During the heat of the space race in the 1960s, the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration decided it needed a ball point pen to write in the zero gravity confines of its space capsules. After considerable research and development, the Astronaut Pen was developed at a cost of about US $1 million. The pen worked and also enjoyed some modest success as a novelty item back here on earth. The Soviet Union, faced with the same problem, used a pencil. My mom came here from Scotland when she was 18, so I know that all my relatives on that side were Scottish. But my dad's another story indeed. I don't know much about them, not even how many brothers and sisters he had (I guess I knew once, but I've forgotten, since I was out of touch with most of them for many years and only recently made re-contact with some of the cousins - who don't know much more than I do. His father came from England and his mother from Ireland. HE (my dad) came from Arkansas. So maybe I can claim a "little bit" of Southern. Not very interesting I guess. Anglo Saxon all the way. Veddy British. I have the typical fair skin and light eyes and hair of that breed. But not any tall elegance which I wish I did. Now Rich is a whole other story. On his mother's side his Great (say it 10 times) grandfather is John Alden and his Great (say it 10 times) grandmother is Pricilla. Direct line descendant. THAT impresses me, tho it won't get me on the subway, will it? Funny thing about that is that because of our different backgrounds, my daughters were eligible for membership in the DAR (Daughters of American Revolution) but their mother (me) couldn't get a foot in the door. Too newly arrived for them. Last week while my brother in law was at the beach with a friend, someone broke in their car and stole deep diving equipment, my brother's drivers license, my sister's go to hospital bag for the baby and practically almost everything they had that was in the car for the new baby to come. This baby is their third and the other two girls wore out everything else. Our family will be sending a package to my sister, but she is out all the stuff she had as she just found out that their insurance does not cover anything stolen from the car :( If anyone wants to send baby onesies, bottles, diaper bag, etc. please let me know and we will get my sister stocked up again. They don't know if this baby is going to be a girl or a boy yet as he/she won't cooperate with the ultrasound. Barb is also having a hard time because the baby is transverse with the head down whatever that means...I hope it doesn't mean that the baby is breech again. I guess it is just one of those things that is out of one's control and it is so frustrating when it happens to a loved one across the oceans.
