I have one of those "special kids". He was reading the NY Times at 3, and discussing it with parents of his friends. My foot went down hard, on someone's instep, when I found out his "friends parents" were using him for entertainment when they had company. I tried dealing iwth the school at that time and never got anywhere, howeverwhen I finally said, hey my kid is handicapped I fainlly got through to their Special Services. When I dicsues the matter with the coordinator I think she thought I was just a pushy mom (well I am). She brought us in, leaving 30 minutes for the full interview andtesting. During the interview David started to play withher computer and was typing what we were saying. I think that caught her eye (of course his spelling was not 100%-- but that is inherited from me). We ended up doing 2 days of testing and on A Friday night she called and said he would be starting 1st grade on Mon. I said NO, we should wait till he was 4-- because this way the kids who were 4 turning 5 might not catch on for a few years. Beleive it or not, he got lostin the system that year, his 1st. The original plan was for 1st grade half day kindergarten the rest. He never made it to kindergarten and 2 years later the counselor still didn't realize it. Besides the usual slight social actioj (tying shoes till 3 rd grade) I think he did okay. David is a physicial big boy and not shy, which is part of the reason I made the decision to do what I did. His academics totally bored him, but mostof his teachers understood that and gave him "extra" things to keep him busy. One semester he would get D's,. the next all A's. This is how he is. While in grammer school he was the "computer expert". Whever a system would crash they would call him out of class to go fix it. Again I hit the roof. Complained to the principal, that if he was being called out of class to do this extra work, why was he notgetting credit for it. We are not talking replacing a cartridge, but software applications, etc. (remember this kid was 10). Big fight and I told him do NOT do any computer stuff at school unless it is on the one you are working on. Luckily his counselor backed me up on this. He wa also in some pull out programs for advanced classes. He went onto High Shcool and is now a Junior at 15, who will grad at 16. I understand what Phil means about dating, but luckily Davd is not into puberty yet so I have a few months (not one body hair, but do not tell him I said so). He wanted to go to his prom, becauseeveryone else was, but after discussion I realized not the prom but the partying after was what he wanted. We had no problem with him goign to the prom, but not just to go and do nothing with someone he does not care about. We are allowing him to meet up with this pals and go out at midnight and then spend the day at the shore (NJ). In fact, he even asked a girl to join he (lower class) and his pals. I figure next year, when he is a senior he will go to the Jr Prom (the big one here) and have a good time, and the girl's parents will know he will not be driving so no problem there, etc. College is a tough call. he scored terrific on all tests, but how can I put him away at school with a 19 year old freshman roomate. For the first 2 years he will be commuting then if he wants to transfer on campus great. (He will have his car in the middle of Freshman year). Socially, I think Dave is doing juts fine. his best friends have been in his classes since day 1, 11 years ago, and they all know the age difference, but sizewize they are all tall and big guys. He also had friends in lower grades and gets along well with them. our big problem was do we alow him freedom of the grade or the age. We went for the grade and feel that this worked out well. I haev to say though, when his father and I divorced there was some trouble. His dad kept saying that IIII pushed David, while forgetting that all was done jointly and his signature is on the paperwork as well as mine (funny how back then I said we both should sing it, perhaps I knew then what was coming down the road). If I had to do it all over again. I think I would still put him into the school system early, but another school more geared towards individual activities, etc. He needed the discipline of the school but not the confusion. Lastly: my entire family graduated at 16 (even my parents) and we turned out okay, I think. one brother Merit Winner, other PhD, etc. Jann This message was from JannieQ - -- The rubberstampers mailing list is proudly sponsored by the Dueling Modems Arts & Crafts Forum. I bought the sleeping baby, among others, to add a little humor to some scenery. We have lots of images available to us, but these are unique. Subject: RS: Opinion=20 wanted..PLEASE

Greetings=20 ya'll

I saw on the RS newsgroup the other day an ad about a = new=20 rubber mailing list. Out of curiosity I went to check out what the = web site=20 had to say. I found what I have pasted below.

What I want to = know is=20 that after reading this do you find it just this side of trashing? A = tad bit=20 derogatory? Catty? Elitist? Holier than thou? Or is it me? Am I = reading=20 something into this that is truly not there? I'd really like to know = if I'm=20 loosing it or not <G>. Please post publicly, even if you think = I'm=20 really really wrong! <vBg>

Please don't write me asking = the=20 URL. I didn't save it or write it down or anything and I really = don't have=20 it. Thanks!

Thank you so much...copy is below my=20 name

Sandy
