Your daughter is gonna breeze right through. My daughter is in ITP program right now (Interpreter Training Program). She is a 'CODA' (children of Deaf Adult) CODAs are considered best interpreters around for obvious reasons. It is thier first language anyways. valobra DaMadStamper On Fri, 28 Feb 1997, Ginny Newman wrote: > When I had my first child eight years ago, I was living in Austin, near > the School for the Deaf. I grew up living next to a man who was deaf & mute. I was in the 3rd grade at the time. He taught me sign language. I loved it. I still do. Years later when I was 16, I worked at a restaurant and had some customers who sat in my area regularly. They were deaf and knew I understood ASL. My parents used to tease me because they said I couldn't talk without signing. Which was true, but it seemed so natural. My 3 kids all have a basic understanding of ASL also. This is where the funny stories come into play. Most people have been in a store and witnessed a parent sounding like a fish wife on market day, scolding their kid in public. The kid looks completely humiliated and the parent looks abit foolish for making a scene like that. Anyways, from the time each of my kids were about 9 months old, I would teach them basic signs for words parents use when scolding their kids. Words like "No", "Sit down" (for when they would try to stand up in a shopping cart), "Come here", etc. For the first 2 weeks, I would say the words while signing them. After that, I quit saying the words verbally. When we were in a store & I had to discipline the kids, on one occassion, a little old lady came up and said (very loudly & slowly) "You have a beautiful child, I'm so sorry you can't hear her talk". I explained to teh lady that I wasn't deaf, which she in turn gave her condolences for my having a deaf child. When I explained that my kids are not deaf & why I used the ASL with them, she was confused, but understood the reasons. I'll never forget that. Kari, we sell both kinds in our store and yes, both are basically the same. I have found, though, that the very dark Marvy's do not always evaporate off of gold embossing, especially the dark purple and ultramarine. To me the Tombows just have a better tip which retains firmness longer than the Marvys.
