Date: Sun, 23 Feb 97 21:33:44 GMT Subject: RS TAN Judging Cards, etc...my 2 cents worth In finally getting through my mail I have read with interest the TAN on cards being judged. This particular thread has stuck in my head and I've been pondering it for the last few days now. What I understand is that this was a topic, a thought, and was not an actual occurrence but the question was raised if it might. What I have to draw from are my own experiences with this list and swaps I've participated in. Thinking back to the first swap I hosted, a gift bag swap, I have to admit my bags were probably the worst of the bunch (please, don't anyone feel it necessary to agree with me, okay?). No, I'm sure they were. The artistic and creative capabilities of the people on this list are truly amazing and I still 'ooh' and 'aah' over most of the swap items I receive. I picked up on several people's 'styles' from various swaps and sent them a message asking how they did their cards. I think Sandy Lemons was the first one I asked how she was able to blend her colors so well and since we've become good friends and I think the world of her. You can bet I never would have learned that here where I live. I live in an area that has yet to be enlightened to the joy of rubber stamping (I'm working on it) and I can give total credit to my stamping technique improvements to this list. My problem now seems to be getting the ideas from my head to my hands when I'm actually stamping. I can't be the only one that looks through Somerset Studio and makes a mental note to try 10 different techniques, only to stand at my stamping table the next day with a 'duh, what am I gonna do' ringing through the house. I _love_ participating and hosting swaps. There are advantages and disadvantages to both. My biggest drawbacks are a) my own lack of creativity and b) limited stamping time due to the rest of my life continually getting in the way. I am an eternal optimist and would hope no hostess would ever receive my cards and think they weren't good enough to distribute to everyone else. If that ever is the case I hope the hostess does return them because I wouldn't want to play anyway. I just finished my cards for the Teddy Bear swap. I must have cut out 50 different patterned circles only to end up not using them at all and reverting to a monochrome kind of card with paper lace glued on the front. For some reason I feel like I should make something complicated, with many layers, embellishments, embossing and coloring and that's just not realistic for my time schedule. I've spent the weekend at home with my two daughters battling the flu. I think they were having a contest to see who would throw up on the most sofa cushions just to entertain themselves at watching Mom clean them. I've been stamping when I can, in between runs of distributing small amounts of juice, fluffing pillows and changing the Disney movie. My youngest daughter now wants to be called "Ducky" after a dinosaur in "Land Before Time" yep, yep, yep! Somehow, even though I'm climbing the walls and feeling VERY claustrophobic, I did manage to complete THREE--count 'em THREE swap sets! In the mail tomorrow will be The Sunflower Swap cards, the Teddy Bear Swap cards and The Leaf swap. I'm also extremely proud that I saw Nancy Curry's House swap listing and next to my name was a REC'D. That must be a FIRST! I'm improving all the time, and I give credit to the list for letting me know there is a stamping world out there and how I can be a part of it. Everyone has to start somewhere. I started at the VERY beginning and feel like I'm just starting to understand HOW everything works. My house looks like a tornado has gone through it, we've ate everything except the kitchen cupboards themselves, and I've had a good dose of stamping in the midst of all this sickness and chaos. It's helped me keep a smile on my face. So thanks to all the hostesses that have not returned my cards for being 'not up to par'. I _do_ appreciate it. A few have been described in previous posts, but I wouldn't want to leave anyone out when handing out to kudos. The Magenta lovers are some exceptional stampers/artists! Every one of the six cards I got was a beaut. First, the large cat face was stamped onto the neatest top-fold card with rounded lower corners, and his ears were cut out of the back portion of the card so they stick up over the fold. His eyes must be that 3-D stuff I hear about, and they are mesmerizing. The artist in question? Joyce Tubbs. I really want to hear from you on the card shape. Did you round those corners yourself? Another cat, this time the sleeping kitty, is stamped in a turquoise ink (I LIKE that!) onto a square cardstock, then mounted onto a corrugated bit of turquoise cardstock cut into a stairstep shape, then mounted on a red card, which also has that wonderful shape with the top-fold, rounded corners. Hmm. Hope I can buy this. Please enlighten me. I do live in a rubber wasteland, here in the plains of Illinois, so I don't get to see a lot. Got one from Imagene with the girl on a horse. This is such a nice design, and she has colored it so well. It's framed out with a bold blue foiling, maybe??, in a line around the edge, on a metallic pewter-like paper, then onto a dark cardstock. The overall effect is so charming, Imagene. My granddaughter loves horses, so I should have that