I have been doing Pergamano for about a year. Pergamano is now also being marketed by another company and is called Tarjeteria - the techniques for the two are very similiar. Now for a shamless plug - anyone living in the Dallas area - I have several Pergamano cards on display at Tejas Stamps in Garland and will be teaching a Tarjeteria class on May 31. I am very honored that they think enough of my work to ask me teach. OK, now the instructions: 1. Trace the image using a calligrapy pen and ink onto parchment paper. The traditional colors are gold and white, but I'm seeing more use of other colors. I use post it tape to hold the parchment to the pattern. 2. Perferating - punching holes in the parchment using a needle tool. There are several different tools - single needle, double needle, triple needle, four needles, a flower tool and some others. To perferate, you leave the parchment on the pattern and push the needle tool straight down thru both the parchment and the pattern. After perferating is done, you can cut out designs but that is the last step - you want to make sure that the strength of the paper is not compromised before embossing. 3. Color the design - there are alot of different ways to color. Remove the parchment from the pattern. You can paint the design on either the front or back (painting on the back gives a smoother look to the card). You can use dorsing colors (an oil based crayon) on the back - this is colored on and spread with a Q-tip to even out the color. You can use water color pencils - the water color pencils come in sets of 2 types of pencils. One is an oil based pencil used for a base, it is also colored on and spread with a Q-tip. It allows the parchment to accept the water color better and helps prevent the paper from warping from the water. The second type is the actual water color pencil. The color is applied by wetting a paint brush and touching it to the pencil to pick up color and painting it over the base color. 4. Embossing (this is dry embossing) - Embossing breaks the fibers in the parchment causing it to turn white and making a raised area. The trick to embossing is to rub gently and gradually add pressure. If you emboss too hard from the start, you end up with balck marks that don't go away and the paper tears. Embossing is usually done on the back, but I have gotten some pretty textured flower by embossing on both the front and the back. 5. Cutting - there are many different ways to cut out the designs. You can cut out whole sections for a lacy effect, the four hole needle tool makes a square that when cut properly, makes an X, you can use the single tool to punch holes all around the card, then tear along the dotted line like a postage stamp to make a lacy border. 6. All that's left is to put your card together. I usually poke little holes in the fold of the parchment and the card stock and tie them together. Choosing the color card stock is the hardest part - you get a different look to the card depending on the color you use. I have also used printed tissue paper to back the parchment. I made a baby card, using a very simple border pattern, on the parchment I just wrote the baby's name and vital stats and the parchment and backed it with a baby print, turned out very nice. These instructions will make very little sense it you have never seen a pergamano card. You can see one at the site below (this is the only example that I have been able to find). My guess is that this card is colored using doring colors, all of the white lines appear to be embossed and the outside edge is done by perferating around the border and tearing off the excess. - ------------------------------ From: Debby Gribbin Pergamano is a parchment paper craft. You use a pen and ink (like calligraphy) to draw (or in my case, trace) a design on parchment paper. Then you embellish it by dry embossing, which creates a raised, white area and/or perferating designs with a needle tool. You can also add color by painting, using colored pencils or oil pastels. It's hard to explain without seeing it. I posted a note a couple days ago that I had finally gotten some images up on the web - the second and third card are Pergamano. You can see them at: http://people.delphi.com/batmom/cards.html This page isn't finished, I need to add text to explain the techniques used in these cards. The images are too big and it takes a LONG time to load, but this will give you an idea of what it looks like. - ---------------------------------- From: julia sidebottom Pergamano is the art of taking parchment paper and creating embossed images on the parchment. Pergamano is embellished by painting, dorsing, or perferating parts of the embossed image. Many of the completed compositions of Pergamano that you will see have a fine "lacy" look to them... What is really great is that RS's can easily be incorporated into pergamano designs... this is something that I am having a lot of fun doing right now... The rubber stamp images can be used as a pattern that becomse the primary or a secondary image for your card... as well as verse stamps are a great addition to a pergamano creation. There are various sizes of stylus' that can be used to give a different effect when embossing the paper. When it comes to the painting of parts of your composition there are many ways to proceed. Many compositions will not need any painting at all... while others may require a lot of different paints and colors to get the desired effects. The interesting thing is that a composition rarely needs more than a single drop of paint to do any given part of a composition... So when it comes to paints for these projects I use many many many of the fabric paints that I have here.... mostly scribbles . I can put a single drop on a paper palet and go for it! "Dorsing"... is taking a dorsing crayone and blending the color into the parchment paper... it is applied like a crayon. You would then take a tissue or soft cloth and rub out the dorsing to give a muted effect to the parchment that adds just a hint of color. I am not giving the order that these steps are done in only because I am thinking about these steps off the top of my head here ... Doing Pergamano is not difficult at all however it is time consuming... I can spend hours on a single composition... I never expect to get more than 2-3 done in a single day if I am lucky... but they sure are well worth the efforts. I know there are others here that can give you a much better than I can... but hopefully this has given you and idea of what Pergamano is about. - -------------------------------- WarmHugs Angelhrt cloud9@mail.execpc.com http://www2.netcom.com/~smith25/cloud9.html *************************************************************************** When I've had troubled times, that had me down on my knees... there's always been someone to come along and comfort me...a kind word