You stamp the thing supposed to hold the water on this, and carefully cut the opening just inside the lines; you can angle the cut just a wee bit, so the opening is a little bigger on the bottom than the top--this helps disguise the foam. You do any embellishing, too. You stamp what you want to be seen through the opening on a piece of card the same size as the foam core; it helps to trace through the opening lightly onto the backing before you stamp. do any coloring, embossing, etc. on the backing. The backing can be either a folded card or a single sheet, depending on whether you want a postcard or a regular card. If it's folded, and you are putting a message inside, do that. Now you make the water bag with your seal-a-meal--sealing only one end, of course. Make the bag a little larger all around than your opening, so it won't pop through, and so you can fasten it down. Into the bag you put about a tablespoon or two (no more) of water, mineral oil, or glycerin--just one of these, and I prefer the mineral oil--and add your glitter or confetti. You don't need much. Try to get most of the air to the top of the bag, and then burp as much out as you can without splilling the contents; seal the top. Make sure the bag doesn't leak. If it leaks, fix the leak or make a new bag. when the bag is ready, stick it to the foam core, on the side without the stamped image, with some double sticky. Then stick the backing on, being sure to line everything up carefully. Use double sticky for this--it works the best. Be sure you get the outer edges well stuck. You can then put ribbon around to disguise the foam, if you want to. It is best to mail these in small boxes, or between two pieces of foam core. You can make an envelope for the whole thing by placing the card katty-cornered in the middle of a big enough piece of paper, and then folding the corners in to make flaps, which you then stick to each other with your handy double sticky. Have fun! It's not as difficult as it sounds! I would experiment with making a bag or two before doing the real card, if this is your first effort. Cheers, ex fast posto (Nan) - ------------------------------------------- Watercards are basically cards with a pouch of water with stuff floating in it. Usually done on an ocean/fish theme. Like a fishbowl. Or I have used a baby bottle stamp and put hair gel in it with baby confetti floating around You use a Seal-a-Meal to seal in the water or gel, and then construct the card around foam board. More than that I can't say without getting into construction techniques. Sandi Marr taught me how to do them, so she is my guru. From: stampatti@juno.com - ------------------------------------------ A word of warning- don't send water cards to cold climates! I sent a birthday seal-a-meal card to my brother and sealed it in a ziploc, put bubble wrap waround it, put extra postage on it, had it hand cancelled at my P.O. but when he got it, all he got was a mess. He couldn't even tell what it was supposed to be- the dye ink from the vivid pad had run all over everything. He lives in Minnesota and our theory was that it froze then thawed and exploded. So, I'm not too keen on sending one to my parents in WI anymore. Maybe something with a different viscosity (sorry, I'm a civil engineer) would alleviate the freeze/thaw problem. - -deb Debra Egle-Nielsen egle@raphael.vis.colostate.edu - --------------------------------------- OK...my version of the watercard.... You don't need a seal-a-meal...and you don't need foamcore. These are nice but not necessary. I use heavyweight clear vinyl....iron 3 sides with an iron, a good 1/4" seal...fill with water, gel, anything my mind cooks up at the time...and then iron the 4th side. Make a good 1/4" seal with my iron....and it will make it through the mail. (Hubby Dale and I tested this...each stood on the envelope to see how much weight it would take. I won't give you the details, because when I told someone this on aol...they laughed for 30 minutes and got the hiccups.) Use a regular cardstock card...cut the window you want the water pouch to show through. If you want, you can back the pouch with more card stock...but I find it fun to let the back side of the card to show through...just stamp something that goes with your front-of-the card stamping and the stuff in your watercard water pouch. Glue? Good ole rubber cement....just coat the edges of the vinyl envelope and the edges of your opening...let dry...then press together. Rubber cement acts as a contact glue when done this way. Your water envelope will stay! Ellen :}> (Evo) - --------------------------------- How about vodka - hate to see it go to this purpose but it would probably work! - your recepient could indulge - it would make a great holiday gesture - or how about new year's eve - we could all open at 11:59 and drink in the new year together June E. Koziar junekoz@nni.com (use vodka instead of water to get around the freezing/bursting problem when it's being mailed.) - ------------------------------------- Add abit of rubbing alcohol in it. That will help it not to freeze. I know to make a home made ice pack you put 2/3 water to 1/3 rubbing alcohol. Food coloring for fun and freeze it in a zip lock baggie. It never freezes solid...but gets to be that gel like substance. I think that might help your water card problem. :) Lisa - ------------------------------------------------- Well- I have made a few- with both water and gel in the packet. They are simply- a shaker card...but instead of using the transparent film over the "window" and putting confetti between the layers of card stock and foam core- you use a seal-a-meal bag. Seal it to be as small as you can make it to fit in your window. You can put water, colored water, hair jell, glycerine