Nelda! Don't feel guilty, I loved your card. The Alice and Mad Hatter in bed stamp is very funny but the addition of the four shocked observers simply *made* the card! :) Stampers should feel free to experiment more in black and white. We tend to fall into the trap of thinking coloring == more time spent == better card. I've spent HOURS on a swap where each card was b&w and the masking alone just about killed me. I couldn't help but think afterwards, "Geez, everyone is going to think I slacked here by doing this in black and white." Now I regret not keeping one of those cards because I wish I had one for my scrapbook. > Now HERE'S THE BAD NEWS!!!: > In digging through my catalogs, my best educated guess is that It came from > Alice in Rubberland. But i think this image is DISCONTINUE!!! *sob* I'll send them email via their homepage and ask about the bed stamp you used. I'm afraid I'll have to bite the bullet and buy some Alice In Rubberland stamps even though they're mounted-only and have a snotty copyright policy (as opposed to a polite non-angel copyright policy which I don't mind much). I think they're the source of some other Alice stamps I've been lusting after as well. I wonder if they realize how many stampers vow never to buy stamps from them simply because they're so *rude* when stating their copyright policy? I've heard that from more than a few people here on the list. Hmmm. It is very time consuming, but the basic steps are as follows: 1. Trace the image using a calligrapy pen and ink. Usually white or gold ink is used, but I'm seeing more patterns using different colors of inks. 2. Peferating - punching holes in the vellum using a needle tool. There are several different tools - single needle, double needle, triple needle, four needle, a flower designed one (that I just got today) and some others. To perferate, you leave the vellum on the pattern and push the needle tool straight down thru both the vellum and the patten. (In most of the books that I have there is section that says you are allowed to photocopy the designs for your own use in making cards without violating any copy rights.) After the perferating is done, you can cut out designs, but that is the last step - you want to make sure that the strength of the paper is not compromised before embossing. 3. Color the design - there are alot of different ways to color. You can paint the design on either the front or back (painting on the back gives a smoother look to the card). You can use dorsing colors (an oil based cayon) on the back - this is colored on and spread with a Q-tip to even out the color. You can use water color pencils (the water color pencils come in sets of 2 types of pencils. One is an oil based pencil used for a base, it is also colored on and spread with a Q-tip. It allows the vellum to accept the water color better. The water color pencils seem similar to the Staedtler pencils that I have, but I have not tried to interchange them yet. The color is applied by wetting a paint brush and touching it to the pencil to pick up color and painting on the vellum. 4. Embossing (this is dry embossing). There are a couple different size embossing tools depending on the effect that you want, but are pretty much the same as you would use for any dry embossing. The trick to embossing is to rub gently and gradually add pressure. Embossing breaks the fibers in the vellum, causing it to turn white and making a raised area. If you emboss to hard from the start, you end up with black marks that don't go away and the paper tears. Embossing is usually done on the back, but I have gotten some pretty textured flowers by embossing on both the front and back. 5. Cutting - there are many different ways to cut out the designs. You can cut our whole sections for a lacy effect, the four hole needle tool makes a square that when cut properly, makes an X, you can use the single tool to punch holes all around your card, then tear along the dotted line like a postage stamp to make a lacy border. 6. All that's left is to put your card together. I usually poke little holes in the fold of the vellum and the card stock and tie them together. Depening on the look I want, sometimes I put the vellum and card stock together (folded closed) and peferate thru all four layers at the same the time so that the entire card has the same lacy look. These instructions will make very little sense if you have never seen a Pergamano card. At one time there was a web site with a card on it, but I can't seem to find it now. Pergamano is beautiful - but since it can take so long, I usually make these cards for people who I know will appreciate all the time that I have put into it. I buy my supplies from Eugenia Ahern at Eughenia's Eclectibles, her URL is: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/ahearne/newslett.htm Eugenia is a wonderful person and very patient. If you do contact her, please let her know that I sent you. If you need any other info, please Email, I will be happy to share my addition with anyone.
