Otherwise, if i want a smooth effect, i let it dry until it is dry to the touch (you can see that it is dull and smooth), then heat (good for balloons, and the pads of teddy bear paws). I have also heated mid-dry and had a bumpy effect. Brayering liquid applique and heating right away gives a leathery effect. Also, after heating, you can sprinkle glitter (any kind) on top of the liquid applique and the glitter will stick without glue. Michelle. p.s. I think you could probably not ever heat it if you wanted, it would present a raised 3-D surface that is dull. This is probably a good idea if you ever want to mail a stamper a sample of liquid applique as it gets somewhat squished in the envelope during post office travel after it has been heated. When the envelope arrived at its recipient, he or she could heat it and watch it change. - -------------------------- From: Dannie Graves The only time I have ever seen liquid applique NOT heated was on a honey jar. The person stamped a honey jar and instead of coloring in the honey, they put yellow liquid applique on it and then didn't heat it. It looked kind of like honey dripping over the side of the honey pot--neat effect. They also put some of the yellow LA on the bears paw to make it look like he had dipped his hand in the honey jar. - --------------------------- From: kayelynne@juno.com (KayeLynne Ingold) I heat mine immediately. I like the bumpy look and feel. Or I will put glitter on the white to make it look like snow. I made a Santa face with Liquid Applique. I used all different colors and didn't use markers. I let that one dry overnight and heated it from the back side of the card. It was a real nice look too. ------------------------------------------ From: sgtvwfe1@juno.com (Lisa M Varshal) Thanks for all the great tips on the LA... I did some of this last nite and waited till it dried to heat it and loved the results much more then doing the heating right away at least for the project I was doing so thanks again everyone for putting your thoughts out there.... - ------------------------------------- From: lkthmpsn@jcn1.com (Lisa Thompson) Squeeze out your brown LA onto a piece of foil, roll your brayer through it until it is coated. Roll onto cardstock, covering all spots. Clean your brayer now! Then heat your card with your heat gun, no need to wait overnight for it to dry. You could add some flesh color to this too. Or burgundy. Makes a WONDERFUL suede background. Stamp right on it with Black colorbox. Get some more colors! Experiment by squirting several colors onto the foil and brayer into them all at once. Try using your brown and orange together and then punch out some big leaves after heating. Use them for layering and accents. ------------------------------ From: mlynd@juno.com (Marie Lynd) I don't wait for it to dry. I just put it on and then hit it with the embossing gun. Just don't overheat or it gets all bubbly (unless that's the look you're going for!). --------------------------- From: "Stamp Me Soon" One thing that I have noticed is that when you send LA through the postal service it smashes flat. So you can either Hand Cancel your LA creations or one thing I do is put the LA on and then tell whoever is receiving the card to put their heat gun or hair dryer to the card and watch it grow. :) Surprise card. I show LA in my stamp demos and I usually do 10-20 samples and leave them for quite a while, weeks, months before heating, and they still are fine. I have found that you want to at least let it dry until it is not wet to the touch. If you don't let it dry long enough it will pick off quite easily . ------------------------------- Liquid Leather is a technique I learned at a class taught by Suze Weinberg. I don't know if she's the "inventor" but that might well be. For creating the Liquid Leather look, you need several different colors of Liquid Applique (it might work with a single color like brown but I haven't tired that yet), a large piece of wax paper, a brayer and uncoated cardstock. Pour a generous amount of Liquid Applique onto the wax paper, mix several colors, depending on the color you want to achieve. A mix of several different ones will most likely result in some sort of brown which looks most like real leather. Swirl those colors together to blend (they don't need to be fully blended). Take your brayer and "ink" it up with the mess you've made :). Roll over your cardstock, covering every bit of it, don't leave white spots. Re-ink your brayer as often as needed. The covering shouldn't be too thick nor too thin, so the cardstock doesn't shine through. When the card is covered up, take your heat gun and open fire. The thin Liquid Applique cover will rise just a tiny little bit, making the card look as if made of suede. The surface can be stamped on; try petroglyphs or Native American designs in a darker shade of brown for example. It's fun!! Hope this helps. InsANNEity lost and found in rubber :D - --------------------------- From: Ann or Craig Graham You can also use Puff paint instead of LA. It is cheaper, and works just as good... - ------------------------ http://www2.netcom.com/~smith25/cloud9.html ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "True friends are like guardian angels; always with you in spirit, loving you, supporting you, expecting nothing in return ..." --Barclay ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This message was from "Angelhrt" - -- The rubberstampers mailing list is proudly sponsored by the Dueling Modems Arts & Crafts Forum. I have been doing Pergamano for about a year. Pergamano is now also being marketed by another company and is called Tarjeteria - the techniques for the two are very similiar. Now for a shamless plug - anyone living in the Dallas area - I have several Pergamano cards on display at Tejas Stamps in Garland and will be teaching a Tarjeteria class on May 31. I am very honored that they think enough of my work to ask me teach. OK, now the instructions: 1. Trace the image using a calligrapy pen and ink onto parchment paper. The traditional colors are gold and white, but I'm seeing more use of other colors. I use post it tape to hold the parchment to the pattern. 