From: "Lynne Stewart" Subject: (TrekChat) Date: Tue, 1 Aug 2000 07:24:13 -0400 Date: 01 Aug 2000 05:21:30 -0600 Recently I placed an order with a large mail order, online company. I was disappointed to get to the end of the order (for a pack of 6 cards) and find shipping to be $5.95! Since the customer wanted the cards bad, I placed the order and then found out they added another $1 for insurance (a $15 item) making my total now $7 to ship an item that weighs less then an ounce. I received the package and was annoyed to discover it did not come with the $1 insurance I had paid for! Attempts to email customer support have failed (it bounced). Here's my thing....this company has an exclusive card (not trek) that can be gotten nowhere else. A part of me feels the need to mention this cool card to collectors of that product line, another part of me doesn't want to give the company any business, any thoughts? The cards I ordered were packed with their catalog and put inside a large box filled with foam peanuts. This could have easily been sent, without the catalog, in a 5x7 padded envelope for alot less than the $7 they charged me. However, I wanted the cards badly enough (probably the same as you ordered Lynne - $15), that I paid the extra. It's like the ebay sellers that have a single card (value <$10) for auction and then say $5 shipping in the description. I try to avoid them, but when the cards are exclusive, what else can you do? Next, I would say I would sure not buy a case of such boxes without very strong assurance that I would be likely to get everything in the set and have good stuff left over to sell - in other words if Skybox expects us to lay out $1700 for a case and be likely to end up with the crap most people got with TNG Profiles, forget it. Also, if I were not guaranteed that this was the very last Skybox Trek release, forget it - it is time to find a new way to spend my money. > From: "Lynne Stewart" > Reply-To: TrekChat@lists.xmission.com > Date: Thu, 3 Aug 2000 12:48:03 -0600 > To: "Xmission. Their intent is to spend more money on the cards. Highlights- They feel they had two issues against them with TNG Profiles, too many short autos combined with bad collation. They are intending to see that none of these auto cards (list is not yet set) will be less then 300. They intend to offer many levels of chase cards, doing a parallel set-reflective, similar to mirrors, but more printing, so not that reflective, maybe more like the 7 of 9 card? There will be 5 Star Thread Cards, what that is is not set and could be main crew or guest stars. They are working on a McCoy tribute card set, which they intend to be a higher end technology. It isn't fully set in stone, but won't be a foil set, by any stretch. There will be lower end chase cards...foils, similar to what we have already seen, but they hope the higher end chases will be more unique then in the past. I have some serious worries. I don't' wanna break down a case and get what I got this time. I've heard some people did ok with break downs esp. of 20 box cases. I can't say that myself, my breakdown was ill, evil and sick on much of what I broke. I intend to be cautious while considering this set and asking lots of questions as it progresses to see what path they take. Sure, that is better than the TNG Profiles mess, but if there are very many that are only 300, the impact could be similar. If you have any impact on their thinking (assuming they are thinking), persuade them to have fewer autos rather than have very many that are as short as 300. I wonder how many pre-orders they will get? Seems like a lot of dealers are really angry at them over TNG Profiles. Combine that anger with higher prices and I would expect a lot of people to sit on the sidelines this time. > From: "Lynne Stewart" > Reply-To: TrekChat@lists.xmission.com > Date: Fri, 4 Aug 2000 09:13:12 -0600 > To: "Xmission. I'm almost certainly going to collect it. But unfortunately there won't be much enthusiasm because I'm sick of the total glut of sets which keeps coming at us. Most of them are clones as well - basic set, autographs of same people, they're even doing the star threads. My advice would be to not give anyone a licence for a while and let things settle down, but can you really see Viacom saying "let's forget our profits and put the fans first." I don't think so. Anyway, what I plan to do this time is something of an experiment. Usually I go rushing out and buy all the cards as if they're about to run out. Then a few months later I see the same cards selling for less than half of what I paid for them. So this time I'm going to leave it a few months as well. How much money will I save and how much more difficult will it be to get a full set? It should be interesting. I do think they would veto and attempts to do any sort of episode or profiles, but might consider themed series. It's also possible they will direct SkyBox not to do auto cards for awhile. They felt that at some point the auto cards would blow up and feel it has. Paramount thinks WE want a set that includes their auto cards, I told them we didn't/t. That perhaps a new collector might wander through and say..Hey, where's Kirk, but that the older collector was gonna say "Phew..at least I won't have to chase after my 5th Kirk" Paramount is under the impression that the upcoming movie set would allow for a nice batch of guest autos and supports that idea. > Anyway, what I plan to do this time is something of an experiment. > Usually I go rushing out and buy all the cards as if they're > about to run > out. Well