The new one ... weighs 9 ounces. Now, did they get the hint the the size of the stamp, and it's *weight* ... might have contributed to the squashing down (i.e., flattening out) of the rubber and resulting loss of detail? Or what? Yes, I know there's bound to be a variance in the weight of wood ... (it is, after all, a *natural* product) ... but not a variance of **25%**!! No way. The wood in the *new* stamp isn't even "real" wood (the old one was solid maple), the new one is some kind of pressed wood product. All of which is ok with me ... if it just *stamps* like it's supposed to. And I think it was nice of JudiKins to replace it ... but I wish it had those stitching lines on the pocket. I liked those. Does anyone know what I'm squawking about? Ant Judy H. - ---------- From: Judy Hornbrook To: POSTING RUBBERSTAMPERS Subject: JudiKins Jeans Pocket Stamp Date: January 27, 1998 11:44 PM A while back I inquired about contact information for JudiKins, because I thought there wasn't enough detail in the Jeans Pocket stamp (No. 1701) ... that on the index of the stamp, there were "stitching lines" that didn't show when it was stamped (these would be the lines across the pocket, which form kind of a "V") ... anyway, the stamp seemed to have almost flattened out too much ... for any "denim" detail. Some of you kindly provided me with the info I needed to call JudiKins. I am happy to report that they replaced this stamp ... yes ... sent a new one directly to my home. Know what's wierd? The *new* stamp, doesn't have the "V" -line of stitching on the pocket ..... nope, it's not there at all ... it's like this stamp has been reformatted *not* to include that bit of stitching. On the other one, it was clearly shown on the index of the stamp, but almost invisible when the stamp was inked and stamped. On the new stamp ... it's not there at all ... not even on the index. Strange, eh? The new stamp has the same number as the old one ... it's the *same* stamp ... but the image has ....... changed. Ant Judy H. I received a wonderful package from Kim Albert. My 3 year old daughter helped me open my "present"! Here are the goodies I received: 1. favorite poem- this was the poem titled "I believe in you and me" and was printed on paper with a watercolor border. A hugging bear couple is stamped and attached at the bottom. Very nice. I will frame this and put it in our bedroom! 2. make a pin - an elegant brushed rose stamped on paper clay and embellished with glitter and edged with gold. 3. make your receiver a valentine JUST for her--Happy Valentine's Day embossed in gold on cream cardstock and framed in gold. This is layered on a wine colored card. Two hearts with arrows through them are embossed in gold on navy cardstock and popped up on the cream layer. The inside sentiments are "Special friends mean so much." and "Happy valentine's Day". I love the colors Kim used in this card. 4. make an envleope to put your valentine in-paisley wall paper. Very pretty. 5. a valentine treat-yummy chocolate covered raisins and nuts in a pretty cellophane bag with hearts on it. Well, this treat's all gone now! 6. make something that includes a rose-a very elegant card. Roses embossed in silver on pink cardstock and embellished with burgandy satin ribbon and silver/white braid. I love the way this looks! 7. a valentine stamp-a heart and leaf corner stamp. I was looking at this at the stamp store and almost bought it. This scavenger package arrived shortly after I got home and boy am I glad I didn't buy it! 8. something to embellish a valentine with-some sort of gold colored sparkly foam (or is this like penscore?) Kim stamped a heart with "Follow your heart" on the foam. This is edged in pink and layered on a pink card. The card front is embellished with a burgundy ribbon and a pretty design on gold sealing wax. She even put this in a clear envy. Cool! 9. 3 sheets embellishing paper-a cool piece of pink marbled vellum, heart/checks in pink, and a paper with different hearts around the border. 10. using a sheet of cardstock, stamp some valentine appropriate images - hearts, hearts and more hearts. All are really great! 11. a 1/2 container of ep- red! 12. include a cats eye stamp pad in a nice valentine color - Cranberry 13. make a bookmark for your receiver - three different heart images stamped and colored on white cardstock. The bookmark is laminated and has a red tassel. I love the heart images. 14. make your receiver a cutsey valentine magnet- a cat holding a heart which says "A little hello". Laminated and a magnet attached to the back! Cute kitty. :o) 15. make a mechanical card-a shaker card framed with hearts and checkered squares and filled with cats & paws confetti. 