I don't think its just the keeping-it-secret thing, though. I would expect that telepaths would only want to breed with telepaths from the attraction and intimacy factor - what would be the attraction of a telepath for someone who was head-blind? I agree and have suggested this before, a marriage to a Sap would have something missing but this would not prevent two non tp's falling in love and trying to work out their differences. The biggest problem as I see it is the children, are they born as TP or do they have to 'break out' if the former is the case then isolation from others would be essential in order to keep the Tp's existence a secret. This would push them all closer together to form a very tight community. I think that a kind of communal living would develop where they share child care responsibilities, this sort of arrangement had already started when the original series TP's lived together in the lab. An added bonus would be TIM to play baby sitter when they all go out lol. Jackie -- May your senses be enlightened and your dreams be fulfilled. Date: 11 Nov 1999 19:30:38 +0000 Hi all, While watching my tapes, a few little questions regarding the New Series came to mind. They're probably kinda stupid and ambiguous, but I wondered what other people thought about them. -At the beginning of "The Culex Experiment" Part 1, a man in a white lab coat is running from Culex's mosquitoes. Who do you think this man was, and why did she send her bugs after him? -In "The Culex Experiment" Part 3, while Ami and Ruth are contemplating going to the police, Adam closes his eyes, and holds his necklace up for a minute before he tells them to go to the police. Is there a reason that he held up the necklace - does it have some significance? -In "The Rameses Connection" Part 1, Amanda James says that she heard "Cheopa Bana Huska" before. She was on a dig in Cairo, and she met a man, claiming to be over 120 years old, who spoke in a mixture of modern Egyptian, Arabic, and a "strange local dialect." Later in the episode, Millicent Rutherford said that Cleopatra's Needle had been in London for 120 years. (I don't think that's entirely accurate, because, AFAIK, it was transported in the 1880s, but whatever). Anyhow, is the 120 year-old man who said "Cheopa Bana Huska" relevant to the story at all, or was he just some kid who remembered when the obelisk was moved? -In the same episode, Ami, upon viewing the obelisk, suddenly jumped, and the viewer (and maybe Ami?) heard a small "bong" sound. Was there any reason for Ami's action? -In the same episode, what exactly was in that secret room that Adam entered? How did it pertain to Rameses' plot? Sorry if these are kind of jumbled, or if the answers are really obvious and I'm just missing them. But what do you all think? I've always thought that it would offer a nice sense of completion if that guy had been the limo driver that Dr. Culex later impersonates. That would imply her planning ahead and also answer the question as to why the original limo driver doesn't show up and ruin things. On the other hand, the lab coat would suggest otherwise. Anyhow, is the 120 > year-old man who said "Cheopa Bana Huska" relevant to the > story at all, > or was he just some kid who remembered when the obelisk was moved? I'm not certain he told her that 'Cheopa Bana Huska' meant Cleopatra's needle. I think it's far more likely from they way Dr James had to look up the words, that she gathered a number of words from him separately - so, the words 'sacred', 'obelisk' and 'Cleopatra' came separately not as a group. Of course, why Tutankhamun would refer to it as Cleopatra's Sacred Obelisk is a mystery anyway - Cleopatra's Needle is a modern name for the obelisk with no basis beyond the common Egyptian origin - and if he'd managed to pick up the name somewhere, surely he'd have just called it Cleopatra's Needle - either in Egyptian, or maybe even in English. Interestingly, I'm wondering if the people who put together the 'language' used in that serial really did some research. I no longer have the source, but I know that the words for Welcome and Hello in the language of the Kosovars who came here as refugees is *very* similar to Maharba - I might have to see if I can find out what the work for Obelisk and Sacred is in their language. OK - so far my search of magazines has been limited to 1992 and to only one magazine in title - but as it is 'TV Week', it does have a few articles on Kristian concerning his final days with Neighbours. I will be searching earlier magazines as well and may pick up some articles about his early days in Neighbours - but I don't anticipate their being all that many. I never watched the show, but it's my impression that for most of the time on the show, his character was fairly minor. BTW, many of these articles are