A few years back, I was in Estes Park at the black Canyon Inn. I had to go to a meeting in Fort Collins, so I left and started driving down the ony road you can take out of Black Canyon Inn. Not 1/2 mile from the Inn, I had to stop my car. There was a bull elk and 5-6 females standing in the road. I honked my horn, but they didn't move. I revved the engine and they still didn't move. I edged the car up to them, almost touching the bull, but they continued to stand there. Then I did an incredibly stupid thing. I GOT OUT OF MY CAR, went over to the bull and smacked him on the rump. He turned around, looked at me as if to say, "Oh, you want me to move?", and ambled off, followed by his wives. I went back to my car and started to drive away. Then it hit me what I had done...major shakes and headshaking on my part. Still.... I TOUCHED AN ELK. Are you all excited? Tingley at the prospect of seeing Rubber Stamping on the rubber stamping list? Just kidding! Since there is so much talk of convention pins and laminating, the first project is: Laminated Pins One of the greatest things about going to rubber stamp shows and conventions is the laminated pin swaps. You make a few dozen or so of the same pin and swap with others at the show. Don't forget to put your name and other info on the back, you may end up with a few new stamping buddies! What You'll Need: Favorite stamp- one that's really you but big enough to put a pinback on Ink pads and markers in the colors you choose Cardstock (white if you're going to stamp and color in) Clear contact paper or cold laminate paper (office supply store carries this) Scissors Strapping tape If you're going to have a pin with something hanging from it you'll also need: 1/8 inch hole punch jump rings tweezers or needle nose pliers (or your fingers if you don't have long nails) Step By Step: 1. Stamp images on cardstock. If you're making many pins, I'd advise to stamp all the images first and work in mass production mode. 2. Color as desired. Cut out the images leaving a teeny border. 3. Peel the backing away from a piece of cold laminate paper and lay all images face down on the sticky side of the paper. If you're going to write your name and info on the back, do it now. Be sure to leave space above the info for the pinback. That way the info isn't covered by the pin. Lay another piece of laminate over the first, sticky side down. Rub all the images hard to make the paper stick and so the images show through with no cloudiness. 4. Cut all the images out of the laminate paper. Borders aren't necessary unless you want them. I never leave a border on mine, no problems. 5. If you'll be adding a dangly, use the hole punch to put the hole where you want it. 6. Use the jump rings to assemble your dangly to the pin. 7. Use the strapping tape to affix the pinback to the pin. Hints and Tips: Strapping tape is wonderful for attaching the pinback. E6000 glue is good, if you can stand the smell! But, hot glue will come off after awhile because of the slick surface of the laminate. And when you get home after a hard day of pin trading, the strapping tape can be peeled off if you choose to keep your pins in a binder for storage. This is only one way of assembling pins. Others may have a different way they do theirs. Sunday, Feb 9 was the day. I invited gobs of people, knowing that not everyone would come, and that not even everyone who said they would come would come. The day started at 10:00 a.m.. I made lunch and figured we could call out for pizza for dinner, depending on who was left. I set up the dining room/living room for a stampfest! I brought in all my inks, a wad of papers, and a variety of stamps and other accessories and tools. I didn't know what everyone wanted to do, and I figured that if anyone wanted anything else they could go up and get it. I sat down to stamp at 10:00 and waited for everyone to show up. By 10:45 I was beginning to think that I had thrown a party and NOONE was coming! Ha! Jeannie showed up - she is not on the list, but is the hairdresser of my landlady. She was so excited. WE had talked on the phone but hadn't met before. We began stamping. By noon - 1-ish, more people had arrived. Turtleman (Frank), Wantastamp (Debbie Kaeding), Donna Grady, Nan (Nanstamp) and her friend Rozeann and we were stamping like crazy. I did my usual gush over Stamp n Stick and showed everyone how it works. Turtleman brought a whole tub full of swap cards - his and other people's - and we all ooohhh and aaaahhhed over them. As the day went on more people came: Sandi Marr and Mary Jo, Claire, Susan Barle and her daughter Christina, Kathy Nakata. Heck even my landlord stopped by to see what was going on! Christina is a budding stamper. She is just 12, but is doing a beautiful job. Though she did get a wee bit over enthused with the glitter, and when she and her mom left