I got a few on Monday and one today. There are still 4 more folks that I'm waiting for. Instead of waiting for them, I decided to swap them out today, but didn't have time to go to the PO. So...these will be going tomorrow. If/when I get the other 4 packages I'll swap them out between the 4 of them and keep the extra card to recycle to newbies. I said I was going to be strict in when I sent these back out but with the UPS strike and all...kinda made the USPS kinda slow. I just had to be flexible! Plus, one person sent theirs EXPRESS mail to me in which they promised to get to me on Saturday. Instead, it took 6 days to get to me! She's got her money coming back to her if she can find her receipt! Anyway....keep a heads up. Your cards are on the way to you! She is not very tall, horizontally challenged, they say, and she has many hobbies to fill up her day. Oh sure she has things with family and friends, but, boy don't mess with her as her day ends! She used to go outside and tend to her land, but that time is over; a new hobby she has on hand. She once dug up rocks and planted flowers and such, but, now not a shovel does this woman touch! She used to get bit by bugs galore, but that does not happen - no, not anymore. She once had a tan that glistened in the sun, but since then she has found a new sort of fun. Her once "farmer tan" does no more show, no, now she has yet a different glow. This glow is not quite as bright as the sun, but it has her in a trance, and to watch her is quite fun. She sits in her chair for hours on end, to find and talk to any new friend. Yes, this woman has become one of "those", some say a "geek" or a "nerd" and it shows. She has no pocket protector to speak of, instead, her "geekness" has instilled a deep love. This love is for an inanimate object with which many others she does connect. No more does she speak words she once knew, for now a new language has her consumed. Now, when she laughs, she says "L-O-L", And, her secret password, she will not tell. Her fingers tap wildly, her butt falls asleep, cancel the cable, it is AOL she must keep! Examining the headers may provide some help in determining what is causing the error. In this mini lesson, I shall try to discuss some of the error messages I have received from the course list and hope this lesson also provides some insights to headers and to error messages. *********************************************************************** UNKNOWN HOST ERROR *********************************************************************** First, a letter I sent out was returned to me, so let me show you the header. > From: > To: rbehrens@kersur.net > Subject: mail failed, returning to sender >Reference: This header is self explanatory for the most part. MAILER-DAEMON is the servers failed email program or software package that processes email returned to the server. As you can see it is sent back to me with the SUBJECT of MAIL FAILED. The REFERENCE is just a code for administrative purposes, so for our purposes we just ignore it. The next part of the letter is as follows: > |------------------------- Message log follows: ----------------------| > no valid recipients were found for this message > |------------------------- Failed addresses follow: ------------------| > ... unknown host This part of the header is usually the most helpful for my purposes. The error message is pretty clear -- there was no valid recipient for the mail I sent. And the reason for this returned mail is an UNKNOWN HOST meaning that the DOMAIN.NAME.HERE part of the address is not listed or known to my server. That particular error is fairly clear, except we don't know why the host is unknown. So what are the possible problems. 1) The address I used in my TO: fields was incorrectly entered with regard to the DOMAIN.HOST.SITE. However, in this case I copied the address using my COPY and PASTE function so I could not have made an error in my typing. Therefore, now I must speculate as to why this letter failed. - --> A) This host IP address is not listed in my server's database. - --> B) This host IP address no longer exists - --> C) The original letter I received contained an error in the host IP address because either the sender mistyped the address or during the transmission of the letter to me, somehow the address got messed up. The bottom line is that I can not determine why the letter was not delivered except to know that the HOST IP is UNKNOWN to my server. This explanation is not much help but is all that anyone can do or say at this point. ************************************************************************* UNKNOWN USER ************************************************************************* The following is the header I received about an unknown user. This header is fairly explanatory. > To: mjrb-qa-approval@world.std.com > Subject: Returned Mail: Undeliverable > From: Mailer-daemon@aol.com > Date: Thu, 26 Oct 1995 20:02:40 -0400 > The mail you sent could not be delivered to: > 550 is not a known user > The text you sent follows: The header itself again shows the DAEMON and from which server; in this case from AOL.COM The 550 in the text message is an error code. The was deleted by me for confidentiality