I do have some sympathy with that because of any possible set, this would be the only one to interest me. BUT you've already told me that most of the interesting guest actors are dead. So goodness knows who they're going to fill it out with. And incidentally I hope they don't make anyone a short run. All of them are cheaper than what you paid 2 years ago. A quick look at Completed Auctions shows some selling at $7-10. With very few over $16. These are bargain basement prices people. And if i were a millionaire i'd be buying them "ALL" so that I could sell them to you 10 years from now at a decent profit. :) It's not a gamble. It's a proven fact. Iv seen people go bananas when a set first comes out. Spend 2-3 times as they normally would have to. It's like they think the first one is the only one that will ever be available. That's nuts! (The one online right now was the euro and after I asked about the view from the sides he changed the description, but no changes in price (heck that one guy got $800 on his euro leaf so who knows) Both implied that the set has been in the collection of the owner for it's whole life, or darn close to it... (this comment has also been deleted form this person's ad)..giving the old card dealer line "It was owned by a little ole lady in Pasadena and she only drive it to church on Sundays" sort of look. Even being told the set was NOT the real one, this does not seem to reflect in the ad, nor did the seller of the other respond. What's the deal folks? What is the goal of collecting, scalping our fellow man??/!!! Not really sure what it does, but I was terribly annoyed. First, this site had my email address now, without my permission, and wanted more of my personal information. I told the seller I would not enter the information and we would have to do business more directly. Was I wrong to be annoyed by this? Was it right for the seller to offer up my email address to a company I didn't trust? Perhaps it should be in the ebay listing..." I intend to use auctionne helper" That way I can refuse.... Anybody try to use that on my site, will get a wack upside the head....god forbid the seller and bidder should actually SPEAK to each other....there is already one big seller I resist buying from cause he pretty much says, send money, don't bother contacting me. But it's so damn convenient. I ended up signing up with Paypal this past week because of an auction myself. The situation was that the auction did say it accepted Visa, MC and all that with the little paypal thingie on the very bottom. I intended to use my Visa, basically because I haven't used it all year and it was a convenient option to use. But when I got my invoice from the seller it basically said if i want to pay by credit card I was to use paypal. Well then they shouldn't say they accept credit cards now should it? Because there not accepting credit cards. There using a service that uses credit cards. What good is this service you ask? Well for some it's been a nightmare. As I seen on MSNBC website this morning. What do i find but people that are being scamed by users of this type of service. The headlines read as follows: PayPal no friend to scam victims. Yahoo! users bilked of $10,000 by fake hard drive auctions, while third-party online payment firm offers no protection. http://www.msnbc.com/news/434192.asp?0nm=-2EI That's right. When it comes right down to it Paypal offers NO protection against users that abuse there service. Read the article. Its very enlightening. What it comes down to is these auction people are not listing there auctions properly. And something should be done about it. I too dislike the notion that all these supposed "Secure" Websites gathering all your personal information for the purpose of making a simple credit card payment is crazy. And mark my words. It's going to get worse. Worse in the sense that one day some hacker is going to break in to all these "secure" sites and take ALL of our money, ALL Your Personal info, AND YOUR LIFE! Imagine being an international user, seeing a seller takes credit card, bidding, or wanting to bid, only to discover that it's paypal, something they can't use. I use paypal alot, mostly cause I don't get hit with the fees I would get otherwise and it's nice to get items so quickly. but I have known all along they offer no protection, pitiful, the one thing that is SUPPOSED to be a plus about net commerce. If you use your credit card, then you are protected. How cool of them to take all the benefits and none of the risks..dang, I wish I could have a career like that..... BTW, I told the company of the invoicing thingie how annoyed I was that they were given my email address and they blew it off..everybody loves it, the seller has the right to do with your email address whatever he wants and if you don't want people to have access to you, get off the nets..interesting concept. Not only is it illogical to assume that people who like science fiction also like fake things, it is erroneous to say science fiction is fake. Well I let ya go on that one. Because there are many different categories of Sci Fi. However, really good SCI Fi, has at least a plausible background. I guess you are too young to remember that at the time of S. T. the O series aired automatically opening doors did not exist. I'll keep this to just that one simple example. Today's science fiction (good) is tomorrow's scientific fact. If you will notice my date you will see that I am a time traveler. :) I love science and science fiction, and I also love genuine items. Hey now Hey now. warping out, C.
