This is something we do for FUN and we aren't obligated to rearrange our rules for the convenience of the participants. Some people get offended at a 6/5 swap rule. Some people get offended at requests for cash rather than postage. Some people get offended at requests for envelopes rather than mailing labels. Some people get offended that the hostess chooses to be firm on the deadline. Some people get offended when hostesses are lenient on the deadline. To all of which I say, whatEVER. If you don't want to send cash, or 6/5, or you would like a deadline extnsion, write to the hostess--she may be willing to be flexible. But she is under no obligation to be, it's something she is doing for her benefit and the benefit of swap participants, not as a required service. And likewise, you are under no obligation to participate in that swap. It's not like there is a shortage of swaps you could join. As for trading with everyone, it's a legitimate request, and Lisa suggested a legitimate way to accomodate that request. Again, if that's not agreeable there is always the option of finding another swap. Or host your own, that's the best guaranteed way of seeing a card from every participant! First you need the drawings. They are made into a plate. We use magnesium engravings, so we send our art out to an engraver. He returns the etched mags to us and we go on the matrix. Some companies prefer a polymer master, and that is made with a photo process that creates a hard polymer plate. Then they go on to the matrix stage. The matrix is what we actually press the rubber in. We take a piece of matrix and place it into the vulcanizer along with your plate( plate on top of course!). Then the two are "cooked " together, releasing the most horrid smell of formaldehyde gas that you can imagine! After 5 min or so of heat & pressure, the matrix is finished, and hopefully you got a good clean "crash" and are ready to move on. If you don't like it for some reason, you have to start all over. The matrix board is not reusable and it is quite expensive. Once you have a good matrix, the plate is filed away for when the matrix finally need remade. Here's the good part... the rubber! Rubber comes in many formulas and colors. The color, in our experience, has absolutely nothing to do with it's actual stamping ability. There are however differences in the durometer of rubber( it hardness) and different companies prefer different qualities. Uncured rubber comes on a roll or in precut sheets, and it is very heat sensitive. Here in GA, I keep mine in the refrige all year, as it can easily cure itself in our heat. This I learned from experience! Basically, you just cut the rubber to size and lay in on the matrix. Then the rubber is covered with a Teflon coated paper, and put in the vulcanizer. The jars are closed, and the rubber cooks for a specified time and temperature until it's a stamp! You can see a vulcanizer on my webpae at When it comes out, you have to immediately peel it off the matrix. It's really hot and after pressing for a wile you'll get calluses on your finger tips or wear gloves. Sometimes, it rips, but that is unusual. Some companies use a release spray or powder on their matrix boards, and this is what the residual coating is that sometimes make it difficult to ink up a new stamp. Often, you will see a variation in the thickness of dies when you order grab bags or from company to company. Usually that has very little effect on the usability of a stamp. If a particular die has come from a full plate pressing, it's usually thicker than one that was spot pressed. This too, varies from company to company. Well that's it for the actual production of the rubber. It's not rocket science, but there is definitely an art to it. Even with temp gages, and pressure gauges, it's not a perfect science, and each machine & stamp maker are a little different. We have 3 machines, and they all have their little quirks! Happy Stamping!
