Before continuing, this information is based on what information I have found an= d believe to be reliable, but is furnished without warranty or guaranty or = any kind. I must disclaim any liability incurred from the use or reliance up= on the same. In short, this is just one stamper's opinion and given to you a= s such. (sorry, had to get that legal stuff out of the way=85) The actual chemical identity is a trade secret, however it's common chemi= cal name is: Polyamide Resin, or generically known as "fatty acid dimer based polyamide resin". It is not listed by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) or OSHA as a hazardous substan= ce or the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as a carcinogen= or potential carcinogen. The DOT classifies the material as "Non-Hazardous.= " The material has a pretty low toxicity rating. Oral-rat LD 50 =3D >15 gm= /kg. There are no standards set for exposure limits, however if it could be ignited, carbon monoxide may be released. For our purposes, inhalation o= f vapors of the molten material could occur, but since it is not listed as = a hazardous substance, there is no exposure limits known. In short, despit= e the anecdotal and infrequent instances of adverse reactions which we have discussed on this board, it is relatively benign stuff. HOWEVER, there are various additives in many of the more exotic powders. Here's some examples: Silver or gold powders may contain 1-15% bronze or aluminum pigments, Pearl colors may contain 5-15% mica flake pigments and White powders may contain 20-60% titanium dioxide. Given the low concentrations of the additives, the material (by most standards) is stil= l relatively safe. With all of this in mind, what is the best advice I can give? If you are going to be embossing just a few cards, you probably don't need to worry about the stuff. There are more risks involved with getting burned by th= e heat gun than any acute or chronic effects of the vapors or dust. =20 If you are going to be doing a lot of embossing and using a lot of powder= s, your best bet would be to make sure you have plenty of fresh air coming i= nto your work area. If possible, break up the routine so that you aren't embossing for long periods of time. Do a little heat embossing, do a lit= tle coloring, and so forth. Small children and those who might have allergic reactions to plastics an= d/or their fumes would be best advised to make sure there is plenty of fresh a= ir coming into the work area. If you have severe allergic reactions, it mig= ht be best not to use it at all. Check with your doctor. If you are dealing with a bunch of the powder, it may be well advised to = wear a two-strap dust mask. The single strap masks will help, but they are no= t approved by any of the safety and health agencies. After you have comple= ted your work, vacuum the work area to pick up any spilled material. NOTE: When you need to ventilate a work area, concentrate on getting fres= h air to the work zone and not necessarily getting a fan or closed loop air conditioning system to blow the ambient air around. The design of your ho= me and/or work area determines how you do that and its difficult to describe what to do, except=85get fresh air to you - that's the key. And finally, don't ingest the material, be careful of the hot molten mate= rial and avoid contact with sources of heat used to melt the powder. There se= em to be more injuries associated with burns while heat embossing than with exposure to fumes. I hope this helps "clear the air" for many of us. I am certain that if y= ou want more information, you can contact the manufacturer and/or distributo= r for their Material Safety Data Sheet. It may take some telephone work, b= ut the information is available if desired. Most of them are "scared" to ask questions at first -- for fear of sounding like a newbie ! SSOOOOO .... Here are some general guidelines for a swap -- they are not the RULES ... just GUIDELINES . When in doubt, ask the hostess ! Hope this helps you all !!! General Instructions for a Swap 1) Read instructions carefully -- when in doubt, ask the hostess 2) Make identical cards (or specified art) in the specified quantity. If the swap says 6/5 or 6 for 5 this means that you make 6 of the art and you will receive 5 back. It is "understood" that the extra is for the hostess to keep. 3) Sometimes the hostess will say notecards, bookmarks, pins, magnets, or "anything goes". The most common submission will be a standard card size piece of art. 4) Pay attention to the "due" date or the "postmark" date. Some hostess allow extra time by stating that the cards are due postmarked by a certain date. The downside to this is that if you live far away from the hostess, your cards will take longer to arrive; and ultimately you can hold the swap. Always try to have your cards in before the due date or postmark date. It typically takes packets up to a week to arrive at their destination, but sometimes the post office takes longer. 5) Pay attention to what type of "return" the hostess is asking for. As a hostess myself I average out-of-pocket expenses of $7-10 per swap. This means that people don't include enough postage to get the packet home -- remember that not everyone is making the same thing you are, and it may take more postage or a larger envelope to return art. On average, a 9 x 12 is the best size envelope to send. This means that postage for the return will be a MINIMUM of $1.01, but usually a bit more. Then again, sometimes the 5 x 7 envelope works too; and this cost an average ov $.78 to return, but sometimes more. Most hostess realize you can't predict this sorta thing and they as for "SASE plus extra postage". This means Self-Addressed-Stamped-Envelope (with same postage as your existing packet will take to make it to them, plus a few extra stamps -- 2 extras usually get the job done fine). Not all hostess return unused postage or $$ -- that is a common practice. Sometimes people ask you to re-use the envelope -- remember that this isn't always possible, so I don't recommend trying it. You never know what the post office will do to a package -- and the person usually has the envelope so taped up you can't get in it -- or its been re-used sooo many times already, its a mess. 6) When you send your art to the hostess, you do NOT include a separate stamped envelope for each art piece -- it is one large envelope for everything --- unless the hostess directs otherwise. 7) Newbies are always welcome -- and there are specific swaps for newbies only. 8) It is generally accept practice that the artwork must have at LEAST one stamp. Some swaps require more than one; and every hostess is different. There has been some discussion of late regarding clip-art images --- check with your hostess before you sign-up to be sure of his/her take on it. Each swap has a theme -- just be sure to stay within the theme. 9) ALWAYS email your hostess privately when discussing the swap -- including signing up for it. Not every hostess is subscribed to the lists at all hours. It also helps cut down on the list mail. If you're going to be late, or have to drop -- email the hostess IMMEDIATELY so you can save her the headache of tracking you down. Communication is very important. 10) And last, but not least, if you have a question -- ask the hostess .... or as the list for an opinion -- we've got a few opinions out there ! :-) Happy Stamping !!!
