Point your web browser at http://crafts.dm.net/ . > Well Tammy and others -- The El Nino is a major ocean warming episode near the Equator to the west of central and south America. The surface winds here are primarily easterly and this drags the warm surface waters to the west and causes a "pile up" of warmer water and higher sea level in the western Pacific. Then, colder waters in the eastern Pacific upwell and the sea level lowers. When the El Nino occurs the surface winds shift and cause the warming to occur on the eastern side of the Pacific instead. This is an almost 18o degree change in the typical weather pattern, so it effects the weather world wide. But, since it causes the warming on the western coast of North America we tend to see more drastic. The big factor is that the atmosphere does maintain some semblance of a pattern at most times. For example there are areas around the globe where there is a nearly permanent Low pressure center (ie. the poles) and other areas where there are high pressures. The positioning of these varies with the time of year, but for the most part they remain in the same region. Wind is caused from differences in pressure (remeber that the atmosphere is always trying to reach equilibrium) and when these patterns of highs and lows change the wind pattern does too. Well, the El Nino has a wind shift due to one of these constant pressure centers changing from a low (asociated with wet, monsoonal weather) to a high (dry and warm weather). Because the pattern changed there it is going to change in other areas across the globe in its neverending quest for equilibrium. Thus area that are usually wet a one time in the year may end up with high pressure and very little rain during theri normal wet period and vice versa. There is still a lot more to learn about El Nino. At one time they felt it was on a seven year cycle, with each episode varying in degrees of severeness, but I haven't heard anything about that theory for many years. I hope I didn't confuse you all. If you have any other questions I'd be happy to answer them! WHY, please tell me WHY there are people who don't feel compelled to do the same? I would never go to someone's house, make and mess and then leave without helping clean up (we all know how a stamping mess can grow and grow if you don't stop and clean once in a while). Why would you let your children do this? >> Janet: This hapens to me all the time! One of my neighbors has a 3 year old boy, (same age as my daughter Missy) and I just dread when he comes over to play. . .which is every day. One day while he was here, I caught him swinging on Missy's bedpost. She has a white canopy bed. Well, he ended up cracking the pole right off. On another occassion, he was here and ended up going into the fridge for a drink. He ended up pulling out a glass container of apple juice and dropped it on my ceramic tile floor breaking two tiles. Same day, he was playing in my living room and knocked over a very expensive vase my sister bought for me as a birthday present. That was trashed. Just recently, we had our home painted. Here comes Logan on his bike - --crashed right into the garage door leaving some nice marks. Countless toys have been broken in between. I have conveyed these things to the parents who simply brush it off. Never have I heard "Let me offer to pay for this or that." which I would insist on if it were my child. Ya know, I probably wouldn't even take it, because that's the type of person I am. But it sure would be nice to hear them apologize at the very least. Wrong! His mother's a school teacher too. You'd think she'd be a little better about teaching her kids how to behave at someone else's home. She also had the audacity to complain about my daughter making a mess in their toy room with her son, and not picking up after herself. When she told me this I asked her to call me whenever she had a problem with Missy not picking up, and I would be happy to come by and see the process through. On yet another occassion, my son Mark (who plays with their other son Johnny) was at their home and was told my Johnny's father to pick up the mess in the toyroom and Mark hadn't even made any of the mess. He said it was like that when he got there and I do believe him. Well, Mark told me he helped pick up anyway. I was proud of Mark's attitude here, but I was also floored! I do teach my kids to pick up after themselves and they are pretty darn good about it. 3 years olds do require a little more prodding, but Missy will pick up when I tell her that she won't be playing with anything/anybody else until her room is cleaned up, and generally that's all it takes. I think it's good to teach them a little responsibility even at such a young age. I'm really in a bad spot with my neighbor because my daughter adores this little boy and he is one of only two kids she plays with in the neighborhood. Uggghhhh! What to do? In it was wallpaper samples, pin backs, plastic red cord that looks very much like shoestring licorice, some stickers, a UM image and a cute note to go with it all. What a wonderful gesture of kindness, how did you and Laura, who also sent me a RAK package, know I needed this today? Thanks so much. The card is done on black leather cardstock with material attached to this, black kromecote paper with an interesting image of a woman or mask, bordered with glitter, a great collage card Karen. They are all just great and someone said already if these are "newbies" I'd love to see the "oldies"!!! Fab cards everyone!!!! 1. Fridge magnet by DLMARLER - Beige cardstock background, stamped with two small girl ragdolls with toys and says beside them "Thinking of you". I've put this on my PC, must buy the stamp very soon. 2. Card by anno - Green cardstock, lovely shade, with green and gold coloured thin napkin like tissue and then dark green mulberry - both torn different sizes. White paper then placed on top of that stamped with flower pots, plants and a trowel and coloured in. Inside the card it reads "From the seeds of kindness happiness grows". I just love all the different greens in this one. 3. Card by Maureen Rinski - Glossy cardstock layered with gold and burgundy cardstock, the burgundy is stamped with the Golden gate bridge in embossed gold. Inside it say "Happy Birthday". The gold and burgundy look so rich together, I'll have to try these out. 4. Card by Zandrielle Estes - White cardstock stamped with beautiful shells two large clams with sea under them and smaller shells a cross the top. The two large shells are coloured and have glitter on them, the sea also has glitter on it. This is so effective, I've never tried glitter but having seen this I must have a go. 5. Card by ?(NO NAME) - Large green cardstock stamped all over with small frogs and red lips. There is then a large frog at one end of a strip of cream card and a castle at the other end, in between is reads "before you meet the handsome prince you have to kiss a lot of toads" - love it so so true. I've enjoyed all the cards, thanks to everyone who took part and especially to Terri for being the swap hostess and sending the First batch of Scottish swap cards. Why not, when speaking to the parents, let them know that you are there to teach their children and that you don't believe in being a slave to the children. They, the children, must learn responsibilities like putting away the toys and items they get out. Explain that to become a successful adult the children must learn to assume responsibility for their actions and if they don't put away things they will not be considered very responsible. Suggest that the parents supervise their children while they return the items to the shelves before they leave. As for yelling above the noise - I would speak in my normal voice (as I always did when teaching) and if they don't hear me that's tough! Even older kids who often try to whisper to their friends when I was speaking found out that I don't talk to one or two. They all must listen or we sit and wait. Eventually those who really want to hear will quiet the others and you'll have their attention. Does it say anywhere that you must accept children who are not controllable? Send them home with a note that until they are ready to follow directions they are not welcome in your room. That should get notice and the parents will show up to yell at you. Wait until they calm down and tell them again what your rules are. Sorry to seem like I'm preaching, but that's the way I feel and the way I handled my classes and parents. After 25 years of teaching I probably had only two or three parents who thought I was unreasonable. Most parents were very willing to help in my classroom and many of the kids came back for visits. I still have e-mail contact with several. Barbara (StampBear) bholl@halcyon.com On Wed, 20 Aug 1997, kim jungman wrote: > I am a teacher and last night we had a parent night.