accompanied by pictures - but so far I can only get black and white photocopies of variable quality. I *hope* to be able to eventually scan the colour photos - but don't hold your breath. ***** Neighbours Star Rushed to Hospital - Kristian laid low by a medical emergency in Britain (TV Week, 25th January 1992, page 4) Kristian Schmid gave Neighbours producers a fright when a burst abscess in his throat landed him in hospital. He spent four days in a private hospital in Britain and was on a drip because his inflamed throat made it too painful to eat. Earlier, Kristian, 17, complained of a sore throat before performing in the pantomime Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs in Leicester, where he was the star. His UK publicist, Ceri Berry, says: "He saw a doctor who dismissed it without even looking inside his mouth, and he managed to struggle through the show. "Next day it was too painful for him to swallow, so he went to another doctor, who didn't look in his throat either and gave him a prescription for penicillin tablets." Ceri called in a top throat specialist who immediately had him admitted to a nearby private hospital. She says. "By that time his throat was ulcerated and one abscess had burst. He was very poorly indeed." Kristian, who plays Todd Landers in Neighbours, was appearing nightly as funnyman Muddles in the panto and doctors say his illness was probably due to overwork and stress. Ceri says: "He missed 10 days of the show. He was desperate to get back, but we told him to wait until his voice was completely better." His mother Julia and brothers Adam, 22, and Carl, 11, came over with Kristian and stayed with him while he was performing in the panto. Ceri says: "His family felt he was too young to be alone. His father and grandmother popped over, too. It was fortunate they were around when he was so ill." Before jetting back to Melbourne and Neighbours, Kristian planned a short break in England. (TV Week, 1st February 1992, page 17) Neighbours star Kristian Schmid flew back to Australia on the weekend, glad to be on speaking terms again. The popular young actor feared he would be written out of several episodes of the show after he was taken to hospital with a burst abscess in his throat. Still sounding hoarse from his health scare, 17-year-old Kristian spoke to TV WEEK exclusively from his hideaway in Britain, where he has been starring in a pantomime, before making his journey home to Melbourne. "It's been so scary," he admits. "I've never been so sick in my life." When specialists rules out completing his stage run, former Home and Away start Alex Papps stepped into Kristian's panto role in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs for the final performances. "My illness couldn't have happened at a worse time for me but, thankfully, Alex did a terrific job," Kristian says. The drama started when Kristian's throat felt painful and sore. "I was a bit worried, but carried on working that day and did the afternoon matinee," he says. "But in the morning it was worse and I had a fever, so we went to the local hospital emergency unit where the doctor told me to gargle with soluble aspirin. "It didn't feel any better so we went to another doctor and he said the same thing, but we managed to persuade him to give me some antibiotics. "But I felt appalling later that day, so they took me to a throat specialist who admitted me to hospital straight away." Kristian spent four days in a private hospital in Leicester, being fed intravenously and with a temperature of 40 degrees. "I don't think I appreciated how ill I was. I had a burst abscess on my tonsils which was pretty nasty," he says. The teenage workaholic, who was inundated with get-well cards and wishes from worried British fans, was desperate to get back on stage once medics allowed him home, but was forced to miss the final week of the panto. "It was so frustrating because I felt fine, but my voice kept coming and going," Kristian says. Doctors believe his hectic work schedule may have contributed to Kristian's illness. "I haven't had a break for 2 1/2 years and I was pretty run-down," he says. "I was playing in a draughty 1700-seat theatre with lots of dust and stuff. I got the infection from someone else, so I wasn't misusing my voice." Kristian has no plans to slow up when he returns to Neighbours. "I can't wait to get back - I miss the people I work with," he says. Kristian has played Todd Landers for 3 1/2 years. His contract comes up for renewal at Easter. "I haven't decided what I'm going to do yet but I'd love to do some theatre and movies." He says he mastered the art of juggling himself, with a lot of perseverance and a few tips along the way from professionals. The 17-year-old, who filmed his final scenes for Neighbours last week, has been signed to star