from a stranger to lend a helping hand....a phone call from friend just to say "I understand"....and ain't it kinda funny.....at the dark end of the road...someone lights the way...with just a single ray of hope... You take your stamp--like a sun-- and stamp it on glossy paper with embossing ink only. Do not use any ep! Ink up your brayer with DYE based ink, and roll it all over the card. The stamped image will magically appear as a blank in a sea of color. This is where it gets the name resist. The stamped image resists the dye based ink. You can use a sunset/sunrise rainbow ink pad and then stamp mountains in black and have the sun rising or setting with the mountains. This is a beautiful technique! I suppose you could do it with watercolor and clear ep. I haven't tried that yet. I haven't tried any watercolor. I hope this helps. StamperCat>^,,^< - --------------------- From: rubberjunkie@juno.com (Tracy L Rivera) It is true that there is a resist technique called resist where you just use the embossing ink. Gives a kind of batik look. It has been around for years. Where have you been, Tracy?! Really though, the first time I heard about it, I thought they had forgotten a step, but that is it. - ---------------------------- From: barefootstamper@juno.com (Tracy K May) Are you sure about the "do not use any ep" part? I would think that with embossing ink being as slow as it is to dry, that when you brayer over top of it, it would smear, but I've never tried it this way, so I don't really know. I have tried it *with* clear ep, and I love the effect! After you stamp your image and emboss it with the clear ep, you can brayer over top of it, or just color over top of the whole card with markers. Then take a paper towel and wipe the ink off of the embossed parts, revealing the color (or lack thereof) underneath the embossed part. It is easy and beautiful! My kind of project! :-D - ------------------------------ From: hackneym@HUB.ofthe.NET (Mary Hackney) Actually, the embossing ink doesn't smear, just resists the colored ink. - -------------------------- From: wsmith12@juno.com (Winabeth L Smith) Yep - she's right - I have a card where I stamp a jellyfish in clear embossing ink and then brayer over the images with dye based ink. Gives a real neat but faded soft image. Sometimes you almost have to "wait" until the image appears. - ------------------------- From: happyrubber@juno.com (Ginny Newman) Both methods are known as resists, but the no ep method is refered to more as "ghosting" an image. Although in one book, it was called a resist. I've tried both and thing both are wonderful! Each had it's own unique style and both have wonderful results. - ---------------------------- From: kayelynne@juno.com (Kaye Lynne Ingold) I don't know how, but the embossing ink "dries" somehow on the glossy paper. Once you brayer it, there is no residue of the ink on the glossy paper. Has anybody tried doing this technique on matte card stock? StamperCat>^,,^< - --------------------------- From: Barbara Holl Yes, I've tried it but it didn't do very well with matte and light colors. I didn't try it with dark colors, but I think the glossy is the best. - --------------------------- From: Marsha.Braymen@ORYX.COM I've done the resist technique on matte card stock and it worked very well. It really is a very simple, but wonderful idea. - ---------------------- WarmHugs Angelhrt cloud9@mail.execpc.com http://www2.netcom.com/~smith25/cloud9.html *************************************************************************** When I've had troubled times, that had me down on my knees... there's always been someone to come along and comfort me...a kind word from a stranger to lend a helping hand....a phone call from friend just to say "I understand"....and ain't it kinda funny.....at the dark end of the road...someone lights the way...with just a single ray of hope... Fancy That! a wonderful masterpiece - ------------------------------ From: AlphaBecky I got to stop by The Calligraphy House (Yippee - a real stamp store) about a week ago and they were demoing a white ink usually used for calligraphy. It can be used to "paint" in areas on dark cardstock. My favorite use that they showed was on vellum. They stamped something that should be white on vellum (like a bunny or snowman...) and then on the back, they painted on this white ink, filling in the image. You think the image on vellum is white anyway, but the effect was very striking. It really made the bunny stand out from the rest of the vellum. Worth a try to see if what you have will work for this. - ---------------------------------- From: Bonnie Lass 1. The 3 kinds of vellum are Heavy, Mottled Medium and Lightweight. You can emboss on any of these papers, but you need to be careful, as the paper will "melt" and curl if you get the heat gun too close! They each have a useful place in your art pieces..... 2. Heavy is not heavy like cardstock, but heavier than writing paper. It can be used for dry embossing which is absolutely gorgeous! It has many applications, but that one is my favorite! 3. Medium Mottled is called mottled because it has little splotches of white on white making it look a lot like parchment, but still translucent. I used this in a few RAK cards for the inside of the card. I embossed the words, some little hearts and the deckled edge bottom with silver embossing powder. I tied it into the card with silver cord trim. 4. Lightweight is a sheer, very lightweight paper. You can use this for the outside of your card, over your cardstock which has been stamped in an all over design. The artwork will show through. You can also then emboss the same design just once in a coordinating color. Then tie it onto the card with a thin cording or thick thread. - -------------------------- From: "Christine L. Cox" I got a lot of really great ideas for gluing vellum and I thought that the whole group would like to know. 1. Elmer's glue (white) 2. Dryline temporary adhesive 3. Elmer's glue stick 4. Elmer's spray adhesive 5. Avery disappearing color glue stick 6. Double stick tape under the image Thanks everyone. One of these is bound to work. - ---------------------------- From: ShariV@aol.com I have used the tombow double-stick tape and Dryline, too. I hear the Perfect Paper Adhesive is supposed to be good for this since it dries clear. - --------------------------- WarmHugs Angelhrt cloud9@mail.execpc.com http://www2.netcom.com/~smith25/cloud9.html *************************************************************************** When I've had troubled times, that had me down on my knees... there's always been someone to come along and comfort me...a kind word from a stranger to lend a helping hand....a phone call from friend just to say "I understand"....and ain't it kinda funny.....at the dark end of the road...someone lights the way...with just a single ray of hope...
