Laughed most of the way there. I have been there only with paintings instead of stamps. One outdoor show 350 miles from home in no man's land, I got rained on several times during the day. Unload, rain, pack up, unpack and repeated this three times during one day. To top it all off, stringy hair, wet clothes, ruined mats, locked the keys in the vehicle, no hidden key. Finally found a building with a phone, no directory, called 911 and said this is not an emergency to anyone but me. I need assistance to get my car unlocked. The 911 operator was the local sheriff's wife who then routed me to the only person in town that might come help me. Upon arrival he walked over and tried the door as if I (no blond jokes need) and several other people had not done that 50 jillion times. Moved slower than molasses in January and I spent all my profits for the day on him:( It's a laugh now, it wasn't when I was sitting on the steps of an empty building and could not find the phone). I did not want to call my hubby to have to drive 350 miles to get the doors open. Plus, I did not want to smash the window on his pickup. Michelle Mohr - ---------- From: Phil Schloss[SMTP:phil@red-castle.com] Sent: Monday, July 28, 1997 1:08 PM To: rs Subject: RS: Thank you everyone on the list--first convention (long) I want to thank everyone that helped me so much with getting ready for my first convention in Appleton, I used a lot of them, and they were very helpful--the people I promised ummounted to will go out it the next couple of days. And, a very, very special thanks to Connie and Dorothy! The list really is like an extended=20 family. Being a vendor at the convention was=20 a real learning experince. =20 It started by pulling into the parking lot at Oscar's in Appleton to see ladies from the list standing on the sidewalk to say hello to me, worried because I was so late. To them waiting dinner for me. Connie, Dorothy and Barb had pizza. Then, I went back to my motel and finished making stamps--than I needed for Sunday. Because of a wedding we had to wait until 11pm to start setting up, so at 11 pm I went to the=20 convention barn to setup my display. It was so foggy=20 that I missed the turn and drove 10 miles out of my way in what in the daytime may have been a nice drive,=20 but not in the fog. =20 When I got there, the place assigned for my display was in the drive thru of the barn, and very uneven. Well I explained to the very nice Oscar that I just didn't know how I could setup my slatgird display on a rough surface, so she moved me upstairs, to this wonderful larger area with lots of windows--BUT when she saw my display pieces were going to block the windows, she moved me again into a corner with no windows (no light). Well, by now it is midnight and I start putting all of this stuff together, worked just the way it was supposed to and by about 1:30am everything was ready for the next morning at 10, I was wet because of the 100% humidity and the airconditioner was not working with all of the doors open hauling stuff in. Went home and slept like a log. 9am I'm at the barn and find out that the air conditioner did not exist. It was going to be hotter than hot in my display until it ended at 6pm. Connie and Dororthy come by=20 and ask me if I need help, they do this every little while=20 all day it was SO NICE of them. Then the people didn't show=20 up, the 1000 people that I had been told they were expecting was less than 500 (as estimated my a vendor near me). All of the vendors were so nice and gave me so much=20 information, and it was a great day. The sales were $6.50 less than what Marlene had estimated before she left (her ex had a women's fashion accorery_sp? wholesale=20 business for years doing shows like this). Met a lot of great people and several of the other vendors stopped by my display and introduced themselves and 3 or 4 purchased items from me. Judith is very nice, not at all like pictured on the list. She was the first to tell me look at this convention as a learning=20 experience--as it was Oscar's first--and she would get the bugs out for next year. I sold a lot of stuff, and loved listening to the ladies as they looked at the display and the comments they were making to their friends with them. Enjoyed the couple, were the man tried my sample of the new Fabrico markers that were $35.40 a set, and wanted to buy the set, only to have the wife say "they are too high priced" and grabbed his arm and pulled him away. And also the lady late in the afternoon who had spent all of her money and whated a large dragon stamp, and asked the man with her if he had any more money. When he saw the stamp, he started looking for stamps for her, and they left with $40 worth. The show was to be over at 6pm, about 5pm it started to rain buckets out. And within minutes the roof started to leak, and the water started running in downstairs. The first place