stamp, too. In reading another post about this swap, I read the description of the next card and only then knew it was from Cynthia Sillitoe, since the credit was missing. Probably fell off along the way. It's the elegant stamp of a woman with a somewhat Asian pattern, stamped in gold on a red mulberry or silk paper with torn edges. Very sophisticated. This is mounted on a black cardstock for maximum impact. Paula Sigman Lowery's card shows a great color sense. It's a very pleasing balance of colors with yellows, gold, greens, and purples on an eggplant cardstock layered onto a tan/gold. The square stamp is a panel of repeating images, a sun, a crow, a pear, etc. in a quilt-like pattern. Is this one stamp or did you put these together, Paula? I don't have a Magenta catalog so couldn't check. I love square cards, too. Karen's card was described before, but I did want to tell you I do like the simplicity of the monochrome inking and the delicate gold lines. Thank you for hosting this swap. These are some of the prettiest cards I've seen. ConnieKoch ------------------------------ From: Kate Whitridge Date: Sun, 23 Feb 1997 13:39:37 -0500 (EST) Subject: RS: Florida "Finds" (long) I'm back (booo, cold up here; yaaa, home to the list!) and wanted to share some stamping things that I bought, as well as review the stores that I was in. When I was at Stamp Cabana (reviewed below), Marg Hjelmstad (sp?), one of their stamp and card designers, came in and showed us two new stamp-related items. One was the new thick embossing powder stuff by Suze Weinberg (sp?). This works similar to regular embossing powder - stamp the image with embossing or pigment ink, pour on the powder, pour off the excess, and heat. The difference is that this stuff provides a thicker coating of clear EP that looks like glass - great with stained glass, and also enhances water-effects when you're doing a sea or pond scene, or want to add dew-drop effects to a flower. Drawback is that it comes in a huge bottle. Nice that it comes with isntructions and 3 project ideas. I've forgotten, but it seems to me that it was $12 US or $14 or so. The other thing Marg demo'd was her new Michaels-bought Splatter Tool. She got hers in the faux-finishes area of Michaels. I bought one later in the day at Pearl, but my friend Marva found it for me, and I think it was in a different product-area of the store (and Pearl's was charging close to $2 *less* for it). The tool looks like a flat wooden wishbone, about 4 or 5 inches longer. Between the two tynes, there is a metal mesh. You apply ink or watered-down paint to the mesh with the accompanying brush. The brush has stiff bristles, and brushing them against the metal causes dropplets of ink/paint to spatter on the cardstock below. Depending on the amount of ink/paint on the mesh, the blotches are smaller or bigger. When there's just a bit of ink on the mesh, then the result is a very fine spattering that looked just like air-brushing. I suspect that the air-brush effect is much cheaper, but more painstaking than using an actual air-brush. I intend to play more with this over the next week or so. Stamp Stores - Had a lovely shop-stop at Treasure Cay in Clearwater. This is a large-ish stamp store (in my experience, which is limited to the two stores in the Ottawa, Canada area), with a nice variety of stamp companies. Bought some Effie Glitzfinger/St. Louis whatever stamps, and some Stamp Francisco. Then I had a whole day spree in Orlando with my friend Marva met again two delightful stampers that I first met at the Jax convention last year. Stamp Cabana is a large stamp store, having the space of two small stores. SC has a big line of stamps of their own, but also carries most of the big stamp companies. Bought lots of stamps - SC and a variety of others, the thick EP from Suze W., and some dye ink pads. Marg demo's card-making and new techniques at SC twice a week, and I really like the idea of being able to see an artist at work (one of the wonderful things about conventions). Then I was introduced to Pearls for the first time. Amazing stuff, although they didn't have most of the exotic papers that I wanted in stock at the time. In addition to the splatter tool, I bought some rub-and-buff to play with, some interesting tissue papers from the card-and-giftwrap section, and two stamps (small selection of major stamp companies). The grand finale was Stamp Your Art Out. This is a medium-sized store with a huge stamp selection crammed everywhere (shelves, the *floor*, every last inch is used for stamps, stencils, stamping supplies, or "memories" stuff. The stamp selection was stunning and bewildering. In addition to all the big companies, she had interesting things like Acey Deucy. I bought stamps, stencils, and pre-packaged papers, and earned two free $5 or less stamps. I'll be pre-occupied playing with my new stamps and toys and re-couping my budget for the next few months... /\ (o) .\/\ /\ . . . in the darkness, light . . . . \.\/\ / .\ /\.\/. \ /. .\ /\ Kate Whitridge /. \/. .\/ . \/. \ The RubberSnark ./ . . \ . / ..\/\ whitridg@achilles.net ------------------------------ From: Shannon Green Date: Sun, 23 Feb 1997 12:36:07 -0600 Subject: RE: PERMANENT INK And for those of us passive/agressive types....you can always use the hubby's toothbrush for this when he leaves his dirty underwear on the floor one time too many.