in a remake of the Seventies sci-fi series The Tomorrow People. Co-produced by Thames TV and the American production company Nickelodeon, The Tomorrow People starts filming in the U.S. and Europe in August. Kristian decided to quit Neighbours after 4 1/2 years of playing Todd Landers. "I didn't have itchy feet to leave Neighbours just itchy feet to do other things," he says. "The workload didn't give me the opportunity to do that." After the seven-week-shoot for The Tomorrow People, Kristian will make London his home base. "I want to stay there for about two years," he says. "My goal is to get theatre work there. "I'd like to come back to Australia, like Peter O'Brien has done, with some credits to my name. "I haven't done any professional theatre work here. It's obviously easier to get the work in the UK because of Neighbours. "I'm setting my sights high, but I think you have to." There will be plenty of drama before Kristian makes his onscreen exit next month. Before he leaves Ramsay Street in dramatic episodes, Todd and girlfriend Phoebe Bright (Simone Robertson) must face the reality of becoming teenage parents. Kristian joined Neighbours at the height of its popularity, working with Jason Donovan and Kylie Minogue. "I remember how huge it was back then," he says. "We did some amazing personal appearances. Neighbours doesn't have the hype it had because it's not a new show anymore. "But people still watch and are interested." Kristian laughs at the observation his teenage years have been documented through the series. "I've grown up before everybody's eyes in Neighbours," he says. "Because I started so young, there's a lot of me in Todd. "I'll miss the show terribly, especially the family atmosphere. "I particularly miss the people I'm used to working with every day, such as Alan Dale, Anne Haddy, Maggie Dence and Simone." - Mark McGowan ***** I remember this article - the first mention I ever saw of the new series. After nearly five year playing Todd Landers, Kristian Schmid makes a dramatic exit in episodes now screening on Network Ten. "A death is bound to pick up the ratings," says Kristian, who quit the long-running Neighbours last month to star in a remake of the sci-fi series The Tomorrow People. "But I'd like to think that producers are showing a bit of respect for me and the character by giving him such an ending. "I'm pleased they have given Todd an exciting ending, instead of sending him off to Brisbane, or something like that. It's a good way to go out." Todd's demise is the fourth death in Neighbours' 7 1/2 year history. Usually, when an actor quits or is written out, producers opt for less violent exits. For instance, Lucy Robinson (Melissa Bell) has been packed off to Singapore, while next month, Paul and Christina Robinson (Stefan Dennis and Gayle Blakeney) go to Hawaii. Repeats of Neighbours? Where? When? I'm desperate to get some of his appearances from that for my TP video collection. OK - I've seen about three episodes of Neighbours in my life, so I'm not the best person to say when he joined the show, but from my reading, he seems to have joined the show around the same time that Charlene (Kylie Minogue) married Jason Donovan's character (actually a bit before). I'll see if I can find out where the repeats are in relation to KS appearances - but from memory, the show ran for three years before he joined it, so if the repeats have only started recently and from the beginning, it might be a while before he appears. But for Sally Jensen, who plays Kate Landers, and Kristian Schmid (Todd Landers), it doesn't cost a cent - in fact, they get paid for it. "I love working in Neighbours," says an elated Sally, 11. "All the people on the set are great. "I particularly love Craig and Jason," she adds with a grin. "We're good friends with Craig. He's taught us this really funny handshake." Now regulars in Neighbours, Sally and Kristian, 12, were originally recruited from the Actors Training Studio shortly after beginning classes. After five years of nagging her mother, bubbly Sally was enrolled at ATS... and just one week later she was snapped up by Network Ten producers. "We went to this audition because the parts popped up," says Sally. "We only had one drama lesson and decided to audition for the roles of Kate and Todd. "They called us a couple of days later and asked, 'Would you like to come in for a screen test?' "I always knew I wanted to act, even before I started. I guess I've got a feeling, something inside me that's telling me to do it." As Kristian has discovered, acting on prime-time television has its rewards. "I've been getting some fan mail, mainly from 13 or 14-year-old girls," says a blushing Kristian. "They ask me how old I am and how long I've been in the show - even where I live." But Sally has found that success can