where I would have been, had 4 inches=20 or water setting there, and the second place I was moved out of was leaking so bad that they just grabbed the display and dragged it out into the middle of the=20 room, and the display still got all wet. Show is over,=20 everyone starts taking thing down--5 instead of 6. I had all of my paper thing down and on the table before my area started to leak, so nothing got wet, Connie and Dorothy were there to help me again--they are great ladies. I haul all of my stuff to the Jeep in the rain and was on the road home before 7pm. Got home just before 1 am and called Marlene in Switherland to tell her how great a=20 time I had, and that I can hardly wait for the next convention. She is have a great time up in the mountains=20 of Switherland, enjoying herself before the work starts on Tue. I learned a lot this weekend, didn't lose too much=20 money, and had a lot of fun. And found some very nice friends. This started out to be short, so I doubt if anyone has read to here, but I'm thinking that being a vendor at rubber stamp conventions may be as much fun as making the stamps. Again, thanks to everyone on the list that has helped me be prepared for the unexpected this weekend. That is only a side issue (like if you sent me something important, send it again, but NOT UNTIL TOMORROW!). The big issue is this... I MUST unsubscribe all these terminally full mailboxes, the server not founds, in fact, every address that will bounce in the next 12 hours. And here's where I need your help. Obviously if mail is bouncing to an account, they won't receive this message either. So here is what I want all of you all to do: TELL PEOPLE TO GET THEIR BOUNCE SITUATION FIXED AND RESUBSCRIBE! For at least the next week, as I pare down problem addresses, there will be a lot of unsubscribing going on. And probably most of that is a temporary problem. If it happens to you, fix whatever is causing your mail to bounce (usually full mailbox) and subscribe again. And when someone whines they've been unsubscribed, please tell them how to resubscribe (I'll post that here at the end, everybody save it please). Please everybody help me watch for panic notes to the list and answer them. Oh and unless it is important, don't write me until tomorrow or the next day. If it is important and urgent, write me at janet.npc@genie.com please. Oh and if you've sent in a Secret Stamper form in the last week, PLEASE resend it to janet.npc@genie.com RIGHT NOW. Maybe soon I'll be able to download mail. Maybe if I get the bounce notices to a manageable number, my ISP won't ban me and blacklist me. Unsubs will start happening at midnight so head's up. And thanks for your support. Even though I haven't seen a piece of mail since Tuesday, I KNOW you all support me. Thanks to all who responded with your thoughts about sharing the directory with the folks at RSM, and a very special "thank you!" to the folks who volunteered to organize it all! I just wanted to share the results that I've gotten with you... Without counting, I would say that we are divided about 1/2 and 1/2 on this. Some people didn't want to have anything to do with it, some really want it to happen. I'm still about where I was before; wanting to do it, but afraid of the risks. I think that if I could be guaranteed that no one would be in trouble over this (the photocopying thing), that I would encourage it, but we all know that that's not possible. Also, I thought that the person that pointed out that the rules about "no mechanical reproduction" don't say that it's ok if you aren't doing it for money had a really good point. If I understand correctly, it is illegal to mechanically reproduce a stamp image for any reason. Doesn't matter if you are scanning them and putting them on t-shirts to sell for profit, or if you are participating in the directory swap. IOW, anyone who did this, *did* break the law, and would just have to hope that the manufacturer has better things to do than to press charges. I've heard enough horror stories now, though, that I wouldn't put it past a lot of them. At this point, I'm almost afraid to draw any attention to it at all. Even writing to them (or any other publication) about it, but not sending them one would worry me. I would hate for such a fun project to end up with the list being 100 members smaller, and a whole bunch of us stamping on the walls in our jail cells.. by hand, of course!! Sorry to be so negative, but I know from experience (unfortunately) that it's no fun to be involved in a lawsuit, and I don't want to beg for one. (The other lawsuit didn't have to do with stamping, and did end up going our way, but the stress was ***unbelievable***). I don't love the idea of sharing this project with RSM any less; I just wish it didn't come with the red tape. I'm afraid I'm going to have to bow out of this one. :-( Thanks again, though to all who wrote.
