Eventually, I clean em...usually when there is a dirty one I want to use. As Feathers said, its doesn't affect them and, in fact, seems to make the bold ones work a bit better. A brayer is a wonderful tool. In fact, I haven't found any other way to use the finely detailed Magenta stamps than with a brayer on glossy card stock. The shape is reminiscent of a paint roller (for rolling paint on your walls?), except that the handle is only about 4" long and the roller part is only about 6" long. The roller is made of soft rubber (there's also a sponge type for a "mottled" effect and a hard rubber type). Depending on the look you want you can use glossy paper for a very evenly covered, bright colored look (in fact, I use this rather than using colored glossy paper. I just make my own colors) or you can use it on matte paper incorporating the texture of the paper (if any) into the final look of the card. You can use this tool in many, many ways: 1. Run it through your solid color dye ink pad (being careful to cover it with ink on all sides and end to end, otherwise you will get white lines in your work where this is no ink). Then run your brayer all over your card stock in all directions. Try not to run off the edges of the card stock too much because you create a line in the ink with the edge of the card and then that line appears on the card stock in the next pass. 2. Run it through a Kaleidacolor ink pad (always going in the same direction and as close to the same place on the card as possible so as not to mix the ink colors on your ink pad). Then you can do several different things on the card. You can either run your brayer in only one direction for a striped look or you can run in one direction and then again at 90 degrees. Some people do this to make a plaid or madras look. You can also just run your brayer through your Kaleidacolor pad and then in various directions all over the card stock. I have a friend who couldn't believe how fast she could turn out beautiful cards by just running an inked brayer in various directions over the card. She burned through the card stock that day! This technique is the basis of Joseph's coat (it's the color of ink you see through the stamped image). 3. Ink up the brayer with a solid color of dye ink and then use the brayer to ink your stamp. Then stamp as normal. This is how you ink up a Magenta stamp as well as other finely detailed stamps. 4. Ink up a brayer with a Kaleidacolor pad (remembering to only ink in one direction in order to keep the colors in your ink pad pure) and then run the brayer over the stamp in various directions. This gives a beautiful variegated effect to the card. A caveat here is to be sure you don't make too many passes over the stamp because then the colors will come out "muddy" or even black when you stamp the image. While Kaleidacolors color combinations are beautiful, I've started making some combos for myself starting with an uninked Kaleidacolor pad. I'm going to make a Christmas colored one today (red, green, royal blue . . . ) 5. Ink up a stamp in dye or pigment ink (depending on if you're using glossy or matte paper) and then stamp the brayer. Then run the brayer over the card stock. This gives some of those beautiful washed looking backgrounds that you see. You can either do it over and over again (even using different colors or different shades of ink) or you can just do it once or twice for a less busy look. Be sure to test this on a scratch piece of paper first so that you see how dark the ink is. You might not want that first, very inky, dark impression on the card if you're going for a light, washed background. 6. Put Liquid Applique in lines across your brayer and then bray all over your card stock. You'll probably have to do this twice to get good coverage. Heat with your heat tool to dry the LA and puff it slightly. Repeat 2 more times. When you're done, suede paper! Great for southwest cards. You can stamp right on it with dye ink! Very dramatic! That's all I can think of for now. I'm sure I'll think of more as soon as I hit the send key. Does anyone else have any creative uses for the brayer? In short (ha! too late!), it's definitely one of my favorite tools. Oh, it tends to get stained from darker colors (especially blues and black) but don't worry about it. I've never had that transfer to a card. Just be sure to clean the brayer in between each application of ink. Cheers!!! Christine P.S. I'll be changing Internet Providers in the next few days. I had so much fun it nearly killed me. The most fun was meeting people from the list and the dinner at Azteca Friday night. I tried to keep a list of people I met from the list to remember faces, etc. There were somewhere around 35 including 4 that I had met last year. There were so many neat vendors of paper, book arts supplies, stamps, and art suppies that my money went really fast. I had lists, but pared them way down as I had to save money for the bus tour the next day. The workshops I took were wonderful, Shereen LaPlantz taught an all day class on making several books. Lots of great ideas/techniques. Michael Jacobs Friday class was really good also. He is very high energy and is always pushing you to get finished so you can start on something else. He has great ideas on using recycled materials in your art. We made all kinds of mailers and of course I bought all the kits, too. The great thing about both of the workshops was the ideas they generated. During Artfest on Saturday, I took all 3 of Shereen's demos/workshops. They were very good also. I'm not sure I absorbed as much there because my brain was on overload. The bus tour was great. The best part was Alexanders Beads. They had a great selection of beads and charms. My favorites were the unusual charms of goddesses, hands etc. Bought quite a few for earrings. Elliot Bay Books had a wonderful book called" The Journey is the Destination". It is the journal of a young photojournalist who was stoned to death in Somalia in 1993 at the age of 22. His journal contains collage, drawings. etc. His mom had it published just recently. It's just fascinating to me. Last Monday, I flew to Las Vegas where my husband was for a meeting Spent most