there was glitter EVERYWHERE! Good thing my cleaning service comes today! LOL. Everyone got tons of stamping and chatting done. I know I got cards done for the mermaid swap and the Celtic swap! By dinner most everyone had cleared out - so for dinner there was just me, Debbie, Donna and Kathy. We stamped til about 8 and then these four wonderful people helped me clean up! The house was almost back to normal by 8:30. I just have to get my stamp room back together. They ended up leaving just as my husband was coming home! Perfect timing! :-) It was so fun! I will be doing a similar thing on April 20th, so if you are interested in coming let me know! I just might limit attendence to those over 20 years old though. Everyone thanked me for my house and my stuff. I loved the company and I know that everyone got lots done. It was so fun! ------------------------------ From: Sheryl Porter Date: Fri, 7 Feb 1997 10:34:49 -0700 Subject: Re: How to Trim Rubber for Halos At 10:13 PM 2/6/97 -0600, you wrote: >On Wed, 5 Feb 1997, Kathy Ward wrote: >> Now....question for all you HALOS users -- since I am just starting with >> this storage method -- I trimmed my unm's and then mounted on the tape & am >> now cutting the tape. Works great...but I'm willing to change >if there is an easier way... > >Darlene Sybert vsa > I think whatever works for you is best. If you have more time than money, don't worry about cramming your stamps as closely together as possible, but many people enjoy the challenge of fitting as many as they can on each sheet of loop tape, kind of like a jig-saw puzzle. As has been mentioned earlier, if your rubber is purchased by the sheet, it really is easier and faster just to peel the paper backing off and lay the sheet on the adhesive. The KAI scissors and even some cheaper scissors will go through both layers at once. You will not save much loop tape even if you cut our images out first, since we put them as closely together as we can when we lay out the plate of stamps. If you choose to trim all the dies first or if they are from many different companies and that's how they come, place as closely together as you can. Perhaps you can leave all the dies on the sheet of loop tape until you have all your stamps arranged, so that you can fill in with smaller stamps before cutting--but you will still have exposed sticky areas. I used to use baby powder on these areas, before the glycerine and Skin So soft lubrication suggestions, but moostamp had a brilliant idea as well. If you are somewhere and you didn't bring along your lubricant and still want to cut out your stamps, wad a Kleenex up and dab it on the exposed sticky areas. Keeps that super-strong adhesive from gumming up your scissors. However, you don't need to use baby powder or Kleenex, if you will lubricate your scissors first, and continue to put a thin coating on as needed. That way you can save all those little sticky pieces on the paper backing, for mounting smaller stamps as you buy them, and even for piecing together for larger stamps. Remember, WD-40 works wonders taking off any build up on your scissors. I = am not talking about those cheaper version of long ago. This stuff in new and hot. They are really 3-D and you don't need special glasses to see them that way. They are so life-like, you want to reach out and touch them. Kids are going to go crazy over these stickers. Make your special someone a card and attach the stickers randomly or arranged (you choose depending on the style card you are making). The stickers are attached to clear plastic backing. If you attached them with some miracle tape or 3M double sided tape, the recipient can then peel the sticker off of the clear plastic backing and use them where they want. Idea #1 - I am going to make a card for my nephew that will use "Addicted to Rubber's" new dinosaur stamps as the background (wait until you see these - I got a sneak preview). Then I am going to attached the 3D Dino Raptor in the center on the front of the card. Then on the inside I will stamp a cute dino with some absurd phrase that will only make sense to a 10=20 year-old. Idea #2 - I am also making another card, using the large keyhole by Ant-ticipations. On the front of the card I am stamping the keyhole and then I am cutting the actual keyhole out. On the inside of the front cover I am mounting the 3D eye sticker, with the eye looking to the outside of the card through the keyhole. I will then use some Non-Sequitor stamps on the inside. They have such dreamy stamps. Idea #3 - You could also use the 3D eye sticker in the center of the Mirror by Judikins, the fish bowl by Rubberstampede, or the crystal ball by Portfolio. If I could figure out a way to scan 3-D, I would, of course, be a millionaire, but since I won't be, I hope my descriptions have given you some ideas for these hot new hologram stickers.