have its drawbacks. There was a recent holiday, for example, when she found herself surrounded by admirers. That was "a little bit scary". "I went to Fiji for my birthday and quite a lot of people would stare at me. Sometimes it was a bit annoying," she says. As hopeful and enthusiastic as they are, Sally and Kristian have a firm grip on reality. When they are not on the set, their number one priority is working with Marisa, their tutor, or going to school like other children. "They're not here full-time," says Marisa, "but it can be four or five days a week. My job is to keep them up to date with their schooling so they don't fall behind, and to coach them with their lines." Kristian and Sally's workload can mean sacrificing time with family and friends. Kristian, from Geelong, stays with relatives in Melbourne up to four days at a time. "I think sometimes that it's harder being a kid than an adult," says Kristian. "You can have a scene in the morning and then an hour's break - and then more scenes in the afternoon. "When you're working from seven o'clock in the morning to 11 at night, it gets a bit tiring doing school work as well. Instead of having a break to study lines, we have to do school work." Kristian and Sally want to become professional actors when they grow up - and they know that this requires absolute dedication and commitment. "Since we've started, we've learned how to act properly," says Sally. "But it's been hard work." "When someone has to cry, or you have to do something that's really difficult, you have to keep going over the scene again and again." Even after a grueling 12-hour day on the set, Ramsay Street's cute twosome are determined to follow their dream. "I think I do want to be an actor, but it's not as stable as architecture," says Kristian. "I'd like something to build on. It's not that I want to be noticed - that's not why I want to act. "I want to do something that people will remember... I don't want to be known as Kristian Schmid, the clothesmaker. KS joined the cast in early 1988. My friend hasn't been watching the repeats but he's going to check them out for me and he thinks he can give me a much more precise date when he sees what's going on (ie, when in 1987 these episodes were shown). As for his appearance, he really doesn't seem to have changed all that much over the years - obviously he does look older but his basic features are roughly the same. He joins the cast at the same time as a younger girl (his 'sister') so that might help your mother - look out for two kids moving in. And I do have three photos of him from 1988 which I will be putting on my website when I get home tonight (they'd be up already except Alphalink wouldn't cooperate.) And on the receiving end of his first screen kiss will be 13-year-old Melbourne actress Thea McLeod. It's uncharted territory for Kristian and an indication producers are crediting his character with more maturity. "Todd still gets up to some of his old tricks, but I now think he's moving out of it (the mould) a bit," Kristian says. "I really think he's grown up a lot lately." Alison Ryder (Thea) creates quite a storm in Erinsborough. She does not get on with her aunt and the Robinson family takes her in. "Todd rings Alison and asks her out and the romance starts from there," Kristian says. "She takes advantage of him, pushing him around and generally using him." Tempers are let loose when it's discovered Alison has stolen a brooch from the Robinson house. "Todd tries to cover up for her at the start," Thea says. Kristian adds: "But the Robinsons just don't like her. "They don't object to Todd having a girlfriend but they don't approve of Allison because of the trouble she has caused. "This is Todd's first real girlfriend and it's interesting. There are kissing scenes... that's as far as it goes at this stage." Kristian, who hails from Geelong, Victoria, says he's enjoying the challenge of playing Todd in new circumstances. But the 14-year-old's role in the TV WEEK Logie-winning series does have its drawbacks. While he gets back to his family and friends in Geelong most weekends, he lives with his grandmother in Melbourne through the week. "It makes it much easier with work to stay in Melbourne and I'm used to being away all the time, but I sometimes feel like I'm drifting away from my friends in Geelong," he says. - Darren Devlyn ***** Shaun ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Shaun Hately" Subject: TPDIS: Kristian Schmid Date: 18 Nov 1999 18:52:37 +1100 The images of KS from 1988 I mentioned are now up at http://www.alphalink.com.au/~drednort/kris1988.html Enjoy! Although he'll miss his former colleagues, Kristian Schmid is set to move up the ranks and take on a more prominent role in the Network Ten series. Kristian, 15, who plays Todd Landers, is into his