Having hosted two swaps in my life (and starting a third), I'm now an expert. NOT! But here are a few things I have learned. A big part of the hosting is promotion. Getting people to sign up, and then reminding them that it's there so they all participate. I posted almost weekly for the two or three months that the swap was running. I'm not entirely convinced, by the way, that a distant due date is a good thing. I think you should give at least a month, but three months is probably too long. By that time, people that don't have their cards done probably aren't going to benefit from more time. I tend to pick off-the-wall topics that haven't been done, or aren't as common. There seems to be usually two or three swaps happening concurrently with each major holiday. I like to be different. I hosted the surreal "Playing With Dali" swap, and the "Roswell" (UFO) swap. The Dali swap was pretty cool, because there were a lot of participants that did the surreal thing as their first attempt. They used it as an excuse to stretch, and I like that. I'm currently hosting another Surreal ("Madness Takes its Toll"). The Roswell was just a lot of fun. A bit of advice that someone gave me that was good was that as soon as you announce a proposal, make a folder in your email program for it. Then move all messages pertaining to that swap into that folder. That way you'll never wonder where they are. And, when the cards start arriving, put them in a box set aside. I don't ask for SASE's any more. You get all kinds of sizes of cards, and all kinds of sizes of envelopes, and they don't always match. I ask for stamps and mailing labels. A while ago, there was a big flap on the list because hostesses were asking for an extra card that they could keep for themselves. Some people thought that was selfish of them to require participants to make one more card. I, myself, make my cards assembly-line style, so 6 cards is just as easy as 5, so I try to send an extra for the host. When I host, I say, "5x5, and an extra for the host is appreciated, but not required." Some people like to include a little unmounted die or some little gift for the host, and sometimes I have received a little gift from the host. None of this is required, but it's a nice touch. After it's all done, I scan the cards and post them on my web page, in the HansenArt Gallery. Anyway, that's some random thoughts on hosting. I just wanted to take a minute to thank Lorri for the wonderful service and attention that I received when I placed an order with her last week. It started out as a simple RAK, and got a little complicated, but Lorri handled it wonderfully. I HIGHLY recommend her (and from what I have been told by the receipient--her chocolates rate even higher! LOL) Here's what happened: I emailed her to ask about whether or not she carried Diabetic candies. She did, gave me a great price, shipping included, so I placed the order to be sent to another state. She had the order ready to go and shipped it in less than 24 hours ( just told me to drop the check in the mail!). BTW not only did she custom make the chocolate, she always made a special tin with my message on it!. Anyway, I kept waiting and waiting to hear from the receipient and Lorri was just as concerned as I was. A few days ago, she offered to send another batch FREE because apparently they had been lost in the mail. I didn't want to put her through the expense or trouble, so I told her to hang on for a few more days. She checked with me daily, and finally yesterday, all but demanded that she was sending a replacement! LOL. Luckily, the lady got them last night and we all breathed a huge sigh of relief. (So much for 2-3 day priority mail!--yuck!) I was really amazed at the way I was treated by Lorri, who basically didn't know me as anything other than a screen name on the computer. She mailed with out payment, answered all my questions, sent me the nicest thank you note I have ever received from a vendor, kept in touch daily, and insisited on making things right even though it wasn't anything that she had any control over. What more could you want from a vendor?? Valentine's day is coming, so if you need a unique gift, email Lorri at (dylorri@aol.com) you'll be glad that you did. Not affiliated, except as one VERY happy customer who will be ordering again!