purposes but tells me that this subscriber is no longer a know user at AOL.COM. This problem will often occur and usually means the user either has discontinued their account without unsubscribing to the list, or have changed their account without unsubscribing to the list. ************************************************************************* CANNOT SEND FOR ......... ************************************************************************* This error message I include in full with comments within the header to illustrate information about this type of header. > To: > Subject: Returned mail: Cannot send message for 3 days > From: Mailer-Daemon@world.std.com (Mail Delivery Subsystem) > Date: Fri, 27 Oct 1995 01:13:56 -0400 > The above header information is fairly clear. The piece of information most helpful is in the SUBJECT, which says this letter sent out can not be delivered for 3 days. This type of problem occurs either because one of the links is down, or the link only sends out information on a schedule (at various times only), or this link needs a certain number of letters in a queue before it will send them out > This is a MIME-encapsulated message > > --WAF27280.814770836/europe.std.com > > The original message was received at Mon, 23 Oct 1995 21:47:28 -0400 > from world.std.com [000.000.00.000.0] > The above header information is not very useful to me and just has some administrative coding and other administrative information. > ----- The following addresses had delivery problems ----- > (unrecoverable error) > This information is somewhat helpful because it tells me that this users address could not be located by the link server for some reason. I have not really been able to determine the reasons for this type of error message but suspect that the user@domain.name is an incorrect address, either because something got scrambled along the way in sending this letter or the address is not a valid address for some other reason. > ----- Transcript of session follows ----- The following and remaining part of the header is just enclosed here for you to look though. The users real addresses have been deleted. The majority of the header is administrative stuff and the last part of the header tells me which mailing I sent was returned due to the error. > ... Deferred: Connection timed out during initial > connection with domain.name > Message could not be delivered for 3 days > Message will be deleted from queue > > ----- Message header follows ----- > > --WAF27280.814770836/europe.std.com > Content-Type: message/rfc822 > > Return-Path: > Received: from world.std.com by europe.std.com (8.6.12/Spike-8-1.0) > id VAA03331; Mon, 23 Oct 1995 21:47:28 -0400 > Received: by world.std.com (5.65c/Spike-2.0) > id AA02445; Mon, 23 Oct 1995 21:47:25 -0400 > Message-Id: <199510240147.AA02445@world.std.com> > To: mjrb-qa@world.std.com > Subject: Re: help with netscape > From: original-user@this.users.domain.address > Date: Mon, 23 Oct 1995 13:38:10 -0400 > Sender: mjrb-qa-approval@world.std.com > Precedence: bulk > Reply-To: mjrb-qa@world.std.com > > ----- Message body suppressed ----- > > --WAF27280.814770836/europe.std.com-- > ************************************************************************* UNDELIVERABLE MAIL ************************************************************************* The following error message header is very similar to the one presented above. I included it for you to just compare it to the one above. Again this letter was undeliverable because it could not be delivered for 5 days. What this message means is that the server tried to send this letter for 5 days unsuccessfully and is returning it to me to notify me about this problem. Again, I have no real understanding of why the letter could not be delivered but speculate that either this user is no longer registered on the internet by the address used in the list or the user changed user's address without unsubscribing from the list. > To: > Subject: Undeliverable Mail > From: NOTE: the domain.name.address is that of the server trying to send the letter to the user. > Date: Fri, 27 Oct 95 22:55:08 MEZ > > domain.name.address unable to deliver following mail to recipient(s): > > domain.name.address unable to connect for 5 days to recipient host. > > ** Text of Mail follows ** > Received: from europe.std.com by domain.name.address (IBM VM SMTP V2R2) > with TCP; Sun, 22 Oct 95 22:17:52 MEZ > Received: from world.std.com by europe.std.com (8.6.12/Spike-8-1.0) > id RAA23761; Sun, 22 Oct 1995 17:12:14 -0400 > Received: by world.std.com (5.65c/Spike-2.0) > id AA24495; Sun, 22 Oct 1995 17:11:58 -0400 > Date: Sun, 22 Oct 1995 17:11:58 -0400 > Message-Id: <199510222111.AA24495@world.std.com> > To: mjrb-training@world.std.com > Subject: MJRB-17 >> REVIEW of LIST SERVERS << > From: rbehrens@kersur.net > Sender: mjrb-training-approval@world.std.com > Precedence: bulk > Reply-To: mjrb-training@world.std.com > > > MJRB-17 >> REVIEW of LIST SERVERS << > The rest of this lesson in whole was return to me and I cut it as not needing to be sent here. ********************************************************************** FINAL COMMENTS ********************************************************************** There