of my time lounging around in the room recovering from Artfest. One day I did make books just to be sure I remembered how. Thursday we rented a car and visited Stamp Oasis and VLVS. Bought the 4 seasons womwn at SO. VLVS had square black linen envys, Kai scissors, sizes of Miracle tape I didn't have, Vellum A-2 envys, and a wonderful light sage green mulberry paper with leaf inclusions. They had lots of other great things, too, but I was too tired to care at that point. Anyway, I'm now back at the computer trying to get caugt up on my email and the Non Sequitir swap. It's good to be back. I used this method for the brayer swap.... I used vivid black to brayer over the colors. I was working on card stock, definitely not coated. I used a dye based rainbow, can't remember which one right now. I was quite pleased with the intensity of the color, but had some strange things happening when I wiped the vivid black off of the clear EP. In some spots, the ep sorta ran together so the image was blurred. It added an interesting effect since I was using a leaf stamp, but I couldn't figure out why it was happening.... - --------------------------------- From: Susanne haggett@students.uiuc.edu I discovered that this technique was stunning at 9 pm and oring at 9am...when I had just finished stamping, brayering, etc., the colors were so vibrant against the black - such a dramatic look! The next morning, after the black ink had had time to dry to a dull, dark gray, well, it just wasn't the same. I tried coating with Krylon Crystal Clear, to no avail.I used a black Marvy pad....is this where we have that conversation again about "How black is your black inkpad?"? - ---------------------------- This message was from GGMCCOR@aol.com I find that blacks in general turn grayish on glossy. I tried the "Joseph's Coat" technique on regular matte stock and really liked the effect. The black stayed black and the shiny bright raised embossing was a nice contrast against the matte black. I also did a variety of pinks, lavenders and blues and brayered over that with violet; yellows, oranges and pinks under red, etc. This technique also works nicely if you sponge. Feathers - ---------------------------------- From: marilyn@fgi.net (Marilyn) I too better get out of the lurking mode, I tried the neon embossing with stampscape stamps and the calypso pad, then brayered over this with ultra marine vivid and the results were stunning. I do have a question though, on my test sample I used black but when I sprayed with a sealer the embossing started to peel off. Did I spray it to soon or is it the powder I used? I used ulta high gloss clear from VLVS. Has this happened to anyone else? TIA - --------------------------------- From: dgrady@sirius.com (Donna Grady) Last night I was playing around with the Josephs Coat technique and came across a slight variation to this wonderful technique. Some of you may already know and have done this but it was new to me so I will share how I did it. I took a bold image stamp (Fish from Posh Impressions) and stamped it on a color box rainbow pigment pad (the one with all shades of purples) and stamped it on white coated paper. I embossed with clear. Then I took a Kaleidacolor rainbow pad (Caribbean Sea I think it is called) and brayered this all over the background. This rainbow pad is all the green shades. Mounted this on blue paper 1/4" all around. Next I took another piece of paper a little bigger in size and stamped another kind of smaller fish all over using the same Kaleidacolor pad. I mounted this on chartreuse paper. Then I took the Josephs Coat stamped image already mounted on blue paper and mounted it on top of the little fishes paper. It came out pretty. It is new to me because up until this point I was only doing Josephs Coat with brayering a colorful rainbow background in dye in all over, then stamping an image in clear and embossing in clear (to have this background show through) then brayering all over with black or prussian blue. This way I just did allows you to have the image in one rainbow pad color and the background in another. I personally love the HALOS system. It uses acrylic blocks and hook and loop tape. I store my um in 3" 3 ring binders. I save so much space. For cutting your um I would recommend KAI scissors. They cu through the rubber like melted butter. Tupperstamper This message was from "Edward Sim" - -- The rubberstampers mailing list is proudly sponsored by the Dueling Modems Arts & Crafts Forum. I've used both. You can then roll the brayer over your paper in various ways to get various effects. Just play with it. Keep your practice sheets, tho, since they can end up as great background papers with thin-medium borders.... You can put strings or rubberbands around the brayer and then roll it in ink and then roll onto paper...neat effects. You can put lace or a doily over paper and brayer over that. You end up with the lacy look on your paper. You can use single color for this or rainbow, depending upon the look you want. You can use the brayer to ink up shallow cut stamps, like some of the Magenta stamps. - ----------------------- To: Euni Stamper I saw that on her website. I want one but only because I'm on an acrylic kick right now--I don't know why but I love the stuff. Anyway wouldn't it work like the hard rubber brayer? Someone posted that they didn't like the hard rubber because it would slip 'n slide. Hope this helps some. - ------------------------------------ From: Teal-in-florida No it doesn't work the same at all - I just took three classes from Suze thsi weekend, at Orlando and the only use for the acrylic one that she has found is for backgrounds - and it does NOT go on smoothly - it skips - - its an inerestign effect if you like it; but is nowhere near as useful as a rubber or even sponge brayer. - --------------------------------- WarmHugs Angelhrt cloud9@execpc.com ********************************************************* God gives us memories so we might have roses in December ********************************************************* This message was from "Angelhrt" - -- The rubberstampers mailing list is proudly sponsored by the Dueling Modems Arts & Crafts Forum.