in it and add your confett. I have the cutest one with blue hair gel and fish in it...the stamp arouond it is a swimming pool and a LARGE woman diving into it. People just love it. Does this help ? Oh yes...you can usually pick the seal-a-meal up at a resale shop or garage sale, next to the blender that you want to use for paper making. Diana - ------------------------------- This is what I do. I take the quart sized seal a meal bags and cut them in 4ths. This gives me 4 equal size bags. You have to seal all but one side. If I'm using the water globe, I just use water. Be careful of the glitter you use. Some is very sharp and will puncture. I like the prisma for the really pretty pink and gold shimmer, but for snow you need something else, the Jemmy (can't remember the name) confetti works. There is one that resembles snow. If its to put fish confetti or the like, use a thicker (mineral oil isn't thick enough) hair gel. You only need a little, maybe about 3 or so tablespoons. I've done the card two ways. I don't use foam core. I don't think you need to. Take a quarter sheet of card stock. Stamp your fishbowl or water globe and cut it out. Make sure it fits well on the folded card. Stamp the image you want to show through the opening. Then glue or tape the bag of water or gel over the image. Then glue the piece with the fishbow or water globe over that. That is how I did that water globe that was in the action swap. Hope this was understandable, and ask if anything is unclear. Take care and God Bless, Rubberbreeze~~~~ - --------------------------------------- Well me and my sister went to a class and this is what we did. We used a tri fold card. Stamped on the front of the card and color. My card was a little boy sitting on a pier with his feet in the water. My sister did a snow globe. You cut on the middle of the 1st card. Then on the inside 3rd panel you stamped some more that would go with the front. On my I stamped a frog jumping in the water and some more trees. In the snowglobe they stamped a scene. Then we took a seal-a-meal bag and put a little water in it with some glitter and then used a seal-a-meal to seal the bag. Then we used double sided tape and put inside the middle panel and then seal that panel closed to the front with more double sided sticky tape. When the card is closed and you look through the middle you see a scene on the other side. You can open the card then and have some kind of saying or something on the inside. I hope I explained this okay. You almost have to see it. StampinSis - ----------------------------------- I make water cards using my seal-a-meal and JM Heavy Duty Page protectors. Yooy just cut the size a little larger than you need seal 3 sides. Mix up clear hair gel (I use DEP) add any glitter or food color you want and thin with a little, I mean little, water. Spoon into the pocket. Seal the 4th side. I'm quite pleased with the results. Here's what I did: I grabbed a wad of the clay and added a few drops of acrylic paint (coral) and *mashed* it up all together. The clay turned into a beautiful coral color with a few streaks of white clay that didn't take the paint. I rolled out the clay to the desired thickness and stamped an image with black Color Box ink. I then cut a square around my stamped image (making a pin) with one of my Friskar scissor. I baked it for 20 minutes in the oven (250 degrees) let it cool and colored with colored penicils. Wow! It turned out great! The last thing I did was seal it and glued on a pin back. If only I did this before the last convention... Hugs, StampnRN - ----------------------------------------- I took a little class in this and learned a few things. Last week I actually made some pins, and loved the results. Have to make more, so I can stand to give them away! I did the usual roll out and stamp, let dry, and color routine. Did bunny, bird, cat, and flower pins. You can make a perfect circle pin by pressing a wine goblet, etc., into the clay around your stamp. We were taught: to air-dry the pieces overnight or longer, turning the pieces over in the middle of the time so the back dries, too. to sand off the edges with sandpaper, after it dries, for a smooth finish. to color the edges, too, with a marking pen, to make the pin look more finished. to use a lacquer spray, not an acrylic one, to seal, as the acrylic yellows it. Spray the pieces inside a cardboard box, out of doors, for best results. To add a couple of drops of water to the left-over clay and store it in the package, inside a plastic bag, in the refrigerator. I found that I had to spray and dry, spray and dry FOUR times to get my pins really shiny. You can make lots and lots of pins from one package of paper clay-- it really goes a loooong way. I had never seen one before, so obviously I didn't make any. But the list members gave me one of theirs anyway! And it was great getting to meet you!! Susan Debbie Kay - She stamped a dinosaur and had "Which way to the stamps?" hanging beneath it. Mikayla - This is Debbie Kay's daughter. I thought she was so cool! And Debbie Kay is lucky to have her. Anyway, her pin was 2 puffins. She also had some cool Care Bear pins. Stampie - Her pin was a smiling sun that was gold and copper in color on brown paper. Phil - He had actual um rubberstamps that he had put on loop. The pin had the hook. So I can stamp with this pin! Oh, it was one of Phil's own designs, too. Sharon - She gave me 3 of her pins. One is a stamped teddy bear with a yo-yo tummy made out of Halloween print material, and he is carrying a trick or treat bag. Two is a stamped ghost and he is holding a real candy bar, which has a Halloween stamped label on it. Three is a saying "I'm a rubber stamp collector" with 3 rubberstamp confetti's hanging off it.
