist's apprentice who helps out and then once in a while gets to dabble in things.....I'm afraid it's not very feasible for me now. So what do you all think? Cynthia This message was from Cynthia Sillitoe - -- The rubberstampers mailing list is proudly sponsored by the Dueling Modems Arts & Crafts Forum. It came in a wallpaper envy in a blue gingham pattern. The card is on white cs, layered with more of the same wallpaper. Then a cutout peice of card stamped with a jeans pocket, with a doily "hanky" tucked in. So cute. And inside, confetti to die for - little rubber stamps! I had to ring the DH on his mobile, and tell him, he was shall we say - underwhelmed! bye, Karen This message was from Karen Stone - -- The rubberstampers mailing list is proudly sponsored by the Dueling Modems Arts & Crafts Forum. Someone taught me this trick and it's great. Mix sand in clear embossing powder, use a glue pen or embossing pen for where you want the sand, then use this sand/EP mix just like it was just embossing powder. You can even sneak in glitter or who knows what, depending on what you want it to look like. ========================================================================= Janet Detter Margul | Real women don't have hot flashes... Maybe to a certain extent! But honestly, I DO want an opinion. I'm glad you didn't see any negative words in it. I did. I still think the ad could have been written in a positive light and still get the idea across. I really can't say why, other than what I see is negativity, it just jumped out at me as putting down this list. I know other people want a 'cleaner' list and that's great!
