Rubber Stamped POB 20357 Oakland, CA 94620 - - ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Jan 1998 14:50:28 -0500 From: "John M. Nielsen" Subject: RubberTown: Current Project - LONG Just completed a project that took about 16 hours from inspiration to completion so thought I would share with you some of the things I learned: The project was an accordian book using a very ancient piece of poetry. I wanted it to look "old". I knew and tried the old tea bag routine to stain the paper but did not like the results this time. What else could I use? I thought of such things as worcestershire sauce, gravy browning, singeing with a candle, shoe polish, etc., etc., etc. Then I recalled having a set of Marshall's photo retouching colours that have been around for nigh on 20 years. They were still good. I dropped a bit of the Basic Brown into a dish and threw my scraps of verse in there - FANTASTIC - not only did it give me the grayed colour I wanted, it turned the paper quite brittle - a plus for me, and it stained unevenly - another plus. Now I know that not many of you have Marshall's dyes around the house but the point is - don't be afraid to experiment - lots of times you'll fail - sometimes you'll succeed beyond your dreams. Then I needed to stamp on calligraphic parchment and be able to colour with markers without any bleeding or smudging and I wanted the black to be very, very black. I tried Marvy black dye, Fabrico black dye, Colorbox crafters ink - nix to all. So I pulled out the oldest stamp pad I own - A Commotion Stamp N Iron permanent black - the ink was perfect - unfortunately the foam pad was disintegrating and I was picking up as much pad on my stamp as ink! What now? Well I tore out all the old foam, found some thin sponge that a computer card had been packaged in, cut it to fit the ink pad box, dropped a couple of lines of low-melt glue to hold the sponge in place, dabbed on some Commotion permanent ink and voila - problem solved. Next I needed to glue parchment paper to cardstock. I knew that parchment paper is notorious for wrinkling when damp so I tried a small bit with Perfect Paper Adhesive and it seemed to work - OUCH - sure it worked on a small section but once I covered the whole surface I needed to glue - wrinkles, wrinkles everywhere. I figured I was DEAD - but no, the PPA didn't stick very well and I was able to peel the paper off and reapply with YES glue - most of the wrinkles have gone now. I also learned that my Grandma really did teach me most of the things I need to know - "Wear a pinafore" (I guess an apron to us). Yep, it's a good idea, then you always have somewhere to wipe those gluey fingers when you can't quite reach the damp cloth you knew you would need. And she also said, "Use your fingers - they were invented before any tools". Right again - unless you are using toxic glues, fingers do a far better job of spreading very thin, even coats than brushes, credit cards, spatulas or anything else. Hope nobody considers this a TAN. Aren't they pretty small? Why >would you want them if you can't mail cards in them???? I use the little envys for tiny cards within my cards. Several things: I've printed a large mailbox on the computer, cut it out and mounted it on card stock. I left a slit in the mailbox so I could put microlopes with little messages inside the mailbox. I printed a tiny address, put a tiny postoid on each envelope and put a tiny message inside each one. Microlopes look nice attached to bags, boxes, cards, whatever. Decorate them with designs instead of addresses and postoids. Use them as envys for gift tags. They work as little sachets (with small particles of potpourri inside). And, you can take the pattern to a copy store or scanner and make big envys in lots of shapes or go even smaller (for your dollhouse!). The copyright says you're not to make copies to give away, but encourages you to resize them and have fun. The bird house is darling, by the way and the accordion book is a complete kit of a very tiny book! Actually, it opens as a book and doesn't stretch out accordion style, so it gives you a nice pattern you could enlarge to make books any size you like. I'm using the directions to make 4.5" x 4.5" fabric covered books -- a wild Mary Englebreight fabric at that. No affiliation to the company; all disclaimers apply! But, I am honest. I do know the designer. Else is in the local area and I've taken classes from her, plus bought every pattern and kit she comes out with! I like her work.