are some other error message headers you might also receive but I believe these illustrations cover the most common errors. So in very brief summary: UNKNOWN HOST -- The host or the account where the subscribed user had originally used is no longer available. Host accounts will come and go either by changing their names or no longer being available as a host. UNKNOWN USER -- Similarly, the user and their address is no longer listed on the host system. UNABLE TO DELIVER -- Either the host sends out mail periodically, in which case the error message clarifies that the letter can not be delivered for so many day; OR, there is problem in the user address and the host will keep trying for so many days, OR, some other problem exists in the link and the host will keep trying for so many days. Hopefully, this mini-lesson has given some additional information to read headers and understand some of the messages within the headers. Most often, unless you are running a list, you don't really need to become overly familiar with headers, except as an interesting exercise in another aspect of the internet. ************************************************************************ A WORD OF CAUTION ************************************************************************ A word to the wise, though, is in order. Whenever you sign up for a list, make sure you double check your user-name@domain.address very carefully. Lists will accept the name you send them and do not check to see if the address is a valid address. Thus, if you inadvertently make a small error, a typo for instance, be assured, you will not receive anything from that list. And, the list moderator or owner will receive undeliverable mail. - -- Bob -- ============================================================ Robert R. Try Crayola...wonderful to use,=20 come already sharpened, and very economical. They can be=20 bought at any Walmart, Staples, Office Depot, etc, at very good=20 prices. Such good prices, in fact, that I can't buy them wholesale=20 for what I pay for them in discount stores. If I could, I would (and=20 I've tried)... because I love them. Hints for using colored pencils.... If you want a blue sky, don't just choose a blue and color the sky=20 in. Use several blues...add some orange or magenta or yellow or=20 purple or green! Make that sky reflect what your feeling is for the=20 card you're creating. Watch how your own mood changes, as you=20 use different colors. What you feel when coloring is the feeling=20 you inspire in the viewer of your stamped artwork. Water? Reflect in the water what you use in the sky. That's what=20 Mother Nature does! A beach scene? Ditto! Mother nature also uses colors on the=20 beach to reflect what she has painted in the sky. People? Yes! In the highlights and shadows of people under a sky... you see some of the same colors. We do indeed reflect our=20 environment. Don=92t be afraid to experiment with color! Do what feels good to you=20 and looks good to you. Go for it! Use pure color....blend colors... layer one color over another! It's exciting! And, again, if you're not sure you will like colored pencil and are=20 hesitating... spring for the Crayola first. They are soft, super=20 blendable, and user friendly. No affiliation with Crayola here,=20 just encouraging you to experiment with different mediums in your=20 rubber stamping creations, because it's fun! =20 Ellen :}> (Evo) Evolving Images E-Mail: evo@pobox.com=20 Homepage: http://www.mindspring.com/~halide/evolimgs/home.htm This message was from "Ellen Gordon (Evo)" - -- The rubberstampers mailing list is proudly sponsored by the Dueling Modem= s Arts & Crafts Forum. I'm hosting a swap and have discovered that one of the sets of cards is too large to fit in the envelope I was using to send back to the players. I have already addressed and put postage on some of the envelopes. Now what?? Should I just send out a separate envelope for the cards that don't fit? Poor planning on my part, first time hosting mistake :( Any thoughts?? We need a lot more people than that. Please sign up. If the deadline is too soon, let me know and I will see what I can work out. The more people the merrier!!! Hostess: Dannie Graves E-mail: DannieG@stlgate.byu.edu Theme of Trading Cards: Anything goes Deadline for sign-ups: Friday, August 29th Swap mail in deadline: Friday, September 19th Number of cards: I will close the swap on August 29th and then e-mail the list and tell you how many cards you will need to send in so you get one from everybody. If you're interested, please sign up asap! Many people have asked me what trading cards are---they're cards that are 2 /12 inches by 3 1/2 inches (they fit in the baseball card sheet protectors). They're like postcards in that there's just a front and back--it's not folded. Stamp whatever you want on them and put your information on the back. Tell everybody about who you are--you can even make it like a business card. This is a fun way to get to know a little bit about everybody on the list!!! Sign up now!!! If you forgot to add something to your post and posted a correction then that counts as your second posting for the week. It works out real good and not excessive postings.