16. include a large sheet of tissue paper - white tissue with red heart printed all over it. Perfect for valentines! I loved everything in this box. Kim even included some extra goodies - lots of cute stickers, all with at least one heart on it. I love stickers. Thank you so much for the effort you put into this. I enjoyed seeing how you did everything. A BIG Thank You to Barb for coordinating this! I want to thank everyone that has sent me and my family "well wishes" during this very difficult time. It has been very hard for all of us (especially my Husband and my son). You all really helped keep us positive about the whole thing. I want to tell you all about what is going on with my swaps (or rather what happened). I posted at the beginning of January that the swaps were done, descriptions posted, and everything mailed out. I had boxed everything up and my husband took it to the coast to be mailed from the US side of the border. I assumed that they went out and never thought another thing about it. As my health got worse, I had to give up my email and other affairs to my husband. He downloaded my mail everyday. I accumulated over 8000 messages! He never checked the messages, he just downloaded them. Last week I was told (by a couple good friends on the list) that people were flaming me because my swaps had never arrived. I asked my husband about it and he admitted (with great dismay) that the swaps had totally slipped his mind. He was so worried about me that everything else didn't matter. He felt really terrible about the whole thing. He assured me that the swaps had been mailed but they were really late. There was nothing I could do. I went and had a look at my email. From the messages that I saw (just skimming the list stuff) some of the messages actually shocked me. I realize that my Christmas swaps got messed up and they were late. I agree, you have a right to be angry at me. But the messages some of the messages that were sent to me were more than that. I was accused by 2 people that I had actually stolen the cards (why would anyone "steal" the cards???? I dont understand this one at all!). I was told that I was a nasty person, a bad person, a con artist, etc etc etc. I was told that I was no longer allowed to host any more swaps, that I wasn't welcome on the lists any longer, etc. This was totally chocking to me and believe me I cried many tears. I am being treated like a vendor who has skipped onthier customers, not a swap hostess who's cards are late. Is this fair??? Thank God I had friends on the list who were "looking" after me. Their support through all this (the swaps, and my health issue) has been terrific. I owe them a lot!!!! I want to thank them and also all the swap participants who emailed me and told me that it was all right that the swaps were late, they understood my situation. THANKS!!!! I can only say that I am truly sorry for this. Both my husband and I feel terrible that this happened. I take a lot of pride in hostessing swaps. I have hosted quite a few of them and all of them have been very successful. What happened this time was very unfortunate but out of my control. Had my health not gotten to the stage that it is, the swaps would have gone out right on schedule (not to mention the Strike factor!!!). Please believe me when I say that I am sorry. My husband assures me that they were mailed from the US side of the border. You should all be receiving them this week. My valentine swaps were swapped right on schedule. They are ready to go out today. I should be able to post the descriptions this evening or tomorrow. Stay Happy and Healthy! Let's see, just to let you know in advance, my theme for descriptions this month is ....... (drumroll) "the use of juxtaposition"! (audience sighs... "oh no, not another themed description...") (Author gamely plunges onward...) "I will attempt to apply this theme to each and every card, thus bringing a sense of unity to an exchange that is made up of such delightfully different images!" (sound of author cracking knuckles while ignoring audience shifting restlessly in their seats, checking their watches....) There are two cards in the group I received which I think are excellent examples of why I should get more phrase stamps (so far, I think I have three, but none of them anywhere near as neat as these... Robin's (Ma Vinci) card uses a large Judi-kins sheet music stamp as a background - stamped in black on creamy white and placed on a black base card. Over this, mounted on gold photo corners, is a deckle-edged piece of vellum, completely covering the sheet music so that it appears as a muted background to the fore images. On the vellum is embossed an image of Leonardo's man (you know, the one where the man is placed inside a circle, arms and legs akimbo?) in black, and below this is the phrase stamp embossed in gold. OK, the part that is a great juxtaposition is the suggestion of reverence of centuries of great art and artists and this phrase that, while not irreverent, has a certain flippancy and casual- ness about it that is