third Neighbours year, making him one of the show's "veterans". And with Kristian's popularity increasing all the time, don't be surprised if the Network Ten publicity machine starts working overtime on the young actor. "I'm really please the character is starting to get better storylines and do a bit more," Kristian says. "I was always stuck between the 18-year-olds and the 10-year-olds. The first year I was here I was always standing around in the background, not doing much at all. "Todd was so small at the beginning, too, with a squeaky voice, but he's grown up a bit now. He's more of a teenager and this year's storylines have him doing more teenage things than kids' things." Kristian, whose father is Austrian and mother Hungarian - he calls himself a "hungry Austrian" - says he hasn't been too worried about maturing on screen and acting out situations close to the bone. At age 14, Kristian faced his first screen romance and kissing scenes with actress Jade Armenta at a time when, he admits, he was hardly experience with girls. Then, late last year, Kristian discovered he needed braces for his teeth. Not only did he face adjusting to his new looks offscreen, but he had to act out the trauma as Todd, too. "I'm lucky they're a clear set, not the steel things that make you look like Jaws. I have to wear them for 14 or 15 months," he says. "I am used to the now and when I walk down the street I look at lots of people's mouths, and heaps of people have got braces. "If I have to do things on screen that might be uncomfortable... well, to me Neighbours is to entertain people and I'm being paid to do that, so I'll do what they say. "I suppose I don't lead the normal life of a 15-year-old. I have to act like a mini-adult when I'm here because I have to be professional, but, as soon as you get me outside..." Kristian is continuing his studies this year, both on the set at Network Ten and at a Melbourne school, and says he's a "very average C student". "I'm not motivated enough and it would be a lot less hassle if I dropped out, but I can't. Part of being in Neighbours is that I have to keep up school, and that's the only thing that keeps me going." If Kristian ever decided to leave acting, he says he would probably work with his father, who designs and manufactures a range of men's clothing called Sailcloth. "It's up-market 'yachty' gear, conventional but with a twist. He started our factory about four years ago and it's only starting to take off now," Kristian says. "He works long hours, but at least he's got some fashion sense." - Chrissie Camp ***** Shaun ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Amy Bridger Subject: TPDIS: Actor in Mars Attacks? Among other images, the cover included a picture of John and Carol so naturally I had to buy it. It contains a five page article "A Connoisseur's Guide to the Tomorrow People (1970s version) by Zach Farquharson-Waugh and is more or less a basic episode guide, coupled with his opinion on each of the stories, his opinions of the characters, some TP quotes, 5 'Classic Moments'. "Hitler's Last Secret" is mistitled as "Hitler's Last Stand" but but besides that it's pretty accurate. Some quotes from the article: Referring to Carol/Sammie Winmill: "Especially dradful is Sammie Winmill as the 'sister figure' Carol when she is telling Stephen about the TPs... Her acting abilities leave a lot to be desired; incredibly towards the end of the series' run, The Tomorrow People would acquire an even worse actress..." In reference to 'The Slaves of Jedikiah': "Possibly the best thing about the story is the use of the stunning title sequence, the series' greatest strength, to symbolise Stephen breaking out." Referring to John: "John, comes across very well being a calm and stable individual." Stephen: "Stephen succeeds in his tole as 'the ordinary young person' who happens to be a TP." Peter: "This interesting run-around tale introduces Peter, an effeminate time guardian... The quality standard is maintained as another time travel story brings the return of male/female time guardian Peter..." Ginge and Lefty: "...they are crudely-crafted caricatures who are best forgotten." Elizabeth: "She is like the final piece of a jigsaw, and as she slips into place, the series hits its stride and starts its 'quality' period." The Blue and the Green: "This is undoubtedly a well-scripted and acted story, with some of the scenes of violence (like Elizabeth being cornered by thugs at the end of part two) being very effective. The best story? I wouldn't agree with that, but certainly worth watching if you are a novice TP fan." The Doomsday Men: "Sadly every run of good stories must end sooner or later and The Doomsday Men well and truly succeeds in that task." On Secret Weapon: "A taut and chilling psychological thriller. Yes, really!" "The