2. Perferating - punching holes in the parchment using a needle tool. There are several different tools - single needle, double needle, triple needle, four needles, a flower tool and some others. To perferate, you leave the parchment on the pattern and push the needle tool straight down thru both the parchment and the pattern. After perferating is done, you can cut out designs but that is the last step - you want to make sure that the strength of the paper is not compromised before embossing. 3. Color the design - there are alot of different ways to color. Remove the parchment from the pattern. You can paint the design on either the front or back (painting on the back gives a smoother look to the card). You can use dorsing colors (an oil based crayon) on the back - this is colored on and spread with a Q-tip to even out the color. You can use water color pencils - the water color pencils come in sets of 2 types of pencils. One is an oil based pencil used for a base, it is also colored on and spread with a Q-tip. It allows the parchment to accept the water color better and helps prevent the paper from warping from the water. The second type is the actual water color pencil. The color is applied by wetting a paint brush and touching it to the pencil to pick up color and painting it over the base color. 4. Embossing (this is dry embossing) - Embossing breaks the fibers in the parchment causing it to turn white and making a raised area. The trick to embossing is to rub gently and gradually add pressure. If you emboss too hard from the start, you end up with balck marks that don't go away and the paper tears. Embossing is usually done on the back, but I have gotten some pretty textured flower by embossing on both the front and the back. 5. Cutting - there are many different ways to cut out the designs. You can cut out whole sections for a lacy effect, the four hole needle tool makes a square that when cut properly, makes an X, you can use the single tool to punch holes all around the card, then tear along the dotted line like a postage stamp to make a lacy border. 6. All that's left is to put your card together. I usually poke little holes in the fold of the parchment and the card stock and tie them together. Choosing the color card stock is the hardest part - you get a different look to the card depending on the color you use. I have also used printed tissue paper to back the parchment. I made a baby card, using a very simple border pattern, on the parchment I just wrote the baby's name and vital stats and the parchment and backed it with a baby print, turned out very nice. These instructions will make very little sense it you have never seen a pergamano card. You can see one at the site below (this is the only example that I have been able to find). My guess is that this card is colored using doring colors, all of the white lines appear to be embossed and the outside edge is done by perferating around the border and tearing off the excess. http://www2.netcom.com/~smith25/cloud9.html ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "True friends are like guardian angels; always with you in spirit, loving you, supporting you, expecting nothing in return ..." --Barclay ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This message was from "Angelhrt" - -- The rubberstampers mailing list is proudly sponsored by the Dueling Modems Arts & Crafts Forum. It'll really be great for scrapbooking . . . which I haven't actually started yet. I'm kinda scared -- you know, kinda like kindergarten jitters. I don't know where to begin. I've actually bought a 3-ring binder and some *top-loading* sheets and templates and acid-free paper and stickers and ... I don't know what else .... But the thing is this: I have all of my most recent (last couple years or so?) pics already in these little albums. So I'm thinking I'm probably not going to go for the big "theme" pages but just fancy up some pages, decoratively cut up some pics (in order, mostly), and just put 'em in a new scrapbook album. Is this okay? Are there "rules"? Any helpful ideas will be received well by me, also sometimes known as the 8th dwarf -- "Grateful". Last but not least, Dawn sent me a page of EP samples from Judi-Kins & VLVS. Wow!!! That's a great idea, Dawn! There are some pretty special ones in there. I work for an investment casting company. We make everything from the Patriot Missles to Callaway Golf Clubs. My job is to design high volume/low cost castings. Also to determine what piece work rate the jobs should be set at. As you can guess, this doesn't make me popular with the production workers. I do several things with this: 1. I like to cut images out. Then, I layer a few different colors (to coordinate) and mount the image in the center, or wherever. 2. I also love to layer with mulberry paper. I tear it out in all different shapes and layer behind either full sceens or cut outs. 3. I have sometimes cut out wreaths both in and out, and layered over paper that has a saying stamped in the middle. 4. I also love patterns of paper that I use to add texture and color to my cards. I look forward to more ideas as I am still learning...but then, aren't we all?? If you don't want a reverse image of what you press the Penscore into press it into another piece of Penscore and you'll have an original.
