From: "W. David Samuelsen" Subject: (uad-announce) Kenneth C. Burdett full obituary Date: 01 Jul 2000 09:39:21 -0600 OGDEN/B -- Kenneth Charles Burdett, 90, passed away peacefully in his home on Thurs., June 29, 2000. Kenneth was born in Evanston, WY., on Oct. 20, 1909 to Charles Lyman and Sarah Thomas Burdett. He began attending the Utah School for the Deaf in Ogden at the age of five and continued throughout his years of education except for five years of college which he completed with honors at Gallaudet College in Washington D.C. He then returned to serve at the School for the Deaf for 40 years as student supervisor, coach, Boy Scout leader, instructor of printing, teacher of high school math and science, and for 11 years as Curriculum Coordinator before he retired in 1974. He also served lovingly and compassionately in many other capacities, both in church activities at the LDS Branch for the Deaf where he was a wonderful Priesthood example for deaf youth and in local state and national programs and organizations for the deaf. He received many honors through the years for his service and accomplishments and positive example to all. His gentle humor and great heart will always be cherished by his many former students, friends and family. Kenneth married Afton Curtis of Ogden on July 29, 1936. The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on September 5, 1941. She preceded him in death in August of 1960. From this union two children were born, JoAnn of Houston, Texas; and Ronald of Fremont, California. In 1965, he married Priscilla Rogerson and acquired three stepsons, Terry, Richard and Chuck Rogerson. Also surviving is one sister, Esther McCammon of Incline Village, NV; five grandchildren and one great-grand-daughter. Funeral services will be Mon., July 3, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Larkin & Sons Mortuary, 496 24th St., Ogden. Friends may call at the mortuary, Sun., from 6-8 p.m. and Mon., from 10-10:45 a.m. Interment, Ogden City Cemetery. The family wishes to thank Home Care and Hospice for their love and support. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite charity in Kenneth's name. Note: Per phone call with the family before the first announcement, Memorial contributions to the Ned C. Wheeler Scholarship Fund are encouraged in memory of Kenneth C. Burdett. W. The group of twenty students represents both strong oral and strong signing backgrounds. Tenth grade is the point at which the students merge for the first time. Any teacher stepping into this position would also need to acommodate the strengths and skills of the students representing the two philosophies. There are commonly students from both communication backgrounds in a single class requiring the teacher or an interpreter to interpret for students. As expected with any group of this size, abilities range greatly from near grade level to greatly delayed students. Classes are designed to facilitate the greatest growth for each individual. Student needs are addressed in a variety of ways through mainstreaming, vocational programs, on-the-job training, small group settings and individualized instruction. We are housed in a public high school that has hosted our classes for many years. The faculty and staff consider both the students and the USDB personnel a part of the school. This is a great opportunity for anyone wishing to expand their knowledge and experience.
