I tried a new technique the other day that I'm sure many of you have tried already. But, thought I would share it in case some of you out there haven't yet. Simple and beautiful. Another way to use our beloved vellum paper. Dry emboss with a stencil and stylus. When you are done, the look is so pretty, the vellum has a white line wherever you have embossed. I did some and then colored in the back of parts of the design for accents and it was gorgeous!! The whole large envy was stamped front and back with their wonderful designs...It is a great piece of mail art. I highly recommend this business, these folks are great to do business with. Carol - - ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Feb 1998 10:59:09 -0900 From: Lynette Walters Subject: RubberTown: Decorating Switchplates Robyn and others who wanted this info: Most of the decorative switchplates I've made have just been done with decoupage - using bits and pieces of decorative papers. I just use the Modge Podge or whatever it's called, and follow the directions on the bottle. But then I thought, why couldn't I use my rubber stamps? I didn't really know what kind of inks to use directly on the switchplates, and didn't really care for the color of them anyway, so what I did was take a piece of mulberry paper, embossed gold stars, suns, etc all over it, then decoupaged it to the switch plate. I just sprayed a clear sealer over the whole works when it was done, and it looks really nice. But I'd be really interested in knowing how others have been able to incorporate dye inks and coloring images into this - if anyone has done it. The crumpled up tissue paper works really nice, too, since if it rips, you just glue some more over it since it's so thin anyway. But the ones I saw advertised in the store were basically bits of seed packets and other things related to gardening, and they were so expensive! There are some people that I've heard of that buy the contractor's boxes of switchplates, which puts them under $1 apiece, and then turn around and sell them at craft fairs for $5-$6 each. Hope this helps! Lynette Bob and Robyn wrote: > > Lynette, > > Can you share how you did your switchplates? I tried getting a hold of John, the owner of the list, but he doesn't respond. I was wondering if someone could please e-mail the majordomo list and get a copy of 'who' and forward it to me. That way, I could see how I am listed and hopefully get off that way!!! It won't give me the list, as it says that I'm not a member of rubbertown!!! UGH!!! You are all very talented. Thanks Marcia for doing a great job of hosting and thanks so much for the unmounted stamps, they are a wonderful surprise. You are very generous. Michelle Oakley did a beautiful, feminine card - cowboy boots with a cowboy hat resting on them and roses overflowing the boots. Lovely. Donnap has boots with a hat resting on it and a bouquet of spring flowers in one boot. The image is raised off the card and attached to some wonderful mauve handmade paper. The bottom 1/4 of the cover is cut off with an edger revealing the inside of the card which is stamped with prickly pear cactus. Beautiful card and I really like the idea of cutting part of the cover away. Marcia did a faux leather look and stamped a cat howling at the moon on tan fun foam. Looks great! Martha's card has an embossed black cowboy hat raised and attached to a piece of corrugated paper which is attached to black leather-look paper and that's attached to cardstock that has been sponged in rust brown. The added touch is Marsha has punched two small holes in the front of the hat and threaded gold cord through and knotted it. Great look. AG made a elegant card. Green speckled cardstock with a swatch of mauve cardstock along the left side. Stamped on the mauve swatch is a single black and white feather and the words Thinking of You. Inside on the right hand corner is a stamped prickly pear. Tntrilling's card starts with turquoise cardstock sponged with gold paint. A really interesting piece of paper is glued to the cardstock. A gold paper with lots of patterns and textures. Very abstract southwest. Really nice. Sandra Hampson went all out and made a frame, it actually comes with an attached stand. The frame is by Rubbernecker. I like the leather cord and turquoise beads that you glued to the frame. A stamped image of John Wayne wearing a cowboy hat is framed. He can be replaced with another photo or picture, but I think I'll keep the Duke. Thanks. As usual you did an exemplary job, going beyond the call of duty. Elaine made a darling mini Christmas shaker card. A fireplace with Santa's feet dangling in the hearth, which is also the shaker window, it's filled with silver confetti. Ruth made a fun Mickey Mouse shaker card. Mickey's ears are cut out and filled with Mickey confetti. Christine made an exotic summer shaker card. The shaker window is filled with tropical confetti and the window is framed by an embossed image of hibiscus, seashells, a margarita, a flamingo, a beach umbrella and more. What's also interesting is that she used glue to create bubbles and eyes for the flamingo and fish. Mary created a sweet card with a little boy dressed to go fishing. He's looking at a window filled with fish confetti and little tiny beads. It's also stamped with a fish and Wishes Do Come True. Very darling and I like the glitter. Last but not least, Paula Jo Green made me laugh. The card is oh so rude. The theme is beans. Excuse me...It's the Frijoles! is stamped on the cover with the appropriate images (RubberBabyBumper's Buns, Nauceaus British boy, Small Puff) stamped below the message. Inside is a jar of real beans. Very clever in a naughty way! **What I learned from this swap: Fun Foam makes a great substitute for foam board plus you can choose a color that goes with the rest of the images.** Thanks, Rosemarie (creator of the SW mini shaker card) - - ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Feb 1998 18:03:18 -0500 (EST) From: rsmith Subject: Re: RubberTown: Books Check out this site. Then I used Sharpie permanent markers to color in. I sealed it with hair spray but since have learned that hair spray may yellow over time(hasn=92= t happened yet on these) so I will use a spray fixative in the future. The plates I bought (single switch) were around .50 or less at Home Depot. I sold several of these at craft shows.=20 I imagine you could also use Fabrico inks on these and heat set. I tried using dye ink and it ran when I tried to seal it. They are $5 each plus postage. They contain lots of gorgoeous fabrics, textiles, some paper and natural fibers. I have found that they are mostly wonderful fabric squares. The ones I have gotten had more than two shoe boxes full of goodies packed in them. I only have 9 of these available. Painting Glass! I just finished painting glass for the first time... and now I'm thinking about trying to rubber stamp a few pieces as well. I found a florist who'll sell me those nice little bulbous vases by the dozen... so I'm thinking I'll get those and paint/stamp away!!! I'm not sure how to get a nice even coat of paint on the stamp tho....just brush it on?? When painting, I used some of the MacKenzie Phillips type patterns on my plates and wine glasses... and tiny rosebuds on the vases... and I bought some Corel bowls (on sale!) in plain white for my girls to paint too... This is really fun... DH opened the oven the other nite and saw I was cooking dishes for dinner....we ended up eating Chinese! I'm currently using the "glossies" paint... but am thinking of trying the Delta next (you don't have to heat cure, but you have to put a gloss coat over your painted surfaces and cure for a couple of weeks.).... Just thought I'd share! I know all you artists out there are just chomping at the bit for another project! Wenonah ~~~~~ Wenonah's Workshop: RubberD & DancingD 16604 Music Grove Ct.