charming! "Without Art, we are but monkeys with car keys." Cool, huh? The other card that uses a phrase stamp to excellent effect is from Jodi Morrison (swap host!). This card features one stamp on the front, a pair of hands casting a shadow of a bird behind it, stamped in navy blue, embossed in clear (had to be, in order to capture the wonderful detail on the stamp!), on gold cardstock cut out with a fancy Fiskar edger. This is layered over a square of navy mulberry paper, the edges beautifully feathered; this in turn is layered over another square of gold cardstock, and all of this is layered over a navy blue base card. I love the look of the very soft feathery edges of the mulberry paper layered between (juxtaposed!) the hard bright edges of the gold cardstock. Inside is an quote from Albert Einstein -- "The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science." The pairing of this quote and the image of the hands is an inspired choice! From Karen Karker is a square postcard featuring a moon and stars image. It is embossed in clear, (again, I think, to capture all of the wonderful detail of this image) on gold cardstock and the circular image is cut out and layered over a navy blue cardstock that has some wonderful scribbly squiggly silver lines/dots all over it. (For the life of me, I can't figure out how this is done.... very neat, though!). This is layered over silver cardstock, with all of the corners cut with a decorative corner (Nostalgia?), and the base card is a navy cardstock with rounded corners. The juxtaposition of the round central image with the square layered elements is a wonderful way to frame the moon, while the rounded corners echo the circle of the moon. Lovely composition! Margret Sock-Freiberg's delicately-colored postcard of a lounging snake woman (really! torso of a woman, and body of a snake! in a chaise!) is of a style that I have long admired but as yet do not have the opportunity to try. (I think it requires lots of stamps in your collection from lots of different companies. Is this right?) Anyway, she uses stamps from Imagine and Gumbo Graphics as well as Stamp Out Cute to create a scene in which this snake woman with a great expression is being observed over a wall by in incredulous man in a top hat. Well, I'm having a teeny bit of difficulty with a juxtaposition theme for this one, but we'll stretch it a bit with a little subjective observation here -- there is a cactus in the foreground, colored the same green as the snake woman's body -- the smooth scales of the snake vs. the sharp spines -- a suggestion of danger? could it be a warning to the man??? OK, OK, I said I was stretching it! It's a great card, though! The last two cards both use celtic images from Stamp Out Cute's celtic sheet. Kate Hill uses two of the images, a large Celtic knot oval in the center, and a corner stamp used on two diagonal corners of the card. All of the images are embossed in gold on white cardstock, and layered over a rectangle of dark-green and white plaid paper, which is glued onto a base card of a textured white cardstock. What I like most about this card is the use of these two traditions, the celtic knot and the plaid, together on the same piece. The straight up- down and left-right elements of the plaid play up the curves, circles, and entanglements of the celtic stamps very nicely. (Yep! It's a juxtaposition!) Susanne Reynold's uses the same oval celtic stamp in a very different way. I'm not certain how this is done but I'll take a stab in the dark -- looks like the oval is stamped in black, and then sponged over with a turquoise ink (darker at the top and fading to a lighter turqouise at the bottom) -- it's then embossed in clear, perhaps double embossed, but it has that kind of pebbly look to it, and there is a tiny touch of glitter, I think -- really stunning. The oval is 3D mounted on a black cardstock rectangle with rounded corners, and 3 strips of gold spattered mizuhiki(?) are glued underneath so that they kind of spray out at the top. The base card is a dark green ribbed cardstock with gold ink spattered across it and to the left is stamped vertically a border of waves in gold whose curves and curls echo the same shapes in the celtic stamp. Two horizontal gold paint marker lines at the top of the card pick up on the straight sweep of the mizuhiki and are a grand juxtaposition! to the sweeping circles and curves of the stamps. OK -- that's it! Please turn off the projector and turn up the lights. Are there any questions from the audience? uhhhh.... where is the audience? They were just here! Last year was my first year at a convention; I put an hour into each pin I made (so I only made a dozen.) I figure if I make a dozen or so every two weeks I'll have about 100; course then there'll be the last minute rush to make pins, because I really think 400 is more appropriate for Puyallup!