series eerie stock music, based largely on the theme tune, is used to excellent effect in this story and greatly enhances its atmosphere." On Tricia: "...this story introduces Trisha Conway, a woman working for the military who could have been a tomorrow person is she wasn't such a bad person." "Sadly, the potentially-excellent character of Trisha does not return to Earth with the other TPs..." On Worlds Away: "An interesting story that sees the TPs without their powers as the Khultan have installed a device to blank them out." On A Man for Emily: "It was going too well, two good stories in a row. This infamous instalment sees Peter Davison and Sandra Dickinson guest star in an embarassing story of a matriarchal alien society coming across Earth... A hideous nightmare that should be destroyed." On Revenge of Jedikiah: "This season finale is sometimes hailed as the dramatic peak of the seires. Rubbish! It's a poorly-contrived attempt to tie up some of the loose ends of the series and give it a dramatic end... The final shot of a deserted lab is quite evocative." On One Law: "This is basically a very low key drama where Mike's powers (incidentally 'breaking out' has lost its novelty by now so it is never seen again) are abused by various people to help them pick locks, break into vaults, etc." On Mike: "Mike is an OK addition to the group, but lacks an interesting background." On Into the Unknown: "An extremely well-paced and gripping story, this is probably the best example of the series's serious stories." On The Dirtiest Business: "I challenge anyone who thinks The Tomorrow People is high-camp kiddies TV to retain that opinion after watching this 2-parter... This story begins with Stephen and Tyso having departed, leaving the very strong team of John, Elizabeth and Mike - easily the best combination of tomorrow people in the series' history." On A Much Needed Holiday: "Upon arriving for their holiday the TPs don the most bizarre costumes imaginable, but this is made up for (by) the interesting design of the Kleptons. The appearance of 'child miners' Trig and Trog indicates a drop in quality and increase in enjoyability as the series heads for its 'silly' period. On Heart of Sougguth: "Thankfully this is the only story to go into Mike's pop music background but having said that, the music is surprisingly moody and enjoyable." On The Lost Gods: "The series fully enters its camp and silly phase with the introduction of new Tomorrow Person, Hsui Tai, raised in a Tibetan monastery and led to believe she is The Goddess of Innocence... A slightly talky story which is not good news as Misako Koba playing Hsui Tai speaks very broken English and it's tricky to understand what she is saying." On Hitler's Last Secret (mislabelled as Hitler's Last Stand): "The story presents a clear anti-Nazi message but could be seen as a bit tasteless in the way it puts across the message." On The Thargon Menace: "In a painful effects sequence, a spaceship that is clearly a washing-up bottle painted orange, crashes into a jungle... The end result is an adventure where it is extremely hard to suspend your disbelief for even one second and the low budget and camp acting elevate these two episodes to a kind of trash trippy status... This is yet another'aliens' story and, being set in another country, shows the breadth of diversity the series was capable of, unlike its '90s successor." On Castle of Fear: "Elizabeth rejoins her team-mates from this story and it suddenly looks obvious that the tomorrow people are all getting on a bit... Amazingly there isn't really a plot to this two-part story and it's all remarkably low key." On Andrew: "It's obviously time for a fresh, young addition to the cast. Cue strange dreams for the TP, dreams of a headless highlander. It turns out to be caused by naughty scallywag Andre Forbes, using his new-found special powers to scare Angus McDuff, a worker at his father's hotel." On Achilles Heel: "Coincidentally the aliens land near Bruce Forbe's hotel on the very night Hsui Tai is singing for the guests (and her singing isn't bad - a lot better than her talking." On Living Skins: "...the TPs go out on a shopping expedition with Liz, John, Andrew and Hsui Tai coming across as very much Mum, Dad and the kids." On War of the Empires: "The series concludes with a return to the four episode format in a story brimming with ideas, ambition, and enthusiasm but lacking the resources to match." On the series in general: "From Jedekiah to Sorsons via breaking out, hyperspace and ancient Egypt, The Tomorrow People offered a scope for adventure that only Doctor Who could ever match, and an entertainment factor to leave all other SF programmes standing." ***** Shaun ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Ruby Red Subject: Re: TPDIS: Tp actor...
