I posted this yesterday, but since we were down, it didn't go through, BUT how lucky you all are! Our neighbor, Bill, stopped by again last night and I asked him a few more questions. Apparently the HARDEST part is getting the right paper. He develops his own but maybe a special photography store could help whoever out. As far as the paints, you basically have to buy the whole huge set, because you'll NEVER get the same mixture again if you mix (sorta like painting a painting you know). He prefers Marshalls brand paints. There are some other manufacturers, but Marshalls does ONLY paint. He said there are several books out, just take a look in a photography store. One he mentioned was "Retouching Photographs" which he found at the local library. Also, check out your local photography store, they often hold classes on the topic. Hope that helps some people... - ---- As promised last week, as soon as I got my act together, I'd tell you all what I learned from our artist neighbor who is tinting photos. Basically, there are special paints for it and they aren't cheap. About $7 for an itty bitty tube, but I guess you don't use much. There are separate tints for glossy and matte photos, so make sure you get the right one for the photo you'll be working with! The photo has to be damp, so wet it down with water. He uses cotton swabs to apply the tint in a circular motion and then wipes off the excess with cotton balls. He said there are special fixatives that you'll need to use once you're done too. There is a thinner you'll need to use to get the tints the way you want them. He said it smells an awful lot like Linseed Oil, but it's not labelled as that. There are different ones for the glossy and matte paints. I can't remember that any book was mentioned, sorry. He also said that photos that have had some water damage really aren't damaged! He said just run it under tap water until it's really wet and then hang it up to dry. Try this on a crummy one first before you try it on any of your heirlooms, but he swears this works!! Hope some of this helps someone! I thought it was great because I had no stamps, little money and no idea of what I liked to do. I thought it was great and I got a lot of stamps for trades and all. But now, I am wary of grab bags because I have been disappointed more times than not. Often grab bag stamps are small to very small, and are not necessarily images that I would use. Now I will get grabbags only if it is a new company (one whose stamps I don't have yet) or one whose catalog I have seen and like most of what is in it. So in answer to your question - I would say to a newbie - go for the grab bags. ---------- From: stamperella To: rubberstampers@firewall.genie.net Subject: RS: Grab bags or Individually Date: Wednesday, February 19, 1997 1:22PM Hi, When you are just starting out stamping, do you think it is wiser in the long run to purchase grab bags, especially if you can specify scene, people, animals, etc., or are you better off in the long run buying the individual stamps (um's) you want? Ofcourse, they you end spending alot of money on catalogs?? HELP! If anyone has a suggestion, I would greatly appreciate it? Have you been happy with grab bags? I'd think everybody would want to know some good gift ideas. I'd like something from the sender's home state. From Florida I could send shells, key lime juice, a Florida cookbook, photos or old postcards of area attractions which could be used on cards. I guess this wouldn't work if there was only one participant from a particular state! Well, you could do it for the last package at least.
